Are you currently in college? Or you finished? If so, medical?

Posted by UWM on Feb-03-2005 16:53:

I'm finishing with degrees in molecular biology and biochemistry in May.

I agree, in addition I shouldn't have been so general with my statements.

Cool beans. I hope a pick a fuckin' major soon. I'm so lost. Tryin' to get this AA and I have no clue what i will major in. I can't do anything too complicated. Biochemistry or biology, pretty much the whole science/medical field is not for me. I'm an idiot. I have interest in journalism and business. But I don't know what's gonna happen.

i would say you are pwned because there's a world of difference between 'there is more to baldness than genes' and its a "blatant myth". The leading cause is genetics and to deny that would be folly.

Posted by UWM on Feb-03-2005 17:17:

The 'blatant myth' I was referring to is quoted below:

"The gene for baldness is passed down thru your mother. If your mothers father was bald, it is likely that you will be bald."

For one, there isn't a 'baldness gene.' There are a wide variety of genetic influences on hair loss, most having to do with the production levels of particular hormones.
Secondly, there has been a lot of research done to test the validity of the claim that, if your mother's father is bald, you will be bald. This research has proven that to be folly.

Shit, if that followed suit I wouldn't be losing my hair, as my mother's father had a full head of hair.

Posted by Ygrene on Feb-03-2005 17:24:

I think this whole thread is folly-cle.

http://www.hairlosstalk.com/newsletter/article243.htm

"Its an enduring and common misconception among patients that MPB is inherited from the mothers side. Well, that statement is neither right nor wrong. Pattern baldness can be inherited from the mothers side. But it can also be inherited from the fathers side."

Posted by UWM on Feb-03-2005 17:41:

Okay, so it's not a blatant myth, but it's not the die-hard inheritance pattern.

You're really hell bent on proving me wrong. Are you bored or something?

i'm the resident expert but i'll admit i didn't know that the mother side genetics was over hyped. I find both science and the field of genetics interesting. besides i'm in a race against baldness
