This is kinda related to my main point.

Vangelis, the writer of the bladerunner soundtrack used synths to create his sounds. The fact that he used synths does not detract from the beauty and skill of the music. Jean Michel Jarre is another example.

The people I have argued with have told me that synthesis is only a recorded sound made to sound different and I have tried to explain otherwise to my dismay (I know how an oscillator works and how it can produce many tones and timbres). I know that Vangelis and Jean Michel can't be described as "Dance Music", but IMO they were pioneers to a new sound (SYNTHESIS). That sound has been manipulated beyond expectation but it has opened a gateway to possibilities.

Usage of this includes Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Pink Floyd but the technology they had thirth years ago has now been harnessed and incorporated into most forms of popular music not to mention rock.

EDM was born of synthesis and computer usage yes, but does anyone think that some music should be disregarded because of its usage of synthesis as opposed to acoustic means. I dont think Vangelis or Jean Michel did. Neither do I for that matter and furthermore what I choose to do with my oscillators and effects should not make me any different from a guy plucking a guitar as I am creating an original sound and manipulating it as I see fit, i'm not limited to one sound, I have many sounds at my disposal.

Should the use of such instruments and sounds in the way they are used to make trance, techno or any other form of EDM be forever condemned to a life underground because we are a minority in both music and culture. See my point, we are better than they think we are in both respects. It's not about who is better, only that we are equal.

P.S, apologies once again but I know i'm not alone here. This is an expansion on my original point and I want to hear similair experience of narrow mindedness even if it is me, blow away folks.

Thank you

Sorry folks, but i'm determined to keep this thread alive even if it means my destruction.

If my destruction means preaching my beliefs all the better, but you gotta back me up here.

Who on this forum agrees with me?

You must agree with my original post or your opinion is that Trance, Techno and EDM in general whatever your preferred genre outside of EDM is, dosen't deserve the respect that rock and other forms of popular music has been given. I only want to show some people I know, that other people besides me see that music goes beyond acoustic because apparently that's all they know. I know i'm not alone, so prove me right. I know my love of music is not transparent and i'm not going to wave this webpage in my mates face's and say their beliefs are bad mmmmkay. I only want equality. Don't you?

there is quite a lot of acoustic edm... a lot of rock is semi electric

your point caller?

I have argued this point with some people, where I have called into question the use of electric guitar.

This does not dissuade the argument I am calling into question as an electric guitar is merely an expansion of an acoustic guitar and uses electricity to acheieve a different sound where elctricity is used to enhance and manipulate the sound of the string. This is accepted in popular music culture. The electric guitar is used everday along with the acoustic guitar. Nothing wrong with that.

So I still argue that a synthesizer is an instrument in its own right that can be used to create acoustic sounds BUT, HUGE BUT not only recreates acoustic sounds (and should not be used for creation of acoustic sounds IMO) but produces many more sounds, in fact an INFINITE amount of sounds which cannot be created by acoustic means which in fact only serves to enforce my point that synthesis regardless of genre should be regarded as a completeley new method of sound creation, I repeat SOUND CREATION. Is Sound creation and manipulation now disregarded because there are general rules for crerating music???????????

For me this is unacceptable, this is what I mean, help me out.

If you disagree, I will not diss or flame you in anyway, I only want views. Thank you in advance.

Been sitting here for almost 5 hours. Nobody seems to agree with me that our music deserves the same respect as other socially or commercially whatever forms of music. Why is that.

I cant wait to wake up and read views on this subject if any, telling me right on bruvva. Although a nice shut up will also be greeted with open arms.

I think all of your points are valid. Over the years I've been having the same arguments about music you have with a lot of my friends. The fact is I've just given up on many of them, because no matter how logical and valid my arguments are, a lot of them just ignore it and go; "no, it's not music". Some of my friends are, as you probably understand, ignorant and narrowminded.

I've tried braking it down to a question of definition; is good music music that takes physical skill to make? If it is I can agree that the software-produced music (like a lot of EDM) don't really shine. Is good or bad music based on wether or not it can be created live? As in playing an instrument and making music "on the go"? Of course, some EDM can be partly created live, with drums, syntheseisers, an fx-box etc. (I don't know the name of the instruments being used), but not to the same extent as a rock band (then again; what about DJ'ing?). If the answer to these questions is yes then there's not much more to argue about. It's their bloody loss they can't appreciate anything but their narrowminded definition of music.

I say fuck it.

Thanks Redd, this is exactly the input i'm after.

May I produce your offspring?

In all seriousness, I invite this type of contribution. Maybe it is I who require justification. But I feel justified.

In fact I will name my next track, Redd (Justified remix) in honour of this statement.

Peace out.

What are you making such a big deal out of electronic music for?

It all sounds the same.

Beep boop, tsk tsk tsk, ch, beep boop, tsk tsk tsk, ch.

Posted by Redd on Feb-11-2005 04:38:

Trust me, I know how you feel. And this is one of the reasons I like this forum; I don't feel alone in the world with my ideas of music.

- I wrote a really long continuation (word?) of the rant here about narrowmindedness (word?) and ignorance, but I don't think it was anything really new so I cut it

And watch it, your boy might be reading this!

Does it indeed. So do you think that all rock music sounds the same, twang twang?

Thats a point I could do without, why would you entertain EDM if it all sounds the same to you?

Posted by locutox on Feb-11-2005 04:58:

I think someone who listens to emo whinge****** music like Good Charlotte is a loser. In return a lot of people who listen to Good Charlotte think that dance music is repetitive, emotionless fake crap that only poppers listen to.

People think that the music they listen to is the best and try to 'educate' people, but in reality you make yourself look like a arrogant jerk by saying that your taste is better. Just share your music around and if they dont like it, who cares.

Everything is equal (and as is music) so just accept it. If you call someone narrow minded or arrogant because they dont like the same music as you, go get fucked. EDM fans are just as elitist as any others. I think you need to relax and let people listen to what they want.

If someone says shit about trance, tell them to fuck off. Simple as that.

Posted by Kev K on Feb-11-2005 05:04:

I always let people listen to my music, if they dont like it, so be it. I do not try to educate them. They like what they like and sometimes I agree with them, although I observe a lack of respect. I say fuck them if they cant respect. This is not, I EMPHASISE NOT MY POINT HERE.

I want to hear similair experience. I am not preaching. WHY WOULD I PREACH EDM TO AN EDM ORIENTED WEBSITE.

Im going to bed now, but i'll check this thread the morn, I hope to read other peoples experiences, not opinions as I feel I do not express an opinion here, except to the end of respect for EDM.

Night Night and sweet trance dreams

Narrow minded?

Anyway I can usually pick out people who would appreciate trance music more then others. Giving trance cds to someone like my brother who listens to Slipknot, Metallica, Coal Chamber, would be a waste of time but I dont think that he is narrow minded because of this.

This was kinda what my deleted text was about; I'm not saying people are narrowminded and ignorant for not liking EDM or whatever, it's their whole attitude against it. I don't like jazz, but I accept and respect it as music that many enjoy and love. I don't go "OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS IS UTTER SHIT, YU CANT CALL THIS MUSIC, TURN IT OFF OR ILL KICK SOMEONES HEAD IN!" if I hear it. This is the attitude I'm getting from a lot of people when talking about EDM. Is it so hard to accept this kind of music? What are the rockers afraid of, some "techno"-monster coming to get them? Is there something wrong with their brains? WHAT?

But again, fuck it.

Okay, you think it would be a waste of time, but why is it a waste of time?

Is it because your brother wouldnt listen to or appreciate the cd's you have bothered to give him???????????????

Why would it be a waste of time, why wouldnt he listen to them, or would he listen to them and tell you what he thought of them, have you tried, has he listened, what does he think, thats what I want to know.....

Give me experience not supposition.

Hahah yeah that's what i'm feeling right now about this topic.. it just keeps going around in circles.

Kev: If i'm listening to it loud and he's around he'll say something like 'turn that crap off' 'how can you listen to that?? it's all fake' I say the same back.
