Charlie May:
One of the pioneers of the UK Progressive House/Trance scene in the early 90's as Spooky and to me. It's also forgotten by many that he has played a big part in the production of many of Sasha's productions including "Xpander" which bares an uncanny resembelance to Spooky - Little Bullet (Live Version) which for me is the real classic, and not Xpander.

Caspar Pound:
Another pioneer in the early 90's scene who tragically died in April 2004 of brain cancer. He produced in many, many different styles and his work on Metal Master - Spectrum and Union Jack - Two Full Moons & A Trout are timeless classics.

Andy Cato:
Nobody can make piano sound better in electronic music as his work as Big C, Qattara and Mothers Pride demonstrates. Has also produced under several different aliases including Weekend Players and Groove Armada with completely different styles.

Liam Howlett (the man behind "The Prodigy")

Some sort of electronic Beatle, he managed to be original and popular at the same time. He was essential to the development of Hardcore and its spawned genres (d'n'b and hhc), he was the first artist to hit the top of billboard without being formulaic and he's now looking for other paths to extend his sound to.

Pizzicato Five

They sure deserve a nomination. First because of their creativity: from acid bossa to hip hop, they've done loads of stuff. Besides, they're so wacky it's funny. The way music should be

MFS as a label

Cosmic Baby
Paul Van Dyk
Charlie May
Pete Namlook
Laurent Vronnez
Dj Tiesto
John Digweed

imo they all created a sound, that the rest of the EDM artists attempted to mimic...

My list:

Charlie May
Laurent Vronnez
Dj Tiesto
John Digweed
M.I.K.E.
Paul Oakenfold

Posted by Atari Addict on Feb-16-2005 16:36:

depends on the type of music i guess, but in consideration only of my current favorites i'd have to say sander kleinenberg, James Zabiela, or James Holden

Posted by trance-ecj on Feb-16-2005 17:32:

Oliver Lieb

Orbital

Transa (these guys made everything sound good)

Posted by {b.s.e.} on Feb-16-2005 17:34:

ahaha, n00bs. Aaron Funk, also known as Venetian Snares blows every one of these producers out of the water. Listen to his album Rossz Csillag Allat Szletett and then think about your vote for Digweed.

Ok I want to add to my initial nominations for this thread. I started with these:

Leftfield
Massive Attack
Quivver

But there are so many artists I would regard as artists who have made a big impact on me and my reasons for enjoying the type of genres of music we talk about in EDM.

Portishead (Probably my favourite music artists in all genres):
For some Portishead are difficult to like, their music creates a real melancholic feel with the extremely drepressive vocals of Beth Gibbons. Everyone who knows Portishead well knows the classic songs on their two albums, which I completely love. But in addition to that, that have contributed with some great remixes too. But what stands out among others was their attempt at the short film 'to kill a dead man' and the resulting soundtrack to that was a sublime masterpiece of Electronic Music.

Angeles (Martin Cartledge & Jay Welsh):
Two artists that, since 1996, have been producing the kind of trance in which this forum was founded. So many of their songs remain among the best trance songs from one of the best era's of trance music. Under the Angeles (Hit Zero) name came most of their releases, but also people will remember the songs they released as Sunset Sky (A New World), Sneaker (Scatterbomb) and also their solo efforts post millenium.

Jam & Spoon:
A number of timeless classics like Odyssey to Anyoonya, Stella, Angel. I don't know enough about them to do them justice, but they definately deserve a mention when talking about real pioneers of the trance world.

No limit to how many nominations you can make. If you have data to back it up, this is especially true. As I said in the OP, simple lists of artists may not have as much sway as well defined nominations.

Posted by noikeee on Feb-16-2005 17:46:

to be honest, i don't really have much of a clue. it's when making these kinds of lists that i realize it, when most of the names that i can remember are very recent or never had really that big of an impact on the scene. but what the hell, here's my +1 to these very popular guys over here:

charlie may
olivier lieb
m.i.k.e.

*edit* removing james holden

Leftfield

They set the bar for forward thinking music in 1995 with the great classic called Leftism. Most people at that time could not understand how far ahead Leftfield were in their thinking BUT that album just pushed progressive house. They set the bar even higher 4 years later with Rhythm and Stealth, which encompassed dub techno, techno, electronic and some genres that don't have names. They always did not come up with something that had been heard before, they locked themselves in their studio and came out months later with cutting edge. Like 6.8 war, who thought of using those notes vs. each other. They split before album 3 but their two album history is legendary because both defined an era and how far they were ahead of others. They should be there more than orbital, chems, the orb, fsol and others because the others just made weird shit at times, leftfield's stuff made the world take notice and go shit this is completely mind blowing. Who else has one of their albums mentioned in just about every single journalist top 5 albums of all time poll.

Kraftwerk

Simply put, without them, Music would not be the same. They came out in the late 60's and early 70's with beepy electronic sounds that were very different from the harsh rock of that day. They were the catalyst for disco, house, techno and trance and many artists would not be making the music we love if they did not have such an influence, so put them in the running. Most don't know much about their releases but everyone knows

Brian Eno

What can be said about the dirty playing card collector or mr.professor as he likes to be called. He is known as a u2 collaborator to some but most don't realize that he came up with Ambient that explored vastly different terrain. The man also has helped produce a ton of music by a ton of different artists.

Jean Michel Jarre

To end my nominations for greatest EDM artist of all time, Jean Michel Jarre or son and lumiere homme as they call him or simply the legend to the french. He pushed an electronic sound in the mid 70's, 80's and even 90's and his sound was still evolving and he deserves much props for this because he simply refused to give up, he made stuff that sounded like no one else and his contribution to the EDM scene will never fully be realized. His shows with his music and light shows that he threw on Bastille Day in France drew 1-2 million people, (highest ever attendance was 2.2 million for one of his shows, beat that LP!). He combined that rare vision with that incredibly tough work ethic and he has given so much to EDM

i'll +1 these

Marco V has released a lot of great tracks including Godd, Recovered, Automanual. Definately i poineer and a great influence on the EDM world.

Nu-Nrg is like THE uplifting, high energy trance producers for people who love uplifing, high energy trance. Production after production is released, and each one is amazing in its own right. Anyone who's enjoyed their Orgasmatron sets knows exactly what im talking about.

Leftfield

Pioneers of progressive house, what more can I say.

Orbital

Truly diverse and original. Sometimes weird, but I can't say any of their productions are bad.

Sasha

He's been here for a long time, and while it hasn't always been groundbreaking, it's always been quality.

Oliver Lieb

Um. Yeah?

That's all for now. And nope, no Digweed. He was there with Sasha, but he hasn't done much production-wise.

Yeah. You can say you love NU-NRG productions all you want, but it won't change the fact that all their shit sounds the same. This isn't just another "favorite producers" thread.

Leftfield (2 albums, 7 singles)

The Future Sound of London (6 albums, 6 singles)
