Why do you have a whole week? We only get 1 day.

nah only three days. But I prefer to be wandering the uni instead of actually starting my degree....

ever since i got back from nz, ive been waiting for uni to start. i get back and all is good bar the elective i chose. i was hoping to cover heart and lung disease, but all we get to do is std's, and thats just a waste of time, but its good to be back

being bored at uni is infinitely better than being bored at work. make the most out of it. fvck it, do post grad. get lecturing. get tenure. that way you never have to get a real job, you get months of holiday a year, and youre surrounded by first year honeys for the rest of your life

fuck i hate working

if only it were so easy. tenure at a decent school is very, very difficult to get, and it usually means 10+ years of getting paid peanuts and working your arse off, publishing, teaching, publishing, marking, publishing, filling out research grant applications, publishing, etc.

4 out of 5 recent phd grads in this country are working in areas that have nothing to do with their area of expertise, just to pay the bills. the australian higher education system is headed for serious trouble based on the lack of funding availale to hire decent academics.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Mar-03-2005 23:48:

HEHE, i didnt mean to imply it was easy

however ive never believed research & publishing (at least within the confines of my chosen disciplines) was particularly difficult. not when compared to, say, the 9-5 office grind. sitting down and doing that kind of work, on your own schedule, is infinitely better than most other situations, imo.

sadly, my hons year didnt go well enough for me to get postgrad scholarships. and now, here i am. grinding away. fuck.

Posted by Nyquist_Theorem on Mar-03-2005 23:56:

oh for sure - the lifestyle's good... its just that without tenure the stability is sooo lacking. ive had a few mates get booted/squeezed out not because of their professional capacity but because they rubbed the wrong person the wrong way, and its quite discouraging.

but esp when you factor in the other perks of the job, yeah being an academic is fairly appealing compared to working one's arse off in the private sector. if its not just about money and instead about the whole package - lifestyle, recognition, intellectual stimulation, intellectual freedom, etc, then yeah, definitely a good direction to go in. you could still do a masters by research or a phd part time while working if you're keen.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Mar-04-2005 04:00:

hehe, true. but all jobs have perks. net access doesnt make me hate working any less

Yes, some of 1st years are rather good looking this year, pity they are all six years younger than me

*where has my youth gone*?

Posted by -=M=- on Mar-05-2005 03:19:

vi you can pull off the "experienced" look hehehe :P

Posted by Bitz on Mar-06-2005 07:45:

general question to all:

are the first year's at your uni as keen as they are at melbourne?

i'm doing first year biology and every single lecture it's packed with first years carrying all their text and workbooks. just watching them write every single word in a flurry down amazes me...well that and like M said, way too much make up for 8 am on friday mornings.

Posted by vitamin v on Mar-07-2005 01:18:

OMG. I think my uni has no heating today. When you breathe in class your breath comes out as a cloud mist its f***cking freezing!!

Posted by TCB on Mar-08-2005 12:45:

yeah im pretty sure the 1'st year students are just as keen here in adelaide. doing a first year subject as well this semester and i must agree with gumble on the influx of fresh skirt. god damn.
