w00t LIVERPOOOOL!!!!!
haha can't believe we got through leverkusen...granted they had 5 regulars out of their side...but beating them 3-1 at their stadium is a notable achivement.

Whens the draw for the quarters???

I'm not a big chelsea fan but they really did play well against Barca...though Mourinho is a fucking prick.

Posted by TheVrk on Mar-10-2005 16:13:

Great idea making a TOTA thread for this....

Milan AC fan here - LOVIN the fact we knocked out ManU
Chelsea - Barca was one of the BEST halves (1st)of football
I've EVER seen
UNBELIEVABLE.....

But glad to see Chelsea win - yes, i do have their jersey
The draw for the quarters will be VERY interesting...

I highly doubt Real Madrid vs Juve would be more boring than last night's game!

I was always a great fan of AC Milan, since I was a little kid I just love the way they play with each other and in my previous post I stated why. Simply because IMO they are 1 of the best teams when it comes to ball possession. Other than that, my fav defender & midfielder plays there, Paulo Maldini & Clearance Seedorf
BTW anybody seen the Juve vs Real match? It started to get brutal towards the end. I think that match was all about commercialism, Real didn't even put a fight until Solari came on I'm glad Juve is through.

Posted by starsearcher on Mar-10-2005 16:40:

I couldn't believe Michael Owen...their literally top scorer right now came on in extra time almost... that game was pretty shitty...it seems like Real's instructions were to hold the ball in the middle and just go through with a 0-0 or something...nobody was attacking

well, yea, they've got stars on the team, but compared to the stars of one Real Madrid for example, these guys are nowhere near close and Mourinho has proven that big names don't mean titles and championships

Posted by TheVrk on Mar-10-2005 16:50:

Really, Real played NOT TO LOSE instead of trying to win -
which USUALLY backfires....
Owen not starting is understandable, but substituting
Zidane - STILL the best MF imo - THAT early?!?!?!
THAT was a mistake.... he didnt play roughly the
last 40 mins of match action!!!! CRUCIAL mistake.
But i'm glad he (luxemburgo) made it - i hate Real

Posted by loca on Mar-10-2005 19:25:

Bwahahaha Madrid got their asses kicked out Shows that no matter how many "superstars" you get on your team you CAN still lose! Good. I hope they cry.

Go Liverpool! (for now)

Posted by Yohan on Mar-10-2005 19:39:

This is my prediction at the beginning of this round.

Bayern Munich v Arsenal
-Arse is showing lots of kinks in its armour, only drawing against Sheffield Utd on Sat. (though the reserve team was played) And also out of contention for the title in Premiership. Bayern Munich is at top of the table in Bundesliga right now, but tied with Schalke04. However, they are coming off a crushing 5-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund and Dutch striker Makaay is on fire, posing problem for Arse who might not have defender Sol Campbell back in time.
Bayern wins 2-1 (3-2 on aggregate)

Liverpool v Bayer Leverkusen
Leverkusen is still in the hunt for Bundesliga title being 6 pts off the top. Liverpool suffers from many injuries and having trouble finding form. But when their players start to get back, Liverpool may be pushing for the CL title.
1-1 draw (aggregate 2-3)

PSV v Monaco
Possibly one of the more entertaining matchups this round.
Monaco is stil playing well, after surviving the group stage. The duo of Chevanton and Saviola provides serious firepower not to be overlooked easily. PSV is in good form, being top of Eresdivisie right now. They do not have star players, but their group works hard, led by Von Bommel the captain and striker Vennegoor of Hesselink. Monaco's luck may just run out this time.
PSV wins 2-1 (4-2 aggregate)

Real Madrid v Juventus
Real is still having trouble from time to time, with gap in defence that will not be filled, now that Woodgate is out for the season. Juve has one of the stingiest defence that is hard to break down. It is hard to call this one.
Juve wins 1-0 (2-1 aggregate)

Barcelona v Chelsea
Barca is in flying form, but so is Chelsea. Although Chelsea lost to Newcastle in FA cup tie, it should not effect them much as their team seems unstoppable in Premiership. But the flowing attack of Barca should prove challenging to Chelsea.
Chelsea 2-2 Barca (Chelsea wins 3-2 aggregate)

FC Porto v Inter Milan
Inter is still unbeaten in Serie A but mostly draws games. Porto plays annoying game. Inter is full of quality players that should be able to destroy Porto.
Inter 2-0 Porto (Inter wins 3-1 aggregate)

Man Utd v AC Milan
Another good match to watch as ManU and AC Milan are both in fine form.
ManU 1-1 AC Milan (AC Milan wins 3-2 aggregate)

Werder Bremen v Lyon
Should be an interesting game with high score, if their group phase games are any indication.
2-2 draw (Lyon wins 4-3 aggregate)

***

6 out of 7 correct guesses, I do say not too bad.

Now, goooo Inter! Destroy those diving Portuguese wankers. (Why is this match not played until 15th?)

Actually, quick question. When watching the match last night the bf and i were stumped. What the hell does aggregate mean? And why is it that when Juve had already beaten Madrid they went into OT?

I'm confused

they play 2 games...2 legs if you will...and the total score of the two games is what counts. So Real beat them 1-0 the first game...so that meant that Juve had to beat Real by 2 goals to go through...when they just scored 1 on aggregate they were tied 1-1 so as a result they went to overtime where Juve made it 2-1 on aggregate........same with all the other teams...aggregate of the two games.

Also, away goals count double in case of a tie, so for example if team A and team B were tied 2-2 after two legs, but team B had an away goal, then they would advance.

Very important, this away goal thing.

Oh and I forgot that Inter and AC Milan play at same pitch. How silly of me.

Ibrahimovich is awesome dribbler, but he needs to learn how to shoot.

Kaka needs to play on a team with more open play (Chelsea anyone?) and he'll truly shine. The cramped style of AC Milan will get them wins, but not the style Kaka is best at.

HappyHappy

Woohoo, I see that people are already bashing Real, along with me

Posted by Kytracid on Mar-10-2005 23:07:

Real aren't the same team they were a few years back. Their exit at the hands of Juve has proven that the aging galatico's are in serious need of new blood. Zizu isn't the same player he was when they were champions, Raul is going through one the worst goal droughts in his career, Figo seems to have lost his pace which combined with his flair and crossing made him so lethal. Plus, they have no anchor man to replace Makelele -- and no, Gravesan doesn't count !

Real need to dump some of their big name defenders and bring some quality midfielders and defenders. Looks like Carlos will be the first casulty of the summer -- his glaring errors in straying too far up field have resulted in quite a few losses for Real this season. In my opinion, this might very well be the last season for him in the madrid colors.

From the looks of it, Chelsea are going to be very tough to beat. They have all the nessasary personal to accomplish the double. A team built around pacy midfielders, strong defenders, and technically skilled forwards has added a real grit to an already capable side. I guess the only thing that might hurt Chelsea is the lack of pedigree when it comes to the final game...lack of experience though isn't nessasarily a bad thing. Just ask Porto and Greece.

Still, i think it's Chelsea's championship to lose. Once Drogba and Robben are back that team is only going to get stronger. AC and Juve are technically strong, but i hate their defensive style of play and hope they get crushed by the blue's.

Lyons looking pretty good too, but we'll see how they do against some real opponents in the next round. Liverpool is another team that i don't expect to progress further then the quarter finals...they lack the quality to beat teams like Juve, Milan and Chelsea.

^^^

Hopefully now that your boy has scored a few goals he'll finally begin to show the promise that led to his transfer to Chelsea...for all his talent, he's looked the most out of place player in the Chelsea squad...

Still, i hope they retain his services..him and Robben were a fierce strike partership at PSV a few seasons ago so there's no reason he can't become successfull for the blues. I hear though that Chelsea want to get Adriano from Inter ...and you know if that happens one of the current strikers will have to move on and unfortunately that'll probably end up being Kezman.

When Drogba and Robben return, its true, they will be EXTREMELY
tough to beat.... But hating on Milan's style doesnt change
the fact that they are prolly STILL the TOUGHEST team to beat.
DONT FORGET: Shevchenko is also returning
I just hope they dont match up with Chelsea next round - too good
of teams to play this early...

Lyon WILL upset someone i think - as a Milan fan i REALLY
hope they dont play each other in the quarters....

WILL be interesting
