Was that information for someone that is upgrading from a 512 connection though?

I'll kick him in the balls anyway

*edit* because we're on 512 so they gave us an option of upgradeing to 1meg ulimited or 2meg with a 15GB cap

5gb, lol, 10 hours constant dl and you'd be fucked

Posted by Jim on Mar-12-2005 00:33:

Yeah I know. Seeing as we're almost always streaming online radio its not a very clever idea to go for a service that has a cap.

Sorry if you saw hugely sized letters by the way, still trying to get used to the size command on vbulletin, i'm too used to invision lol

tbh id rather have unlimited downloads at 750k then some download cap at 2mb when im at home ..

So is there a limit on NTL with the upgrades??

seems so im afraid .. im more hesitant these days then to jump on a supposed offer as this one ..

the user policy reads:
quote:
"Normal use" of the service is defined as up to 1 gigabyte downstream of data transfer daily (which equates to approximately 200 music tracks, 650 short videos, 10,000 pictures or around 100 large software programmes downloaded per day).

I cant help but feel that this free upgrade is being financed by a surrender on the part of the customer of an unlimited service to a cap enforced line .. not good

the score is ntl will "moniter" this limit atm and only inforce it later on down the line when the select few who leavve their conection on 24/7 downloading affect the local service for others, people who have 1 or 2 days heavy downloading a month have nowt to worry about (I spent a fair few hours reading threads on http://www.cableforum.co.uk/?
a good source for info on UK cable BB + tv)

1 or 2 days heavy downloading? what about the rest of the month then? just web browsing and such?

Posted by chojin on Mar-14-2005 10:35:

i just wish they could improve the upload a bit more. it's all well and good having a massive download speed, but most bittorent sites i use require a ratio...and it still takes ages to upload at 25kbps.

Posted by Streakfury on Mar-14-2005 13:38:

OK then well I'll stay well clear of the "upgrades". What's wrong with this country anyway, are we still living in the dark ages or something?? Most of Europe have got faster internet speeds than us. It seems like we're behind when it comes to the internet, which I dont understand because I'm sure we use the net as much as any other country. These ISP's want to get their act together.

Posted by Az on Mar-14-2005 16:27:

ntl are automatically upgrading everybody
mine was done yesterday
does anyone know how to check how much bandwidth you've used in one day?

Posted by jon on Mar-14-2005 19:08:

goto www.download.com and search for a bandwith moniter, plenty around and most are freeware

Posted by Cru54d3r on Mar-14-2005 20:01:

I use DU-meter .. nice small prog ..

Posted by dex316 on Mar-14-2005 23:25:

upgrading ur speed on ntl doesnt sign u back up for a minimum contract does it?

also is there a specific d/l limit only i havent turned my computer off for weeks and will this limit be enforced before june?

Posted by Coup on Mar-15-2005 21:56:

it took some doing but i eventually managed to extract my username and password for my broadband that i was given back in July 2001 when i originally took it out, but got there in the end. fucking indian call centres.

anyway, 2mbit, woot. Personally the download cap doesnt effect me, i dont download alot, so would rather have increased brousing speed.

Plus the upload has gone from 15kb/sec (750k cable) to 25kb/sec (2mbit).

NTL told me on the phone that all customers will automatically be increased so those in doubt if they want to do it or not have no choice, but how long it is until your done is anyones guess.

surely they cant do that without our permission. fair enuff upgrading the speeds but they cant impose download restrictions which we originally didnt sign up for.

Posted by Coup on Mar-16-2005 00:56:

as said, i think you'll have to go some to get called up for overuseage. and even if you are, just say "hey, when i signed i signed for unlimited use, whats going on".

Posted by Cru54d3r on Mar-16-2005 02:07:

In which case ill happily wait until they do the upgrade just incase pressing the button to upgrade myself means that i accept the new user policy with the 1gb quotas enforced ..

Posted by Streakfury on Mar-16-2005 15:45:

Yeah I heard that NTL are going to be upgrading everyone automatically anyway, but apparently some people will need a new modem, and NTL cant provide them all just yet. I presume that when they can, that's when the upgrade will happen for everybody, and that's also when the limit will be imposed.

So how long do we have with an uncapped line, that's the question.
