My cousin is a huge rock person, completely into it and I'm really the one around who listens to trance/(real) house etc etc. So one day I played it in my car, to be specific, Tiesto!

He actually admitted that he likes it, BUT only tracks without vocals, he thinks the vocals ruin it all. But that's still a huge step for someone like him who would never listen to it.

So now the next thing I'm trying to do is bring him to a club in Toronto with only that music playing. He'll look so out of place but no one really cares at clubs/events like these. Everyone's cool.

But to answer your question, I guess just play it for them, if they like it, great! If not, whatever. All I say is to not hate on it, and I'm dead serious when I say it to people, "because it's just as hard as making a rock song". I hate people who say one genre is shit.

Funny you should mention Metal/Rock. Most of the producers I know and a lot of the DJs who play trance have all been into metal and played in bands... some even in the same bands as me.
Musically they are not as different as you might think.

To the original poster.
There isn't really a lot you can do about this. Just be professional and play to the crowd.
The other thing is that there will come a time in the evening when you may be able to drop a trance track or two towards the end. But essentially it sounds like you are playing the wrong venue.
Be a pro and entertain people first off and secondly try and get a gig in a place that suits your tastes more.

Cheers

And i dont mind i can listen to any genre of music realy but its anoying how ignorent some people are

Yeah... I have this too.. I try to force my firends into trance... They like EDM but cheesy one... *we have this in our country* this genre is call ASIAN UNDERGROUND! Asian POP remix into Trance.. CLUB TRANCE i might say...

Most of my friends are E/XTC lover... they just love ASIAN UNDERGROUND! But when it comes to Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto, AVB stuffs.. they dont like it... AT ALL!!

So one day, we are having a house party... most r on E... so on the middle of the journey, i play some Uplifting Trance...like Alphazone stuff... they love it! When It comes to Prog, they say it is too slow but high! comes to vocal... they love it too.. they say sound pop.. they can sing along...

So after the effect of the E is gone/ the next morning... they told me Trance is nice.. but on MDMA/E/XTC... When they are sober.. they dont find it interesting *What can i say?*

Cheers!!

PS
That's a joke in case anyone sees this and gets the wrong idea. Ok, so guns don't kill people, people kill people I hear you say. I beg to differ, the gun pretty obviously helps...!

I spoke to my hip-hop/alternative mates and they said that trance music is for clubs only. I think that is shocking. They said they would prob listen to it under the influence or drunk. any other time they wouldnt listen to it.

aw well. who cares. each to there own at the end of the day. i dont care if they dont like my choice of music. I dont choose it for them I choose it for me..

Also too many people sterotype trance as cheesy pop sh*t. they think ahh trance aka pop dance.. Thats one of the problems.

hahahah that is so funny. I heard that shit ages ago. A mate gave me a cd with this 'club trance' and it's like speedy cheesy trance with a few asian lyrics thrown in, and at the break you hear something like FUUUUUCK YOUUUUUR MAMAAAA in cantonese to bring up the atmosphere. Very fucked up and definately not my cup of tea!

Posted by mndeg on Mar-17-2005 03:39:

yeah, bad taste :\

Posted by Liquid Fusion on Mar-17-2005 12:51:

you can always make the rap remixes with trance in them...but like stick on the baddest stuff you know..i mean no ones gonna listen to shit they dont like so you gotta deal with that....if your playin at a club and they tell you to switch..get your shit and leave cause man your at the wrong club and you should be at the one down the street thats playin all the good shit....do you mix more than just trance...house is good and a variety of things might help?

I feel your pain.
Nothing sucks more than having someone ask for a completely different music than what you are playing.
While I don't get this in the clubs I sometimes will gladly take on parties too. Admittedly ones organised by Trance folk. But you will always have some fuck wit come up to you and ask for the latest Snoop dog.
What fucking planet are they on? The place is going off and people are dancing their asses off and they want to grind with their girlfriend. They would be the only ones.

Egypt has a lot of clubs but from what I remember they are very cheesy and yeah, usually the DJ sucks arse too.

My only advice to you is to work on becoming a good DJ first and foremost. Learn the skills of the trade as they are pretty much the same where ever you spin.
Work on trying to give people what they need (keeping in mind what they need isn't always what they ask for) to have a good time.
Think of it like this.
If they have to come and ask you for something that only one person wants to hear, that's pretty normal and you will always get this. You don't need to do anything about it.
If you have to be asked for something the whole place wants to hear, you are not doing your job.
The only way you can keep track of this is keeping your finger on the pulse of what's going on musically in the world. You HAVE to know what is big at the moment, but even harder you MUST know what is going to be big.

When you are giving people what they need, it's easier to squeeze in a little something that you need.

Cheers

this is very shallow for me to say, but i believe im actually very right on this.... for people who dont like trance, ur best chance to get them to like trance is to get them on xtc... sad but true

People like you are ruining the scene. This is the dumbest thing I have senn in all these boards since I have been posting in here! It was a shallow thing for you to say and you sound like a shallow person. If you feel like I am attacking you by what I am saying, I am!

ha i want to learn the guitar, keyboard and drums!

Posted by Zild on Mar-22-2005 18:46:

I can play the guitar too but I suck ass as the keyboard. Its easy to play though the notes are all regularly spaced unlike a guitar which has notes distributed over an uneven matrix. It just takes hours and hours of practice.

all i was saying that a majority of people that i know, living in new york city where trance isnt popular, that kids only want to tolerate and give trance music a chance when they're on xtc. i dont understand how stating my own personal observations could really be that dumb to you. If you think some where in that that i was condoning drug use or saying "yea thats wat worked for me, take E then listen to trance" then lemme say no, thats no the case, im from new york, and when i was 13 my mother who happens to be from England went over there and brought back some good music for me... So it wasnt a drug thing for me... and nor do i necessarily understand y most kids ive seen who dont like trance, take E and then suddenly do, and nor do i give hits of E to people to get them to like my music... i think that last sentence is wat u thought i meant... not quite the case... thanks ne how for pmin me, mity cool of u

Posted by Zild on Mar-23-2005 21:50:

Or maybe you could play some nice Techno like Frank Kvitta and just lie to them and say its Trance.

sad but true, i wouldnt call them true trancers though, probably just call them ravers, most of these guyz wont go to an event unless they're drugged up.
