This party was one i've had down on my calendar for ages. Not only because it was Demi's first trip to Boa since his mind blowing set on NYE, but also because it marked the One Year Anniversary of his residency at the club. As much of a shame it was to not have Sean Miller in attendence for this event, it was also a blessing in disguise. This gave Demi the whole night to show his diversity, and a chance to take us on a journey from start to finish.
Steve, Jennifer, Marcin and myself entered the club around 1:30. The club was just starting fill up, the club seemed a lot brighter, and the volume was turned down considerably. Demi was starting things off very loungy, slower tempo house, very basic. A few Boa 'noobies' i had met that night were worried they wouldnt like his style based on his choice of records to start things off. I had to assure those who questioned his style early on, that he had the whole night to do his thing.... 'he's just warming things up'. This wasnt NYE, and this wasnt a night he wanted to just jump behind the decks and put a strangle hold on the crowd, it wasnt anything like that night at all.
I spent the first hour mostly socializing with people on my list, some who came as far as Michigan (Darren, and his buddy), as well as others from Pennsylvania. The sounds became deeper around 2:30, becoming a little more progressive, at times almost a 'Sasha' type feel. Very smooth transitions, keeping the tempo steady which was good because it saved my legs for later. He progressed his set just a bit darker and harder with each record, and by the time 4am came around... this is when the madness ensued.
Demi started hitting us with what alot of people came to hear in the first place. That signature sound he dropped each and everytime he's graced us with his unbelievable talent. He picked up the pace, but also unleashed the techy stuff that drove the place mental! His ability to interact with the crowd is unlike any other dj i've ever witnessed. When Demi smiled, so did the crowd. When he jumped up and down for a massive buildup, the crowd followed his lead. Complete control over each and every one of us, the guy is just pure mental behind the decks. The music stayed at a blistering pace until close to 8am, the stuff he then laid down to close the night were by far my favourite records. Druggy, twisted, poppy tribal tracks that set me into a dancing frenzy i've never hit at that stage in a party, EVER. While my crew sat down on the couches for the remainder (as they had been beaten to a pulp), i couldnt help but bust out the nasty in true Floorwhore fashion. I was so into the music that even when Demi killed the last record and it went into slow motion, i still continued to move to the slow beats almost not realising! I got a few laughs - LOL.
After the music was off, and the lights came on, i ran up to the front of the booth and requested one more track (i usually hate that dude, but this time, i was the dude.) I wanted the track he dropped at Midnight on NYE, and the second i yelled up the request, he franticly began looking for it. A few minutes passed, so i walked up to the side of the booth and theres Demi SCRAMBLING through his cd's and records looking for the track. He looked so dissapointed he couldnt deliver the request, that i almost felt bad for asking in the first place. This just goes to show how much this guy really cares about what he does for a living, and being a true crowd pleaser.
Overall not as blistering of a set as NYE, but in my opinion a more enjoyable one. I'm absolutely amazed at what some of these residents can do when given the opportunity to lay down sets of 8+ hours or more. I know im not alone when i say this, but we in Toronto and at Boa are so thrilled to have this guy every time he touches down in the city, and cant wait his return.
p.s. - thanks for bringin James Brown to Carey, i can see why he needed to have one for the club. SICK! LOL

I would have loved to have been first in line. But a complex financial situation would have left me with $20 in my bank account after that night. Combine that with my b-day coming up which I'ma have to celebrate 3 times, and me waiting on a substantial cheque, and the mathematics didn't work.
Cost permitting I will be there for Demi next time, he blew me away on NYE, and I haven't forgotten that.
I missed out this time, I guess I was too tired from all the activity that day and just slept thru the wakeup alarm as well... next time I'll know better. Take the whole day off in preparation, because Demi is THE MAN. He's proven that to me over and over... I just wish I was there for this one too. Next time brutha, next time...
wow what a night
hi Everyone,
been meaning to write something back to say thank you for the incredible well wishes and comments said here...i'll forward each of you a cheque shortly ...
It's been a while since have done an all night set and on the back of doing Stereo the night before all night as well i was super pumped up for delivering my intepretation of how I wanted the night to run musically at Boa the other week.
It was a long set but i found that the time also flew as well. I wanted to really do things my way with regards to structure of the night. I guess yes i wanted to be selfish and take my time and get into my groove as well in that new look booth and once i was in 2nd gear, I guess you guys saw what you have come to expect from the Deeper Substance nights....-ANYTHING GOES..
I am just very grateful to the club for allowing me to really be myself up there in the booth and also to you people who follow me for the ride.
I am a bit bummed off though with my friend james brown...I had brought him along with me on the condition that he would behave and there he is hogging the limelight showing off dancing and prancing and stealing all the glory....lol
I think it will take a bit off time before everybody incluidn the dj;'s get used to that booth it definitely needs to be lowered a little and inside the booth it still needs modifying but it is a work in progress and am sure in time it will become great.
thanks again everybody and see you again sometime in June I believe is the next date
