Bullshit. You can choose to NOT remix those tracks, and instead work in the supermatket for example. Getting money out of producing is only a bonus. It's not like you HAVE to remix those tunes, you can choose not to.

Everyone would like to aspire to something, you know, just to know where the next rung on the ladder is (and what's at the top of the ladder). Maybe some producer really wants to become someone like Moby, who doesn't have to worry about a second job because his producing skills earn him enough to have a professional studio and support the lifestyle he likes to live (whether it be buying a nice pair of shoes vs. a porsche, like Gerry said). It's like anytime the word *gulp* money is said on these boards everyone shits his pants and says the same damn thing - kopi just wants an honest answer to an direct question.

As for the question, sorry I can't answer it.

Thanx man, that's exactly what I meant!
Kopi =o.

Yeah, but if you enjoy doing the remixes....then why not work on them rather than work at the supermarket....and get paid for something you like doing.

For all these banging on about 'It's for the love of the music...etc' well I think that too, but stop acting as if anyone who mentions the money at all is only doing it for the money...like people destroyed Kopi in this thread.
Perhaps you can give the money you get from producing to charity, seeing as you are all so self righteous

of course if the producer didn't get any money then the fat cats at the record labels would just get even more... ok, i appreciate with the smaller labels they probably don't earn a great deal but with larger labels i know i'd rather the producer was getting the money for their work!

and djs don't get that much... people at the kinda level of jon o'bir, gtr, etc (i.e. up and coming but relatively widely known by those into the scene, jon's had an essential mix too) charge around 400-500 per set (depending on the night, location, etc), of which his agent probably takes 10 or 15%, leaving him with as little as 350... if you're only playing once or twice a week (as is likely to be the case) then you're only looking at an 20k-25k salary (obviously production, engineering, drug dealing - joke!, etc can help add to this)

but then of course PvD charged 12k for his 2hr set at slinky on friday night... you can live VERY comfortably on 1 of them a month!

Gha...
First off, I do not want to work in a supermarket, or hardly anywhere else besides either infront of a stage or my computer/studio producing. I don't really care about the money, its not like i want to be rich. But i want my music out there for people to enjoy and I want to be able to work on it and not be stressed/pressured by everyday bullshit work... someone has to do that kind of work and im happy for the people that find it rewarding. but that is not rewarding for me. So i think kopi has a valid question.
Though kopi, you dont have to get your tracks signed to make money off them. Distribute them yourself. Online, offline, everywhere. I think I thats what i will try. I just signed a contract to get my music distributed through edmdigital.com so theres some possible revenue... Though in the super RMB saturated market I am right now (N.A.), I dont think i will do well. I have to get myself out to europe where this kind of music is on top of the game.

As a part owner of a label, I can fill in a few details but I'll stray from getting too specific. We only sign artists that have a lot of potential to bring in a lot of money. This is not so we can role in the cash because, and I wont say the percentage but it is a set rate every artist gets, because the employees of the label get paid less than each individual artist. We get far less than half, I'll go so far to say that we get less than a third of the final profit of the company. Why? Because all we do is have music pressed, published, and distributed. I'll also tell you guys that I encourage the artists to not do it for the money either because as said several times on here, that ends up hindering the income of the company. No income = less artists being signed and less artists who can actually have thier songs pressed. Since the label picks up the tab on practicly everything, it is at a loss if an artist is getting too... cocky. Artists who perform well are what we want, but we also want to reward them for allowing us to do business with them as well as the chance for them to improve greatly by the extra cash. Someone said a while back that a signing wouldnt pay for a months rent. Well that only applies to those other crap labels, mine is much different, much more liberal and more interested in getting notoriety than money. So it really does depend on the label.

Cheers,
Zac

First of all, why you people assume I want to get signed or sort of? Come on man, have u seen my level? It fucking sux, I am not a dumb, I am rook right now, and I totaly know it, so I dont have any interest to get signed, first, because my work right now it's totaly crap, second, because I am learning how to produce Trance and gonna take me at least 3 years to do some decent works, etc, so dont missunderstand the question, it's a simply curiosity PLUS no one answered straight, plz dont tell me you have never asked yourself the same question because is utterly bullshit, plus I dont really want to get signed as a Trance Producer in 5 or 6 years, when I hope *plz god plz* I will be a cool producer, instead I am more into New Age Music, and I have always loved to Produce New Age Music, even when I love Trance and I am trying it right now .

I love your attitude Kopi Keep it up.

Even though you aren't signed, you still post tracks for others to enjoy. Probably more people will listen to your tracks if you post them for free than if you suddenly got signed. I mean, you have to build up a reputation in order to sell. Like Icone. He has become popular BECAUSE of being unsigned and posting tracks for free. That's the beauty of it!

Some beer money for new years eve. About 25 EUR last year

Never really made any money from producing, doesn't matter either.

haha golden respect man, u know how it is

I think my problem with this issue is

Economics.

The way I use my time and energy.

Balancing the time I set aside for producing music and working at "Supermarket" job (for example) in order to pay bills and the *electricity* that i'll need in order to produce music (run the cpu, speakers, etc).

This is very important because the time and energy (or lack of) I put towards music producing, I suspect, may directly affect the quality of the music I produce.

So its like:

"Do I work 40 Hours a week and cut music production hours"

or

"Do I work 20 Hours a week and have much more time for music production" ?

That's up to you. But don't expect music to have an income.

I would gladly pay money in order to PRODUCE music - even if it's not getting signed. It's the producing-part I like, not the aftermath. And I belive most producers agree.

I agree, I love the producing aspect.

I can't expect (my) music to have an income.

If I was dependent on that, i'll be on the streets .

It's definitly not enough. Most producers living off their music also run their own label and such (just to give you an impression..)

but I still agree - cut out all this 'for the love' bollocks. All very well but doesn't put bread on the table...or rice or whatever.

#1- A part of the contract commits you not to disclose any information about paments

#2- The Price producers get from big or small labels is a joke

#3- Unless you play out atleast 3 times a month, you wont be able to make a living out of DJing, that is ofcourse if you have an agency pushing you forward.

Posted by RickyM on Apr-11-2005 23:33:

Surely you must be taking the piss?
