The only other club where the pick-up scene is comparable is Webster Hall, which is even dirtier. Crobar, Spirit, Roxy --> I have never been hit on to the extent that I was hit on at Avalon. I believe this is because the bridge and tunnel crowd goes to Avalon, and in general a bunch of dirty people who for whatever reason, like to frequent that club.

That leads me to my next point. Changing the crowd at Avalon would be nice, but not enough people care about that to come out and have a real good EDM lover concentration on any Avalon night. Simply put, too many real EDM fans who love a DJ playing at Avalon have had such bad experiences there that it would take an open bar, free lap dances, and free admission to bring them back. Just make some of the lap dancers male for us ladies, thanks.

+1, this is so true. Sound problems and heat i can handle (sometimes) but old asian men hitting on me with an idea that i'm a blond girl ready to do everything for money - can ruin everything. hate this!

it has nothing to do with race, it has everything to do with my own experience.

wouldn't simply stating, old men be sufficient then? i guess the "asian" part was necessary to prove your point?

The funniest thing that ever happened to me in terms of getting hit on was that two middle aged men came up to me at Roxy (whew, Avalon's off the hook this time) couldn't speak English very well, and started saying something like, "You come dance? You dance with us?" Then pulled out a stack of $100 bills: "You come with us, you come. We give money. We give drugs."

Just from my experience (I have been to Avalon at least 30+ times, Crobar 50+ times) it seems as if to me that Crobar's crowd is just better. Seems like a lot less freaks there. The drug use is a little more subdued (they may be taking it but it isn't interfering with other people around them). I'm not putting blanket statements on it, it just seems like it's worse at Avalon. Plus, I see more fights at Avalon. I really don't see the Avalon bouncers around too much but at Crobar they are definitely noticeable all around.

Actually, the sound system there doesn't bother me that much lately. Maybe because I'm going deaf already. Too many years of partying. It just sounds muddier to me. Spirit sounds more crisp to me.

It does get really hot when it's really packed but that's really not that frequent. Yeah, for guys like Ferry Corsten and Tiesto. Those guys pack up any place. I love J00F and there is plenty of room to dance and the temperature is mighty fine on those nights. If they just had better ventilation and stronger A/C units during the really big gigs it would be better.

I've seen plenty of dudes harrassing the ladies there, perhaps more so than other clubs. They've definitely harrassed girls I've been with. But they have as well at Crobar. There is a greater population of older Asian dudes there. I think it's because they like trance and Avalon is more of a trance club. Yes, some of them are creepy. But there's definitely some freaky white people too.

As long as there's a greater ratio of (insert race) at a nightclub, there will be a greater ratio of weird (insert race) there as well.

It's the nature of clubs to have guys wearing hulkamania outfits, huge goggles, and postering on the middle of the dancefloor. Right? Well... this is NYC and we do have some interesting people. I like the diversity, always provides entertainment. Just not when they impose on other people's fun.

I've been to Avalon for two major events - Astral Projection on my birthday and VNV Nation in Dec or Jan. I had a blast both times, and I thought it was a great venue.

I definitely do NOT prefer Avalon over the other clubs, however. Both times I was there, the sound was bad (TOO MUCH BASS AND DISTORTION, but it's been months, so maybe getting rid of those speakers helped out with the sound?) and too damn expensive. I live a couple blocks away and it took me over a year to even venture into Avalon because of the price of entry.

None of the other clubs are that much better... they're all overpriced, so I'm more inclined to go to smaller parties/clubs/lounges etc. that have a $5 or $free cover... but I much prefer Roxy and Crobar to Avalon and Spirit, partially for the sound, partially for the layout. I only went to Spirit once, but I had a bad time there... the bass was so loud and vibrating through me so much that at one point I actually had to leave the dancefloor for the hallway cuz I couldn't breathe. That might have been the DJ's fault for jacking up the volume too much, but I'm not sure. I haven't had bad experiences with Roxy and Crobar like that, though the Roxy is usually too loud for me too. But hey, that's clubbing... it's supposed to be loud.

So yeah... unless there's something extra spectacular going on at Avalon, or the price has been significantly reduced (free before a certain time, reduced to $5-$10 before a certain time, whatever), I probably won't go there again for another year.

I'm just sad that I never got to go to Avalon back when it was Limelight.

This I'll definately agree with you on. It seems to me that Avalon succeeds in getting a lot of really good artists here, and they span a pretty wide range of genres, I think. However, I'm not coming back until you get yourself an A/C (or create some draft by use of a fan and some open doors) and either expand your dancefloor or let less people in at a time. The lousy crowd, being charged extra on the way in, and a bad mixer I can overcome (and would), but I cannot dance in four square feets of a sauna - and dancing is the reason why I go clubbing. Nothing personal, just a rational decision.

As to your main point: There's problems everywhere else. Yes, there's problems elsewhere. But I've been to clubs varying in size from Privilege (capacity 10000) to small APT here in NYC, and none of them has such a serious heat problem. Further, "you cannot clean yourself in other people's dirt". Just because other clubs get bad crowds, doesn't mean that you cannot try to improve upon your own. I'm not saying that you should turn away half the people at the door, but when people get drunk and aggressive (as the band of english beerlads that was there this saturday) then you can ask them to leave. You could also try employing some PR-people who know what they're doing. Someone with the same kind of love for the club as you have.

Btw. the "dissing Avalon" phenomena is not a TA-only thing. One of my friends here in NYC went to Avalon for the infamous Sven Vaeth-event some weeks ago. She's never been a TA, and she is never ever coming back she says - even if her favourite DJ would come (again?).

Posted by glittergirl on Apr-12-2005 22:34:

lets not forget Girls Gone Wild and all that other stupid shit they have going on there from time to time. how can you possibly expect that to bring in a better crowd?

and you know what... the venue itself has nothing to do with it. its the people that run it and the way in which they run it. Limelight was one of my favorite clubs a few years ago. I have absolutely no idea who runs it now, but i've had nothing but bad experiences and a handful of things to gripe about every single time i've been there since it is now avalon. now usually i wouldnt care, because i believe you only have as good a time as you set your mind to... but there are just so many little things there that add up and make it suck that bad. i dont need to list them again, i have, and so have many others countless times on this board. while i respect eddie lee trying to back up the club he is a resident for, i dont agree that "this is how it is in every major club." its not. it's really not.

I am still praying that the Roxy will book up some more trance events let alone any decent EDM events. I really like that club and the last time I was there was PVD like 2 years ago.
Anyone have connections their?

Personally, i've had a great time at avalon, but thats only cuz i hung out in the booth. Only time I'd go to Avalon now, is when gabriel and dresden are present, or some other artists that don't think they are too important to have anyone in the booth with them.

One time, 2 yrs back or some junk, I went to see g/d and I brought over to Avalon my vinyl of Beautiful Things to get it signed. I got it signed by them, and eventually the booth got too hectic, so i came back down to the main floor.
Not to brag or something, but I always got my shit signed by djs I look up to or respect alot. Where am I going with this?
Well, some punk ass kids were trying to TAKE THE VINYL FROM ME. Yes, I'm talking about trying to fight me, and take the shit from me. Shiet, little do they know I was friends with the half the bouncers cuz I promote there, and they got tossed in about 30 seconds. Never have I ever had a problem like this before, and its just so sad how people are over there.
It's not oh it happens in all clubs, people are saying shit that happened to them that ONLY happened at avalon, and its for a reason.

To me, two of the best crowds I liked, was Sexy at the Roxy.. and Crobar's current friday parties.
Like, you can just tell that this type of bullshit wouldn't happen there ya know?
Its like when you step into Exit, you know you're among one of the shittiest crowds of any club EVER... and i'm sorry but that'll never change and everyone knows that.. same with avalon

Kudos on grabbin the djs, and we know its hard to successfully run a club. But you can't get offended over personal opinion.. this is TA, home of Roger and Eberts of clubbing and trance

I don't mind Avalon at all. they bring in amazing talent, the space is cool, and from my experience, the staff is cool as well. The crowd doesn't really concern me to be honest. I go to hear and support DJs I like.
