ANOTHER GOD DANM PART OF THE APOCOLYPSE WITH DJ'ing, fucking buy vinyl.

being not a DJ and just a music lover, here's my 2 cents....

its cool if the DJ is playing vinyl, shows the love for music and the willingness to invest into something the DJ enjoys doing, and not something that he HAS to do to make money/be popular/whatever. i also understand the reasons behind some DJs wanting to play CDRs. each DJ has his/her own reasons. some play exclusive promo stuff off CDRs, others dl mp3s and play them off CDRs until the vinyl becomes available for purchase. whatever the reasons, i think as long as a DJ knows and respects where the tunes come from it's not a huge deal. the only problem with a CDR DJ that i would have is if all the tracks were dl'ed for free. speaking of mp3s, lots of labels are now offering tunes for dl for couple dollars, nothing wrong with that. definately saves on shipping and customs.

in other words, if the artist is getting credit and being compensated in one form or another, it shouldnt make a difference whether the track was played off vinyl, CD, or computer.

Looks like we are in agreement here, maybe you missed the point of my last post.

Saying that a turntable is more of an "instrument" than a pioneer cdj unit is like saying that a banjo is more of an instrument than an electric guitar!

I didnt say this, did you read my post? "There is something very satisfying about watching a DJ place a needle on a record and skillfully play the deck like an instrument" Nowhere did I say a turntable is MORE of an instrument, only that its very satisfying to see.

For some reason some of you seem to think that I'm saying it's about resisting technology and fearing Digital music. Its not. Ive been a DJ for a long time and Ive played on every type of deck ,vinly and yes, even the original Denon CD decks and the original Pioneer CD deck. I will even admit to you that in the first years of the 90's I was one of those new young DJ's who used exclusively CD's and enjoyed watching vinyl die!! (Oh my God! Gasps from the crowd!) Yes, it's true! My love affair with vinly really didn't begin until early '94 when vinyl began crawling back from the grave, and I discovered how beautiful it was. (Then I remember being one of the first with Trackmasters and other DJ's telling me too "take that damn goofy thing off")

All I'm saying is that for now I've made the choice to stick to vinyl, make your own choice, but above all please buy your music, and I encourage DJ's to not let vinyl die.

good debate, lets run with it!

bedroom dj vs professional dj

-professional dj-
it's important to realize that this argument has absolutely no relevance to professional djs who make a living from gigging around the world.

it's stupid to assume that they are going to wait until there are promos (which are a whole other story) because it is in their personal interest to play (good) songs as soon as they can.

ex. james holden - played here the other night exclusively from cd. do you think this is because he is anti-vinyl? i would assume not since he has his own label.

-bedroom dj-
lots of validity in the argument that using only cds hurts 'the industry'. some issues (like slamming beatport, edmdigital etc) seem kind of odd. sure there is lots of crap, but thats part of being a dj, finding the non-crap tunes amongst the crap.

ex. otis music - fantastic used record shop (sean can attest to this) but about 98% of the tunes in that shop are complete garbage. they definitely did not deserve to get pressed.

"one mans junk is anothers gold" (something like that). if everyone posting in this thread posted tracklistings to sets, I'm sure i could find a load of tunes i think are complete shit, a waste of plastic, be it a cd or a record. but clearly the dj thinks they are badass, its called style, everyone has their own.

im sure im gonna get some replies like "you miss the point" etc. sure, i probably miss the more business oriented point of view, but thats ok with me, to be honest, im an advocate of the creative commons approach to music.

if i ever make any dope tracks they will be availble for high quality downloads, free.

peace, caleb
