if it turns out overheating (sounds most likely) is NOT your problem, you can try changing the hibernation settings by;

right-click desktop
select properties
screensaver tab
power button

Jamie,

Mine has been doing the same thing.
I spoke to a computer technician that I know and he said it is most likely due to having corrupt files on your computer from file sharing, internet, etc.
The best way to completely get rid of it is to back up anything you need and have the harddrive reformatted.
It sucks, but that's what he told me to do.

corrupt files? dunno about that.. maybe corrupt files from the install not completely correctly, but otherwise.. no.

unless he is terming spyware, viruses and stuff as corrupt files.

Dood it could be a little more extensive than just a heating issue

Can you supply to me the following specs on your sys

- what is the mb manufacturer and model #
- what's the processor speed and manufacturer
- what type of ram r u running SD or DDR and how much ram are u running
- how many optical drives and hd are u running (optical drive = any rom of some sorts)
- what wattage of power supply are u running

We discuss applications/programs run after figuring out these first in order to troubleshoot

pm me the details or post it and we'll be able to give some suggestions to clear up this issue hopefully by tomorrow

Peace

Okay, so like 1 month ago, I come home and my computer is just off. I think to myself, thats strange. Anyways, turn her on and just go about my business... then I wake up the next morning, and she's off again... only its kinda like a "pseudo-off"... bc the green light is still on, but theres no HD activity... its like its in a sleep mode or something, like theres power, but not enough to run it...

Anyways. When it does this. I gotta press the power button to turn it off "for real". Then press it again to turn it back on... only this wont work unless I've waited a period of time after its mysteriously shutdown. I just don't get it.

I was originally thinking that the power supply was going, but then should I not be unable to turn it back on at all?

Then I was thinking maybe I have a damage power supply cord, so I switched my computer power cord, and then everything had been working fine (Yes, i did check to make sure that the cord was fully connected to both the back of my computer and to the powerbar... that wasnt the issue). But then I come home the night before last, and its happening again. It'll maybe stay on and running for about 2-4 hours before it does the turning-off thing. Its happened 4 times in the past 2 days now.

Any suggestions on the issue at hand?... Id rather NOT take it to the shop yet incase its something I can replace myself so i dont hafta pay the retarded labour costs.

Thanks yall for any suggestions. Totally appeciated. Cheers.

sounds like you have a virus, try running anti virus boot disks, even if you have some antivirus program running most of them wont pick it up youll have to run the latest defination and use their boot disks such as norton.

If not you have hardware problem.

Almost guaranteed overheating problem.

Get some compressed air and take your case apart.

There was MASSIVE amounts of dust when I checked the fans at lunch. Both fans are in working order, though my computer is close to my baseboard heating... but thats never ever been an issue previously.

the dust build up could be causing the overheating prob

Actually we have to find the root of the problem as to why it's overheating first (that's why we need the specs) in order to stop it from overheating. Either way...it never hurts to clean ur sys out so hop to it asap hehehehee

Thumbs up Need some help eh

Jamie, if you need to go the absolute last resort you can bring it to my place and re-install to Server 2003. It's a faster more stable version of XP, a good upgrade. Sounds like you have been checking out too much porn yall. Nate.

Posted by karim on Apr-22-2005 02:21:

It's prolly not an overheating problem. I had the same problem my self, the fan was fine, the processor temp was good, the memory was scanned and checked. It turned out to be the power supply, and such issues tend to be quite common.

So don't forget to let us know if you resolved the issue. Otherwise, we can review the specs and troubleshoot this way cuz there can be many variables of why it overheats

One variable could be:
That the ps is not strong enuf for the number of aps you have running in the background now

but a better inspection of your specs will draw a more precise conclusion

So let us know

Posted by Arsondude2.0 on Apr-26-2005 06:42:

Its a virus...stop looking at cheap porn online that fucks up the registry keys. It you run any diognostic programs they automatically shut down because thats what the virus does...therefore you cant get rid of it. I had to system restore my whole computer and lost everything and i had to do it twice to kill it...lol

Its a worm that makes you computer shutdown and on and in sleep mode sometimes. Its a fucking pisser.
