Woah woah woah.... you just said "cause i like my phones to enclose my ear..." Uh, that means that you want the earpad to go AROUND your ear, rather than laying ON your ear, correct? If that is true, than you should say, "I like Circumaural headphones better than supraaural headphones." And, if that is the case, there is a very easy, very nice mod to make the MDR-V6's circumaural. You just add those pads from Beyerdynamic!

yea... i just said it in plain english though... most of us here don't have the extended vocabulary... ooo, look at teh record go around... and i digress... anywho... yes i do want the cirumaural or whatever you said that go around my ear... it helps in a high volume situation to hear the beat you're matching
i'm sure that there's someone out there who would like to disagree with me, go ahead, this is just MY personal preference

Posted by Gluegun on Nov-27-2001 05:04:

Uh, sorry about the whole vocabulary deal....

but, anyways, yea, get the pads, they will improve comfort, isolation, bass, tame the highs a little, etc.

Question

Help! The more I hear about those Sony MDR-V6 the more I want them. But where can I get them in Germany?! I searched the net back to front and found not one German distributor. Can anyone help me?

Some more questions though:
Are they easy to drive? i.e. can I plug them directly into my soundcard/portable (I don't think I'll take em along but anyways)

I currently have the Audio Technica ath-PRO6. I have not found any infos about their quality on the net. (yes, I searched the headwize forum) I personally like them alot but maybe only because I've never heard anything better.

Given the circumstances could you perhaps recommend some other headphones (ones I could get in Germany)? I'm on a budget and don't want to replace my not so cheap headphones for something just marginally better. I want 'big' ones that go around the ear (circumaureal as I've learned but supraaureal should be fine also.) Blocking outside noise would be good (to mask my loud PC and anyone trying to disturb my listening experience ) Swivel would be nice too ("for DJ use" as my old ones say). Looks are not an issue they just have to be comfortable.

I think I could manage to get those Koss UR-20 but they are relatively expensive! (compare: i remember you said around 25$. Here they are about three times as much!)

[edit: i meant Koss UR-20 but wrote KR-20]

Well, you're in germany. You have Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser for the CHEAP.

The Beyerdynamic DT250-80 is better sounding than the V6's, more accurate, but it doesn't fold.... but, other than the folding deal, it should be GREAT...

The Sennheiser HD25 is good, too!

Here, check this out! (By teh way, MDR-7506 = MDR-V6)

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showt...=&threadid=3955

just search headwize and head-fi for audio technica, if you want...rather than a specific model number, maybe?

HOWEVER, these *are* expensive headphones, even if you get them for relatively "cheap", LOL!

Posted by patticus on Nov-28-2001 00:02:

but my sony v6s DO go around my ear not on my ear

Posted by Gluegun on Nov-28-2001 00:12:

That's cause you have small ears. With the normal pads, if you have small ears, they go around them, if you have big ears, they go on them. With the Beyer pads, the headphones will generally go around them, no matter what size ears you have.

Posted by patticus on Nov-28-2001 07:04:

yes i do have small ears, its useful to be chinese

Cool

I noticed not a lot of you mentioned the sennheiser hd25 phones.. I think they're the best dj cans you can get.. I've had the sonys, technics, but i find the sennheisers the best.. U don't even realise u have a set of cans on ur head sometimes! That's how comfy they are! Maybe the cord is a bit short but you can always buy an extension for it..

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-01-2001 19:08:

k-cee, yes, I do know those... in fact, check this thread that I linked to earlier for a comparison of the MDR-V6's (the 7506's), the HD25's, and the Beyerdynamic DT250-80

I am using Grado SR-80's at this very moment...and am very happy

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-07-2001 04:49:

Woah. Since when did people HERE, of all places, begin to use kickass-sounding, awesome-for-trance, not-made-for-djs, completely-just-for-listening-in-a-quiet-environment headphones like the SR-80's?

Posted by YuVaL on Dec-07-2001 12:41:

Are the Techniqs RP-1200DJ good?

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-07-2001 21:23:

Yes, they are pretty good, but one doesn't buy a set of headphones just because they are supposedly 'good'. One buys a set of headphones for their specific needs. Here, we can assume, "you'll be using them for DJing", but, there's more to it, you know? Is it gonna be live? Do you need incredibly exaggerated midbass? Do you ever plan to use them for other sorts of mixing? What types of DJ-features do you need? Is it okay if the earpieces only flip up, or do you need them to bend in other strange ways, for comfort? Do you need them to bend or fold at all? How much outside noise do you need them to block out? What is your price range? Can you buy online? Do you want them to go over your ears or around them? Will you be using htem for normal music listening? Will you be plugging them into a headphone jack with some decent power?

Questions like that.

In my case - since money doesnt fall from thesky in my area..
i would get the V6's because they are so much BETTER VALUE than any of the MoS headphones..
while the V6's are at US$70, the IXOS DJ1001's are like $150!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now dont tell me your going to get the MoS headphones when u can buy 2 V6's!

...ever since someone decided to replace his $30 Phillips with something *nice*. For me, I needed something that could suit my compilation mixing needs, and the superb sounding Grado SR-80's do just that for 80 bucks.

I loved trance before, but now I am just mezmerized...rapture taste so sweet

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-10-2001 07:41:

You know, the Alessandro Music Series Ones are the "musician's" counterpart to the Grado SR-80's, more balanced, made more for musicians/people doing mixing/recording...

*hums mildly*

hmmm.. nice questions
the problem is that i dont really know what midbass is.. and yes im planning to use them for djing sometime soon.. if i get them.. i want them to go over my ear and not on my ear.. i have about 250 $ to spend.. i dunno if i can buy online cause i live in israel and i dunno many places that ship here.. i only plan on mixing trance music no other type of music.. i want them to block all outside noise.. i know thats usefull for djing.. about the earpiece thing.. didn't quite understand what u mean.. can u be more specific?..

Okay...

how about I give you some overkill here, and ask you to read, or at least skim, these three articles?

http://headwize.com/articles/hguide_art.htm

http://headwize.com/articles/judging_art.htm

http://headwize.com/articles/mixing_art.htm

Alright? If you DONT want to read that stuff, fine...I'll try to explain the earpiece deal some more.

Okay, you are aware that many headphones fold to make them more compact and easy to transport, correct?

Many DJ headphones also fold or pivot in many useful ways, usually for one-eared monitoring. The earcups, the whole enclosure mechanism, often pivots. Sometimes, it pivots on the Y axis (front to back), which is useful for DJing because you can just turn your headphone for one eared monitoring, or rest it on your shoulder and only listen to it when you need to. Others pivot over the X axis, up and down, which should still work for one eared monitoring.

The headphones that I tend to recommend here, the Sony MDR-V6's, only pivot on the X axis, up and down... I meant to ask, is that a problem?

Also, as for the earpads themselves, it seems you want CICUMAURAL, or 'around the ears' earpads. The V6's stock earpads are supraural ('on the ears'), and, unless you replace them with a different model of earpads (HIGHLY SUGGESTED), they will remain that way

You're welcome man!! Happy listening...

Posted by Gluegun on Dec-19-2001 04:20:

if anyone was wondering about getting the MDR-V6's or MDR-7506's in Canada (they are the same headphone), you can get theme here at an absurd price:

http://www.vistek.ca/search/detail.asp?SKU=159430

however, I'm thinking it might just be cheapest to order them from here (as soon as they get some new ones)

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/hogwildstore/mdrv6.html

and simply pay all that ungodly shipping. might end up cheaper, who knows...

Anyways, in GENERAL, look for the MDR-V6's or the MDR-7506's in places that might sell PROFESSIONAL, *not* consumer, but PROFESSIONAL headphones. Like, musician's stores, stores with professional video equipment, all that stuff...
