It's even way more old school than these, but I just got the first season DVD of Rocky and Bullwinkle a while back. They're so sweet, especially Peabody.

When I was a kid though, I used to watch Transformers, TMNT, and a little bit of the Smurfs. I can't really remember them all though. Hahahaha, oh, and that David the Gnome show.

The best anime series was:

Captain Tsubasa!!!1 (aka Ollie and Benji)

As for American cartoons, I liked Captain Planeteer (oh dear ), TMNT, Smurfs, Ghostbusters and there are certainly other cartoons I might be forgetting. Unlike other kids though, I wasn't much into Dungeons and Dragons and I watched Thundercats just for the sake of it (and because I liked the "thunder, thunder... thundercat! Hoooe!!!!" bit ). I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

oh yea i liked the care bears too. hahah u just totally reminded me of a childhood memory...random.

i remember when i was little, after watching an episode of care bears, i went in the kitchen and i was like, "mom, do u think there's really like this whole world up there in the clouds and there's care bears up there watching out for us?"

Posted by NiteMer on May-03-2005 15:58:

I still have almost all of the Thundercats figurines. Liono, cheetarah, panthro, kit, and kat, the siberian tiger guy, and the guy that looks like him that was in the original cast.

I have the original Cobra Commander too, and Hawk.

Voltron was the shit too!

That has to be the most blasphamest thing I have ever heard in my entire life, but I dont blame the author as its a sad state of affairs with western viewers and anime.

Its almost exactly like people saying "Trance is DJ Sammy", its that same mentality. Look at the works of Studio Ghibli (Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away, and soon Howls Moving Castle) which are some of the most beautiful pieces of art ever put to cell!

I dont think you could find a singal peice of western animation, movie or TV that compares to the quality expressed in those movies (not to mention the dozen other Ghibli films). And if you need quality examples from a TV series, look at the animation in the series AIR... it literally made me draw tears at how well it was done!

Another good example is Beyond the Clouds, which recently was fan released over here, and I have a preview up on one of my sites:

Anime is also great in that it covers a broad spectrum of ages, you have anime for toddlers all the way up to people in their 40's and 50's.

Anime is not just for kids as it is portrayed in the US.

I dont think kids want to watch a murder mystery drama that takes place in 1980's western Germany (as in the series Monster) or some of the other more adult orientated works.

This is just a long winded rant really... and pretty off topic... but it just bugs the shit out of me how low US quality has gotten, even on the stuff that isnt produced here!

Wow you're such a rabid fanboy. Ghibli movies (some of em) are pretty sweet but they are not representative of anime, they are the exception, just like feature length Disney films are the exception in western animation.

99% of anime DOES look hella cheap, with recycled frames, stills, loops, silhuettes all over the place, like in dragon ball z or inuyasha.
