yeah i got an email from MySony a few weeks ago about this...i'm still lagging behind with my NW-HD1

This is priced at 200 GBP, which is less than the 20GB ipod, and 20-30 pounds more than the iPod mini. ITs well priced and will do well. It just needs a bit more exposure for it to take a big slice of apples market.

When i first saw it, it reminded me of an ipod, due to the orientation of the screen and player. but with this player, it automatically adjusts its display from longitudinal to horizontal depending on your preference, which is nifty.

Oh and i'm pretty sure that this player uses the Sony Jog-Dial on it, which is good and has been used on other things like its mobilephones and MD players.

I still have my old 3g 20gb Ipod.. gets the job done

I'm not trading up until it breaks down. When I do though I'm not sure what I'll get but I'll read reports to find out.

I need something that will be able to store gigs of RAW format pictures from my CF disks, and I want to be able to view them.

Nikon has this nifty little gadget that I can't remember the name of, but I'm thinking I might get that.

all those pics yet i dont see a jog wheel

are there at least cue points you can set to scan through lets say if you want to put a massive tiesto vs cors set on there?

Looks pretty awesome to me, love the removable battery feature. All they need now is an external housing for an AA battery

As for full mp3 functionaility, that is also available on the Vaio Pocket. No need for Sonic Stage (thankgod sa it is a POS ) with the drag and drop transfer

Ipod mini all the way . Quality piece of kit. Kamil - why are you in love with sony? Do you work for them or something?

Posted by -=M=- on May-09-2005 11:17:

im very happy with my nw-hd1 mp3 playa

20gb small, light and the atrac 64kbps format is imo just as good in quality as 192kbps mp3 - means that i can fit a shitload of music on it --- i have approx 30gb of pure trance on this compy... have it ALL on my sony atrac and still have about 12gb free on it

fkn amazing compression right there

im a current owner of the HD3 and i love it, the battery life owns the ipod by far. music sound quality is superb, the only issue is SonicStage which I see as getting fixed without any doubts.

Sony all the way..

I recently bought the new Sony NW-HD5 from a store in Akihabara, Tokyo. Cost: about $325 (U.S.).

The Pros:

(1) The player is significantly smaller and lighter than the 20 gig ipod. The external casing is made out of a metallic material that feels sturdy and is hard to scratch.

(2) The player itself has vastly superior sound options to the ipod. It has a 6 band equalizer system that allows you to control bass and treble which produces amazing sound. If you listen to bass heavy music (reggae, hip-hop) the NW-HD5 is a must.

(3) It can be charged with a simply charge (a basic wire attached to a plug) that is easy to carry on long trips. Also, the NW-HD5 comes with the option of replacing the battery!!

(4) The battery life on the NW-HD5 is LONG! If you like to switch songs often, adjust bass and treble levels or just simply have fun with a player then the NW-HD5 is for you. If you want to recharge everyday (or twice a day) then go with an ipod. Ive used it liberally for a week on one charge.

Cons:

(1) You have to use Sony Sonic Stage program which consistently fails to recognize the names and tiles of songs and albums. This means that you have to spend a lot of time manually inputting in the titles of songs (and artists) before transferring them into the NW-HD5. The solution is to use the i-Tunes software to transfer songs from a CD to your hard drive in MP3 format. Then using the Sonic Stage Software, find the songs/albums on the hard drive and transfer the songs onto the NW-HD5. The entire process is very easy and takes almost no time.

(2) The NW-HD5 does NOT come with a remote control for the player (the kind you clip on your shirt). But if you already own a Sony portable audio device with the remote control then you can simply use that control on this new device without buying a new one. HOWEVER, the older remote controls do not allow you to control all the functions on the player. For example, you cant see the song or album title or control bass/treble. But you can skip tracks, control volume etc.

(3) There is a lag (delay) in accessing some of the main menus. When accessing certain menus and functions on the NW-HD5, it runs slower than the ipod. Often the lag is up to 3 seconds. An Access message appears that tells you that the machine is thinking. Though surprising, I didnt find it to be much of a problem.

(4) The resolution on the NW-HD5s screen is inferior to the ipods. Although the screen it is large, easy to read and provides all the information you might need, the screen on the ipod is sharper, clearer and has better resolution. Also, a ghost trail occurs when the device is scrolling through the titles of songs that do not fit completely on the screen. This seems to be caused by some sort of lag or slowness in the screens ability to process the information. I think its a bit weird but certainly not a major problem.

Sonicstage is the biggest piece of shit software ever.

There is hope though.. v3.1 had a lot of bug fixes - but it still has a long way to go.

Posted by trewqy on May-09-2005 16:34:

Wtf? U need to use A PROGRAM TO TRANSFER FILES??

Fuck that shit. I-river all the way..

And yes.. kamil is a sony whore.. hes been raving about how great it is since forever. I'm no ipod lover..nor am i a hater.. but to say "fuck u ipod lovers" is just childish to begin with. Do they really give a shit if their player isnt that good? they bought it in the first place.. and if they wanna be a trendwhore, so be it.

the removable battery is fucking killer tho. apple cant compete with that. its beat. done.

GAME OVER APPLE.

and to all the ipod trendwhores: FUCK YOU.
but... does it work on the mac? looks like the answer is NO. Way to produce a real killer

Does it have the 40/60 gig options? Not going to get me to switch over. My 60 gig is full and i want bigger.

Does it have the quick scroll through songs? i dont see it. Not going to win me over with all the sets i listen to.

i always thought that in sales, you arent supposed to ignore any market. 5% is 5% more sales thanyou could have had. That;s a huge number when you look at how many people make up that percentage.

irrelevent point.

this isnt about sales, this is about which product is better.

furthermore, even if it were about sales, just because it doesnt appeal to mac users which make up for 5% of the computer industry hardly means its not gonna beat the ipod. dont be arrogant, us mac users arent the biggest shit in the world.
