Trance was born in Germany and all the old classics are from there. But something very essential happened in the Netherlands 1996. Allthough people had started producing trance over there, they didn't made it big in the rest of europe. In late 1996, a guy called Vincent De Moor (I think you all know him) released "Flowtation". It turned out to be better than most trance productions ever made in Germany by then, and it was a success. A new style of trance was born. The gabber culture died and trance moved in. At the same time, two other producers slowly started to grow, Ferry & Tiesto. After a couple of hits from them and more from VDM, Holland was suddenly the "Trance Nation" in europe. The strange thing is that Germany had hundreds of trance producers, but less than 10 dutch ones made the Holland scene better than the German.

UK trance is the best!

Lange
Ian Masterson (Heliotropic/Trouser Enthusiasts/Monoboy)
Ricky Simmonds & Stephen Jones (Space Brothers/Chakra/Ascension)
Matt Darey
Rob Searle
Above and Beyond/Free State
Solar Stone
Chris Cowie (X Cabs/De Niro)
Transa
Steve Helstrip (Thrillseekers/En Motion)
Andy Perrin (Pulser/Olmec Heads)
Skynet UK

Yep, Lange is also very good.
His productions like Atlantis - Fiji and Drifting Away are top-quality melodic trance.

So all of you underestimate the UK trance scene

German - masters of hard tunez
UK - masters of progressive
Dutch - masters of uplifting trance

Everything below is generalizations - but then again the question begs it:
Personally, I like the german type the most - it just sounds happier and/or less pompous. To me UK trance have this cold distant sound to it and dutch trance lacks teeth in the beat department. Of course there's exceptions, and truely great tracks have come from all of the countries - Madagascar and Urban Train to name some of my current favourites.

But generally trance today is no match for the groundbreaking days of 90-96 (Eye Q anyone) - something I think is reflected in the sheer volume of tracks comming out today that is covers of earlier hits. Also at that time, there was no such thing as 5-6 versions of each track (including the bad ones) as there is today - the creative talent was focused on new stuff.

Man, looking at that last paragraph I can see I'm starting to sound like my father - Back in those day I didn't

Btw. Is A.C. Boutsen (Odyssee of Noises, Brainchild & Cygnus X) dutch or german?
