Production why don't you go and learn the Piano and take some
classical musical lessons and in 5 years when you have good
job, get the gear

Downloading software is not a criminal activity. You are sharing the software with who ever put it up for download. They obviously don't consider it stealing as they are allowing people access. If anyone's the criminal here its the people who allow it too be shared (I have no problem with these people). But your narrow minded and, in your own words, nothing I say can change that!

Good point made by Peter Campbell. What's your view on MP3's DJTJ? Is that stealing also, or is that ok?

I`m having Keyboard lessons for 4 years now and I`m producing with Fruityloops for a long time now but I want to take it to a higer level now.... so that`s why I`ve asked for reason

I very, very much doubt that the person putting it up for download paid for their copy in the first place, and even if they did, they paid for either a single or a limited licence. That means that they can use it on one computer at a time, or if they got a multiple licence on a limited number of computers according to how many licences they paid for. Putting the software on the internet for download is illegal, as they are the only person who has the rights to use the software.

It all depends.

It is perfectly legal to download as many mp3s from anywhere. However, this is for trial purposes only - the idea is that you download the song, listen to it to decide if you like it, and if you do then you go to a shop and buy the CD or 12". If you own a copy of the song on CD or 12" or whatever then you are allowed to keep the mp3. If not, you should remove the file within 48 hours of downloading it.

This is what I tend to do. I often download mp3s from the tranceaddict site, with the intention of listening to them to decide whether or not to buy them.

I'm not saying that in the past I haven't illegally downloaded and kept mp3s; I have. I had over a gigabyte of them. But since then I've grown up and realised that this is cheating the artists out of their hard earned cash. And I'm not talking about Britney Spears, S Club 7 etc, I'm talking about the small dance music groups who release promo copies hoping to get signed to labels and
so on, who actually do need the cash. If it wasn't for these people we wouldn't have dance music.

Imagine for a moment, that you had legitimately bought a copy of Reason, Fruityloops, Cubase etc along with an array of Roland keyboards and drum machines, and you were trying to make a living off producing dance music. You manage to get Tiesto to play one of your tracks on white label, getting it signed to Hooj or something in the process. Then, some bastard comes along, rips his vinyl copy to mp3 and posts it on the net so that anyone who wants a copy gets it for free. All that time and money wasted, because no-one's actually going to buy the track and give you some kind of a return.

Did I say that? Point me to where I said that please.

I only use the $300 figure because it is the retail value (or thereabouts) of Reason, which is the whole point of this thread. It is not meant to be a figure that below which, it's OK to steal and above which it is a bad thing.

Stealing something of any value is bad, whether $300, $3,000 or $0.03. Surely you have some morals?

Well. usually I'm not into this sort of discussions but I just had to add something here.

Downloading software from the internet is fundamentally different from picking up $300 of music hardware from a shop.(or stealing a bike). I will explain my view by telling a really stupid multatuli-ish tale.


See it like this. A friend of you has invented a machine. It looks like 2 microwaves and you can put a bean into one and a $300 synth in the other. He pushes a button and *ZAP!* the bean changed into the same synth that was in the other thing! You duplicated it! Your friend says "take it home. it's yours. I don't want any money for it." Wow you think, that's nifty....however, the synth manufacturer missed the opportunity to sell it to you...so that's the moral downer to this one... -----> ok this is downloading software illigaly

Now the other side
You come near a shop....wow you think as you see that cool $300 synth thru the window....the vendor is taking a pee, and you quickly nick the synth and take it home. There you think about year actions. You actually took away gear that the vendor could have sold another time to somebody else...the shop owner bought it, and not only has he not sold it with profit, he has made a loss because he didn't even receive the money he paid for it.


I'm not saying one is better than the other. But the loss is obviously bigger in the second case. In the first case it just is a missed opportunity to sell something (software), in the second case money disappears as the shop owner bought something and it disappeard into thin air. Can you see the difference?

exactly. downloading is OK, because the original copy stays there. you aren't taking anything from anyone.

breaking into a store is wrong, because the person you steal from is now without what they had.

the only thing downloading does is take away a potential sale from someone, but, in most cases, they wouldn't have bought it anyway.

I certainly wouldn't pay $300 for reason, just to toy with it at home.
and I wouldn't pay $20 to buy a DJ mix CD either, no matter how good it is.

I would however pay $20 for an artist CD (like BTs Rare and Remixed which I bought last week) turns out a lot of the tracks on it suck, but oh well. BT rocks, and I supported him.

whereas, say Tiesto Magick 6, that set rocks, I like the whole thing, but I'm not going to order it from blackhole, when I can just download it.

By downloading it, all I get is enjoyment of music, the label loses nothing.

and, in the end, the music industry gains, because I am now a music lover, I'm going to buy tons of vinyl once I get my decks.

After this, I'm going to shut up, cos I'm starting to sound like a nagging granny.

This is not the point at all. Reason is not designed to be toyed with at home, it is a professional piece of software aimed at professional producers. If it was aimed at the adolescent bedroom producer it would be called "Crap eJay" and would cost $19.95 from your local K-Mart.
