Me, Johan and friend the night before....talked with him for 20 minutes....incredible guy, he just kept on talking. Why do I look so happy?

JOHAN IS A FUCKING GOD!!!!

OMG I can't believe I missed this shit! I KNEW I was going to regret it! OMG. OMG. OMG.

Hearing yalls reviews is KILLING me on the inside. I had to miss my 2nd favourite DJ because of other parties I'd committed to in the comming weeks... but jesus christ... arg!

Man, and I love those "IN SESSION WITH JOHAN GIELEN" bits... absolutely LOVE them! <333333333333.

I don't think I'm gonna let myself live down missing this event. All I can hope and pray for is that Johan will be back sometime (very) soon and I will experience him then and make up for what I lost out on!

Seriously, I dont know what drugs K La is on. I saw his(?) post in the roll call thread after I got home from this event about mixing like 'oil and water'. I have to tell you, from this veteran clubber, Johan is probably one of the best trance DJ's out there in terms of skills. I've seen him over 10x and maybe I've heard 1 minor mistake. He also will scratch, tweak & sample like mad, which is something most trance DJ's dont do. Anyone who witnessed Johan (2 yrs ago) spinning Igor S-"Boomerang" on THREE turntables at once knows that only someone with SERIOUS SKILLS can do that.

Also, Johan has never been one to drop some epic pussy trance set. Its always been high energy madness from him, which is why I love him so.

A-FUCING-MEN Nat!

Johan on the mixer is INSANE with skills! He never ceases to blow my mind

And the just PURE ENERGY the man radiates behind the decks is enough to get ANYONE hoppin'. He just gets the blood flowing in you when you see his face and the absolutely enjoyment he gets outta spinning for the crowd. I dont care whut ppl say about him looking weird or strange, Johan is a top-notch DJ and one that Id truly be humbled to meet and have a convo with (and I love his decisively unique style... ye ye, very distinct!!)

The man is a genius; he had an absolutely wicked set; bombs after bombs...I lost my voice from screaming with each bloody track!!!

Another observation: Chinese people really love their trance. Last night put Sat. @ Guv to shame. (Forgive me, I don't mean to be rude here; they may not be Chinese, I'm being over simplistic...call me a Paki and we'll call it even )

But they were dancing it up like the rest of 'em, at least front and centre, where I was most of the night. I really loved the vibe (wish there were more TAs I met...wow where did all these posts come from?! LOL!)

I have to say I was REALLY impressed with the club. I will definitely be hitting the Republik again, another one of these Sunday nights when my man Dennis Hahn will be residing!

Excellent sound, loved the lights and the screens; and that massive stage in the front is a podium whore's wish come true!!! (yes, that's right KKEFKA!!! )

totaly agree. his sets freakin MOVE you. and he was on his mixing game last nite for sure, 90% of the mixing was perfect, only a few minor ones here and there which weren't a big deal. (because he was interacting with the crowd to much and raising the energy levels in everyone to give a fuck unlike some of the boring ass djs who are locked into there headphones for there whole set not even cracking a smile). (you get that a lot in progressive djs, no offense, i love progressive music, but not much for clubbing to, cause the djs bore me. its good late nite music in my car more then anything).

Had the opportunity to hear this track before the gig, so I knew it was coming! Definitely going to be a big summer tune.

How the hell did I manage to take 236 pics at this party?!?!?!?!?!? F*ck me......

^^^^^^
let's see 'em Nat! Lots of cameras flashing last night but I haven't seen much yet... can't wait to see this pics from this incredible night!

Man o' man what a time... I was absolutely blown away by the amazing turnout and tight vibe.. people were friendly and going absolutely nuts to the music last night and that's the most enjoyable part of being a dj. This night by far exceeded my expectations!

Johan's set was nice and banging from start to the time I left... really hard and melodic... from a technical standpoint this guy is the most creative trance dj I've ever seen and you have to respect that whether you like his style or not.

Great meeting some new folks last night, too many to mention. Thanks to everyone whop came out with their energy to make it such an amazing night... I can't wait to do this again!!!

Is there any way to convert a MOV. file (Quicktime) to another more compressed format? I got a sweet video clip of the Saltwater track.

Considering I took 900 pics over the course of 16 days in Israel, something IS SERIOUSLY WRONG w/last nights figures....

Posted by tatgirl on Jun-21-2005 04:16:

Seriously, i dont think I've ever taken that many pics at a party EVER. Narrowing them down. Down to 160 so far.
Bed is calling.
To be continued....

LOL at the responses, keep them coming

The sound was no where near the level of quality the rest of the club was. The bass was at best muffled. It had no punch what so ever, of course this would be expected when each bin consisted of one 15" woofer. Dont get me wrong, in comparison to most clubs it was good, just not at the same level as the rest of the Republik. Compared to Stereo, The Docks or Boa, the system at Republik is sub-par.

As for the z103 comment by whom ever, you make me laugh! The track selection was tolerable, but no where near as good as some of the tracks he layed down in the past. For example, his set at Trance Energy destroyed last night. There was quality hard epic in his Trance Energy set. His set at Republik had a lot of boring tracks with few quality build ups. As for his mixing being flawless, are you guys kidding. I counted 4 times where the beats clipped and could have been fixed a lot quicker than they were. The number one thing that stopped me from dancing was when he butchered the bass on his mixes. Almost all of the mixes where obvious, me personally, thinks a good mix is one that hard to notice. An example of a quality mix would be anything by the Therapist. A flawless mix (let alone set) should keep you moving the entire time. Once again, compared to many djs, it was good mixing, but I expect more from a world class dj.

If nights like this are getting the rave reviews they do, then R.I.P. trance... I guess the days of old are now over!

Posted by Jayx1 on Jun-21-2005 05:00:

actually there are bassbins that are hidden all along the bottom of the stage. Stand in the middle of the stage next time and tell me how it feels ...The ones you refer to are probably the horns which are on the stage which regulate the midrange as far as i know.

If at the beginning of the night it was a little low its because we have to respect our neighbours. Later on though when businesses are closed we are able to juice the system.

Posted by Wyndham on Jun-21-2005 05:16:

ya when the base was turned up quite high at the end of johans set, or when he was just gettin off..if you stood right at the top of the stairs on the way to the dj booth. your whole body would vibrate..felt like it was from the feet up, it was pretty cool.. so guess thats why.

Posted by shiah on Jun-21-2005 05:52:

lol is this k la guy for real?...

"The sound was no where near the level of quality the rest of the club was."

-??? translation?

"The bass was at best muffled."

-??? did u have ear plugs on??...

"It had no punch what so ever, of course this would be expected when each bin consisted of one 15" woofer."

-congradulations.. u managed to go around counting the visible woofers on the floor.. how about the ones that arnt visible?

"Dont get me wrong, in comparison to most clubs it was good, just not at the same level as the rest of the Republik."

-what republik?... the rest of the star wars republik?...

"Compared to Stereo, The Docks or Boa, the system at Republik is sub-par."

-U personally know this because u analized the specs and ur an audio engineer...

"As for the z103 comment by whom ever, you make me laugh!"

- that was i... thanks i like to think im funny from time to time..

"The track selection was tolerable, but no where near as good as some of the tracks he layed down in the past. For example, his set at Trance Energy destroyed last night."

-this being trance energy 04.. or 05?.. either or yea they both were good.. 04 superior to 05.. but how can u compare one of the largest trance concerts to republik?.. on a sunday nite...

"There was quality hard epic in his Trance Energy set. His set at Republik had a lot of boring tracks with few quality build ups."

-so lemme get this straight... a dj is now a robot.. and they have to play the same shit all the time.. right..and thats unique.

"As for his mixing being flawless, are you guys kidding. I counted 4 times where the beats clipped and could have been fixed a lot quicker than they were."

- again.. no ones perfect... maybe they shoulda paid u to go up there in dj since u coulda rode the wheel faster..

"The number one thing that stopped me from dancing was when he butchered the bass on his mixes."

- there was no butchering .. that was u just being anal...

"Almost all of the mixes where obvious, me personally, thinks a good mix is one that hard to notice."

- thanks einstein

"If nights like this are getting the rave reviews they do, then R.I.P. trance... I guess the days of old are now over!"

- what in the world do u know of old trance... let it go buddy..

--- TO sum this up here... stop posting like u have a gr 10 education... you really dont kno what you are talkin about.. stop acting like u do... i dont post on here ever.. in fact this is my 3rd post.. yet ive been comin on this board prolly b4 u were born... but listining to morons like u go on about the scene is just rediculas .. in fact its actually funny... do me a favor go get some decks buy urself a couple of ur "old trance tracks" spin a set and toss it on here.. lets all hear wut u got

peace

lofl that was hilarious...but true.
I'd love to see this grand wizard of old skool trance k la whip up a set for us all.
I love this line the best..."The track selection was tolerable, but no where near as good as some of the tracks he layed down in the past" hahaha my god u really don't know ur songs????
Man he dropped bomb after bomb..new, old, remix, etc.. His set flowed beautifully, espically the baselines from track to track. Johan knows exactly how to keep people moving, even the asians were under his spell lol..and thats impressive.

haha RIP trance....spread the word TA's...shows over

Ride to the club, $23
Drinks at the club, $45
Ride home from the club, $23
Talking to Johan about the Trance scene in Canada and Europe, FAWKIN PRICELESS.

A Fanfreakintabulous night at Republik. This was my first time there and i totally had a blast. Dj Celica (Aaron) thankyou so much for hoooking me up with the ticket bro, you r da man.

Got to the club around 11:45ish, there was no line up at that time so i just walked in. The club staff were some really nice people, treated people with respect so props to Republik for having a great team working for them. The funniest thing i ever seen in a club happened last night Loooooooool. The 5 dancers that Republik has came out to get the crowd going i guess as there was no one on the dance floor at that time except for the 2 guys who were too busy lookin at the ceiling. So these dancers get up on the stage (i guess thats what you would call that ramp thing to the Dj booth)and all the guys in club gather around the dance floor just drolling over these chicks specially the Asian doods who were just going nuts over the Asian chick that was dancing. Looking down from the smoking room upstairs it was quite funny as there was a crowd of people gathered around the dance floor, with dance floor being empty itself watching the dancers who were dancing like they were at a cheap stripper club and crowd was gonna start throwing toonies any minute. Hats off to the d00d with the fire and stuff.

As for tunes, well when i walked in it wasn't much to listen to so i figured maybe that it is way too early and it will pick up as the night goes along and i was right. By 12:30 the tunes coming out of the Dj booth were great. I got to hear Josh Gabriel - Alive and at that time i knew i was in for a great night.

Around 1:15ish i saw Johan sitting in the far corner with his buddies so i decided to crash his lil party. Went up to him and said Hi and he just turned around and started talking to me like we had known each other for years. What a down to earth and a real nice fella. Talking to him for about 10 minutes was the highlight of the night for me besides the music he played ofcourse. Some of the tracks i can remember right now were Reflekt - Need to feel loved, Ferry corsten - Cubikated, PVD - For an angel vs Delerium, Tiesto - Love Comes Again, i beleive i also heard just a bit tease of Traffic in his set.Johan, you my friend are one awesome Dj and thank you very much for a fantastic night. I had a blast dancing me arse off. Unfortunately i had to leave around 4am as i had to be at work for 7am.

As for the copy of the set, i do not have it just yet but am working on getting my hands on it. I do however have a great Mix from Johan. Its the best of In sessions from fresh fm if anyone is interested. It does have some of the tunes Johan played last night plus some more wicked tunes such as Liquid love, Darkside of the moon, Jump the next train and etc etc. Pm me if interested.

Oh and by the way k la if your review is based on you standing outside the club as you werent able to afford the cover to get in then my friend you are right. The night did suck ass and there was no sound no bass and nothing at all. But if you were inside the club then d00d lay off the pipe we all know its not doing ya any good.

k la

OK BUDDY 1st of all EAW is one of the best manufacturer's for speaker components in the world I don't know where you are coming from, but everybody knows that; GUV's main room has EAW speaker components installed; the boxes themselves are designed by Steve Dash of Phazon. Apogee is a nice way to go, but there is only one problem, nobody carries them in Toronto, I only know of one person who has the Apogee cabinets, and that would be Carlos from A.C.S., and as far as I remember Carlos is not planning to resell them. Another thing about Apogee is that their bass bins are very easy to blow, you can ask Carlos about it.

2nd of all I'm not to impress with E.V.s over all sound of their tops in other words the cabinets that reproduce the highs and mids; the way that they are built there are way to many highs, and very little mids therefore the sound is very ear piercing. As far as I remember Kool Haus has an E.V. setup. Over all I would say E.V is a good for Live P.A and symphony orchestra reinforcement, but its not ideal for the club setup simply because the sound isnt warm enough.

The Docks, even though they have the Dynacord system and as they say in their press release it is one of the "best" setups in the world, can't touch Republik, the sound doesn't sound crisp, and the bass can't even kick, simply because of two reasons a) Docks is a giant warehouse that lacks acoustics and b) their sound system is not properly tweaked. Boa does have a great sound, but its simply because they were smart purchasing one of the perfect acoustic sounding buildings in Toronto, the club was a movie theatre before, and therefore it was built for acoustics.

Now back to the topic: Republik is one of the best sound systems that I have heard in ages, the sound is perfect, the highs and mids reproduce the crisp and at the same time its warm sound and the subs fill in the rest. Vertex did an awesome job tweaking the P.A., mad respects to those that setup R; if you were at R at the end of the night when Johan was closing you would have heard the full range of the system. REPUBLIK = E.A.W Components + Vertex Setup = PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED SOUND SYSTEM . They got the highs that carry the music, the mids that fill in the sound with warmth and the lows that kick and fills in the rest.
