So, uh, is Discogs really going to come back?

Posted by Bernd_Gradish on Jul-03-2005 09:39:

Hell, I hope so! I really need it for work in the record store. The search engines of many onlinestores/distributors are shit and discogs is almost the best thing to try for infos.
Will be a lot harder to order special stuff for customers for me if there's no Discogs

Posted by xtractorfan on Jul-03-2005 09:49:

Discogs is working for me at the moment but its very slow and looks a bit messed up.

Posted by klappa on Jul-03-2005 10:26:

i talked with one of the moderators he says the site was hacked but nothing was deleted and it's gonna take some time to make it look like normal.

Posted by sbastien4678 on Jul-03-2005 13:31:

yeah back up but very slow..

Posted by Cobalt on Jul-04-2005 04:12:

Yay, Discogs is back to its old self!

All hail the mighty Discogs!

Posted by klappa on Jul-04-2005 08:21:

just some hours ago it
was fast as ever before but now it's soooooo damn slow again, it's getting on my nerves. he's better fix it now or else i wont pay for premiership

Posted by Simcut on Jul-04-2005 11:46:

^ dont want to start a flame war but what a fucking arsehole ^^^^^ :|

YOU GUYS ARE SO FUCKING LUCKY SOMETHING LIKE DISCOGS EXIST, IT HAS SERVER TROUBLES FOR A FEW DAYS AND YOU THREATEN THE EARTH ETC. FUCKING PATHETIC.

:-/

why do people insist on being such dickheads...the amount of time and effort people put in to make Discogs what it is and you have some dickwads ike the guy above.....and a few others.

Posted by Steve Stephano on Jul-04-2005 11:54:

Well said! Discogs is a free service for our benefit, people should be more grateful for the time devoted in managing such a database.

No need to get bitchy yourself. Personally I feel it's your responsibility to keep the site up all the time at least for those who pay for it.

And the biggest effort is after all from the contributors.

I'm sorry but entries dont get in themselves, mods and editors make a huge effort too, and not forgetting the guy that runs it all and hosts it...

I have every right to get bitchy about it, when some cock threatens not to pay membership cause of a temporary problem for a few days, where as 99.9% of the rest of the time it runs fine.... fucking annoying.

I can see your point, but still when people don't get what they pay for, at least they should get a discount compensating them for the downtime. I'm not saying that the owner or the mods are doing a bad job, but that's what the paying users are entitled to.

Posted by Simcut on Jul-04-2005 13:33:

Talking

rofl, you crack me up, every subscription service has downtime, do you see them refunding too? no.

Posted by klappa on Jul-04-2005 14:40:

i hope he better fix it. it seems the site is down but it's better that way than being arse slow. and unlike some like you simcut there are ones like me that can't live without it and i made up my mind now for paying premiership since it's only costing 120 for 12months

Posted by tiesto14 on Jul-06-2005 18:06:

anyone know how long Discogs will be messed up for?

Speed is not even worth visiting the site...too slow.

Message from Discogs tech support:

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the support, still limping along here running on one tempremental web server, the other one is down and out.

This is the technical reasons for the problems:

----

Three problems happened all at the same time.

1) Our SSH gateway server has a hardware problem which prevented us from getting into the other servers. That server is back up for now. We realize this is a single point of failure for getting into the servers and are working on getting a second SSH gateway set up.

2) We use a program called "monit" to supervise the apache process and restart it when it dies (which happens frequently because of high traffic). On the first webserver monit's logfile reached linux's 2gig file limit so it could not run anymore. And because of problem #1 we couldn't get in to diagnose the problem and remove that logfile. We didn't realize that monit's logfile could get so big and will now be compressing it or deleting it on a regular basis.

3) The second webserver has a hardware problem and we are working to get it replaced.

So for now we are running on only one webserver and that is why the site is slow. We have 4 new webservers and some additional hardware on order and all of it will be installed in mid-to-late July. Will also make a few changes to the network setup so that in the future we can prevent or at least handle problems like this faster.

----

It may be another week before full system functionality returns to Discogs... this is the lull before the storm of having 4 brand new webservers and yet more improvements to the site!

Nik

Thanks.

Is there a way to donate to discogs through paypal? I want to help a little bit by donating a bit of cash.

Posted by ScuL on Jul-07-2005 11:09:

You can do it on the site. I'm a registered subscriber. Believe it costs 12 per year. Not that much
