and this is why i live at home with ma and pa while going to school....haha... i have my setup in this recreation room with a soon to be custom made dj table.... the best part: i can play out full blast at 3am when my parents are sleeping and they can't hear a thing



i live in the boonies so i have no neighbors to disturb unless i had a night club system or something

and all my gear is relativly safe in an alarmed house complete with a guard dog...

all of this = peace of mind

That's what i'm doing as well, but honestly, it can really suck living at home. That's why i'm both anxious and nervous at the same time. I know i can't bring most of my stuff, but also i'll miss the things i can't bring. It's a sacrifice i'll need to make.

iv been reading this tread for a while, and its a good topic...
am starting university in the fall, but its only 30 minutes from me mums house, and the school im going to dosnt really have any on campus housing since its a small private school, so im staying at home with me mum... but point being ic never really had to worry about people stealing my stuff here, because i dont talk to people in the neighborhood, so they dont know i have it, but i never thought ya roomies would take yourshit and pawn it or whatever...

but for the future ill really keep that in mind when i plan on moving out

but jokes aside i'm seriously thinking of getting SSL or FS2 and not buy any cd players (cdj800 was what i had in mind). Less space issues and it does the same damn thing!

thats what I just did, I ordered mine from djmart.com for 492 shipped
for some reason it didn't have the screws to keep the cover on (for the main console) but I emailed tony and he's going to get rane to send me some

You bought the SSL i assume... Well how does it handle, you have any problems with it, anything it is lacking etc. A review of that thing would be much appreciated

P.S Does you laptop soundcard have two inputs? or are you using one of those rca twoOUT-oneIN cables etc. Do you recommend i get an external sound card for my laptop... questions, questions!

my laptop has yet to arrive, so I have it connected to my PC right now, and for my speakers I'm using computer ones for now (logitech z560)

and SSL connects purely through USB, all sound is sent through usb. so you don't really need a good soundcard

SSL was easy to set up, literally took about 5 minutes. everything works great, I've yet to sort songs into bins because I only have everything set up temporarily until my laptop arrives

I bought my dj equipment while at my first year in school. So I got to know my roomate really well. There were 5 djs in my dorm (only one spun energy and the rest hip hop). Then in the other freshman dorm there were 4 others and all of them spun electronica. There was this really hot freshman female dj from hawaii that lived in a sophmore dorm. My freshman class had roughly 10 djs and only 2 had their equipment at school. I had to set my equipment battle style in order for the 2 turnatbles and mixer to fit. My monitor was on top of a dest drawer and was a pain in the ass to look at because it was stuffed in the corner. I had to type with the keyboard in my lap while starring at this huge crt monitor so i could have gotten work done. Having a set-up in my room was fun though and attracted lots of attention, both good and bad. But, never did i ever have a problem with theft or anything, although idiots would constantly want to use my stuff. Also dorm rooms are really dusty or at least mine was so that wasn't too good for the vinyl either.

i would NEVER bring my setup to my dorm room, too much $$ to risk

That's really sweet spdandpwr, I really hope the people i'll deal with would be as cool as the people in your dorm.

I'm still afraid b/c over the past 3years i've been working full time and living at home, so i more or less spent a huge chunk on my stuff which i will want to bring with me, like my gaming/recording pc, laptop, lcd monitor, dj equipment, records, ssl, studio monitors, etc. Also, since i'm going to a very strict Christian school, I'm sorta doubt there will be many djs and i'm sure many will complain about my "secular" music.

BTW, what do you guys think about coffins for dorms? They can probably act as a table and usually are pretty heavy so it's makes theft somewhat harder. I currently own a couple of odyssey flight cases and i'm sorta considering selling those so i can get a coffin.

my school was a private catholic school in san francisco and i didn't have much complaints about volume...i had a klipsch 2.1 system that had a max spl of 105 db and i would crank it up like non other. I don't think weight has anything to do with it because if someone wants to steal something theyll do whatever it takes i had people get their locks picked and stuff stolen from their rooms, in fact i was surprised that nobody stole my stuff since there was a lot of theft going on at my school. By the way, most people dont' steal stuff like dj equipment for one good reason, its too big to hide. If you enter and exit someones room with nothing in your hands nobody will suspect anything and if you stole a dvd someone may think your borrowing it but nobody loans out dj equipment. Unless you are lugging it around campus like me in order to dj events.

i learned to mix in my headphones only becuase of all the dorm rules. luckily i was in a hall full of football players so they would play really loud music... and i definitly reciprocated every once in a while without feeling bad. i had quite a speaker system for a dormroom so i tried to be considerate.

most people dont study in their rooms anyway so unless someone is trying to sleep, noone really minds alittle noise. most people went out during weekends so friday or saturday nights i had no problem cranking up the music since noone was really around.

every once in a while some friends would ask me to spin a party. its funny becuase dormroom walls are thin as it is... people said they could hear the music from the elevator from 4-5 floors down haha

u go to USF??? i almost went there just because it was a 30 minute bus ride for me...and wasn't that bad of a school.

but i personally wouldnt bring my set-up to the dorms...its just that much more your gonna have to deal with. i'd just wait till you move out into an apartment where there are no lights out, and you can spin whenever the fook you want

yeah i used to now i have to transfer since my sister is having her wedding in feburary and take a plane bakc and forth is a huge hassle. USF had in house djs meaning if you decided to get in contact with the radio station there (there are two) you can use their equipment and dj events with them. Its a great way to see if djing is worth it especially since youll have a live crowd with all your events plus radio listeners

btw quiet hours in my school are from 8am-12pm on the weekends which is plenty of time to blast music and the kids i went to school with on my floor loved trance music. Lots of kids on my floor would go to raves on a monthly basis.

i'm about to go off and transfer and live in a dorm. Now I absolutely know 100% sure that i'm not going to bring my decks in there.

I did, just a mixer and two cd players. Hooked into my computer for sound. no amp. just small thing. Have the full setup now in the room im renting
