anyone here that knows me well knows i'm not paranoid at all and i'm prally one of the chillest TAs out there..but hey, if "paranoia paranoia paranoia!!" is the way a 30 year old man (btw, your posts here Truly belie your age, Sir) decides to criticize me as his defense towards his own innane argument of "earplugs are retarded", than that's cool with me

i honestly dont care what you do but i Do feel it's my job to spread what knowledge i have on issues so as to make others aware of symptoms/causes/consequences so that perhaps they can make a more educated decision...and i am certainly here to reube (and take pride in rebuking) statements or opinions that lack any substance of any type...one thing is if you have an educated opinion and you know what you're talking about (ie, Not just "earplugs are retarded"), then that's cool... but once again, your decision really doesn't affect me. i just like to make sure you know the facts.

edit: let's ask kidnyce for example: brian, have i ever said one thing about drugs being bad for you? no, that's not an issue bc you are a smart, hardworking man and you know what you're doing- and you know well (ie, everything in moderation). brian, how many times have you heard me preach about the "evils" of drugs or alcohol or meat or no sleep or something like that? Pretty sure it's zero, right?

Im thinking of getting a pair of the custom earplugs, but cant they fall out easily? Do you guys who have them have that problem at all? Id hate to spend all that money just to lose them easily. I use foam ones, but sometimes they dont make the music sound the greatest.

Posted by kelly923 on Jul-14-2005 22:17:

def wear earplugs if u can... as an audiology major i've seen first hand the damage noise can cause... it's irreversible and cummulative... i however cannot stand earplugs, i think they are incredibly annoying... i once had to do a project and wear earplugs (to simulate a hearing loss) for a day and after an hour i had to take them out... but don't worry, for those of u that don't plug, technological advances didn't miss hearing aid industry... the new digital ones are incredible

Unless you are a DJ, work in a club or go to clubs every single night of the week then i really dont think anyone has a thing to worry about....there are far worse things in life that will harm you in far worse ways then not wearing earplugs in a club. How come you dont preach about those? Second hand smoke is more harmful then not wearing earplugs...yet do u wear a mask in a club? (before smoking ban)

not meaning to attack anyone, but this is a very valid subject to all who go clubbing. below is just for your information:

What are the symptoms of NIHL? (Noise-Induced Hearing Loss)

The symptoms of NIHL increase gradually over a period of continuous exposure. Sounds may become distorted or muffled, and it may be difficult for the person to understand speech. The individual may not be aware of the loss, but it can be detected with a hearing test.

It is near-impossible to gauge how much damage noise can have on ears, except that it does damage and is permanent. It's pretty much a matter of how much damage you can prevent. You might think you suffered none, but chances are your hearing is already damaged to some extent. You may not care, but that doesn't mean others shouldn't. I smoke, cuz i dun care about my lungs...but I'm in the field of acoustics and therefore hearing is my priority. To each their own...

Personal experience: I played violin for 12 years (unprofessionally), and due to my left ear being closer, my hearing in my left ear is noticeably weaker then my right ear.

It's a good idea to get earplugs, or to take a break whenever you are in the club and leave the dancefloor. That's what my smoke breaks were for...out into the cold dark stairwell outside Roxy on those pvd 6 hour sets.

I have had no trouble with mine, and I've been using them for about a year now. I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem either.
Sure they tend to move out of your ears slightly when you're dancing and sweating, just push them back in occasionally to keep them tightly inside your ears. Because of their shape (a tight fit to your ear canals, pointing backwards inside your ear) and material, it's pretty hard (maybe even impossible) for them to just fall out.

I made a little experiment just now to prove this point :D
I took a plug out so that it was only barely inside my ear, blocking almost no sound. I then shaked my head like crazy and jumped around. And the plug showed no signs of moving anywhere :)

From a biological point of view, exposing your ears to incredibly high decibels of sound damages the cilia in your ear, which causes you to go deaf, and this cilia does not grow back.

not trying to be a bitch, but it just annoys me when people say things when they don't know what they are talking about... there aren't any "cilia" in your ears... there are inner and outer haircells (located in the cochlea), which die when exposed to high levels of sound... high frequencies being more susceptible to damage

Not trying to be a dick, but it just annoys me when people say things when they don't know what they are talking about... high frequencies are not susceptible to damage. High decibels are what damages. Decibels and frequency are two different things. In fact, if you want to use frequency as your argument, you should of said "low" frequencies damage hearing. That's why BASS damages your ears, while TREBLE is just simply annoying. Example: think of a dog whistle. It functions at an extremely high frequency, but it doesn't affect humans. Clear?
