Well excuse me Mr. "I'm ultra anal about what goes into my ears because I'm a music whore", but I just happen to be happy with my ipod and im sure other music whores such as myself are too...and of course with an ipod you dont need to input jack shit...just press the button that says "podcast" on and there...LIVESET DONE SIMPLE!!! thank you...youre welcome...

Yes, I'm very selective about what goes in my ear and Yes, I do need to customize my music.

You'r comments are too harsh on a personal level, when you dont even personally know who you are talkin' to. But its awright, suite yourself. Have a good one.

haha Dude...you funny!

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Jul-21-2005 20:01:

nah i dont need no specs - i'm not really for the whole buy a built computer idea, i'm biased cuz i think they skimp on necessary parts but then again your buying a gaming machine like alienware, still think they skimp on the branding. as for building a machine, you can as specific as you want - even with cabling. Now I'm not no open cased neon junkie, fear not my black tower reigns supreme to many machines

Zephyr Workstation
Silverstone Temjin Windtunnel FULL ATX
Thermaltake 450W Powersupply + P4 Power Extension (hard to find cable)
2 Seagate 80GIG SATA Drives (os drives)
1 Western Digital IDE 200GIG Scratch
OCZ Low Latency 1GIG (512x2) PC3500 Ram
Creative Labs Audigy 2Zs Platnium Pro
AIW 9800 PRO
ABIT AI7 800MB FSB Dual Channel Memory ICH5+R
Intel P4 3.0e Prescott Ready (dope ass chip)
Silverstone Edumon Temperature Display

Essential Fileserver
Coolermaster Mid ATX
Thermaltake 450W Powersupply
Western Digital IDE 300GIG
OCZ 1GIG (512x2) PC3200
Voodoo 3 Video Card
ASUS A8N 800MB FSB Dual Channel Memory ICH5+R
AMD Athalon XP 2800+

My Workstation and Fileserver are full networked over Cat5e

Building a media station "Shuttle" AMD box to handle shared media from my file server (networked cat5e)

I'm planning on running KRK RP8 or RP5 studio monitors off my workstation. And a 8.1 surround sound home theater system off my entertainment center. My entertainment center will comprise of

1 Sony STRDA1000ES receiver
2 Sony Satellite Speakers
2 AiWA Floor standing Speakers
1 AiWA Center Channel
2 Sony Mid Bookshelf
2 JBL Rear Speakers
PS2, XBOX, Digital Cable, and Shuttle Media Box
Monster Cable to the Floor Standing
14Gauge to Satellites and Mid/Rear speakers

My last piece to this puzzle is probably a sub, I haven't figured out what sub I want to get, but I'll research it.

Oh yea what's the spec on that a-ware, I'm interested to know, and also what do you use it for? Like all that shit I have up there I wouldn't just collect if i wasn't using that shit. lols i work in MIS so I'm on the computer 25x8x366 so i'm pretty much tied to some sort of communication device....

Posted by Sumit_A on Jul-21-2005 20:26:

Wow...You got some Killer H/W there...Niiceee!

The reason I went for Alienware was:

A> I needed a Extreme Machine (which is portable), Desktop Replacement.

B> I wanted to be able to customize it from scratch

So here's my Config:

>Pentium 4 670 Desktop Processor w/ HT Technology 3.8GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache
>17" WideSXGA+ 1680 x 1050 LCD Clearview Display with Built-in Camera
>2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 2 x 1024MB
>NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra with 256MB of DDR3 memory
>100GB 5400 RPM Serial ATA x 2 RAID 0 (I Disabled the RAID, so now I got 2x100GB)
>2X 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW / 24X CD-RW Combo w/Software (Yes 2 DVD Burners)
>Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA (7.1 Optical)
>Integrated 10/1000Mb Gigabit Ethernet & 56K V.92 Modem
>Internal Wireless 802.11b/g miniPCI Card
>Belkin Bluetooth PCMCIA Type II Adapter
>10 in 1 Card reader Built-in and firewire etc etc.

This Damn thing is in a Lap-top form factor and weighs around 12-14 pounds.

External-250Gig USB HDD.

Coming soon:

2xStudio Monitors (yet to re-search and decide)
2xCDJ-1000'S MK2's(Replacing my DN-2600's)
2xTech MK5G's (Replacing my Gemini PT-2000's, very old)
1xDJM 600 (Replacing my Gemini 676 Pro II)

Pro Keyboards (yet to decide) Korg/yamaha

Surprisingly I'm not a gamer. Its just an extreme machine that I bought coz soon I'll be getting into production and needed a all-in one box....Music being the key application. Editing/Production etc etc.

You said you are into MIS?? Information Security??

A few days ago, I updated my computer with the latest window xp critical update. After that, I notice something isn't right. My computer seem to running a little slower, especially, when I loaded up winamp and when I tried to load up Adobe Audition at the sametime, my music thats playing on the winamp will skip. Not only that, sometimes when I am copying and pasting files to another folder, my computer would freeze. Now, I tried defragment my harddrive, I ran Microsoft Anti-Spyware program. I ran AVG virus scan. I pretty did alot of trial and error.

Here is my PC specs

Athlon 2600 2.08 GHZ
512 3500 DDR Ram
Asus A7V8X-X Motherboard.
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Graphic Card
IBM EIDE 120 Gigs HD

please help! Thanks alot.

what happen is after you install SP2 , microsoft closed alot of the ports in this update, its possible that made it slower , I will send you the link or filename once i get home. your speed decreased when you are doing multiple task online ?

Closing ports dont make any PC slower!!!! If anything closing ports will result in better security and faster performance as less services will be listenin on active ports. BAAAHHH!

Yes they have included tons of security patches that may have affected the performance, but to me the symptoms are more like corrupted files/Corrupted registry.

Clean install....Case closed.

here is the link you can try this patch

actually, I am just trying to open up some programs offline, and it does the samething. Okay, 24 hours later, Now there is a new update icon, I believe its critical update icon. I am going to install this update, and we'll go from there.

As for Norton Ghost, I just brought a 120gigs eide HD. Can Ghost copy everything from my c:\ including my settings into a image and paste to this new hd of mine, and then I format my C:\, install XP Professional edition, and then I put the image back to C:\. Can this work?

clean install is the best way to clear problems and better than buying a complete new pc if the problem is not major. I do it like once every 6 months.

Posted by limin_li on Jul-22-2005 02:47:

yujie, the problem is that my dad also use this pc, and he has virtual pc loaded on here. Furthermore, he does access to his company with this PC.

Norton Ghost is NOT for Data Backup. Its to image your LIVE OS (Windows XP) with all the software and drivers installed. It basically makes a .gho file image of yr entire C:. So the next time your HDD crashes or yr OS goes corrupt, you just pop in the Ghost CD, the system boots from there and then restores yr entire OS with yr applications and drivers and settings and all. Yr data, Videos, doc and mp3's etc etc can be backed up on other HDD or DVD or whatever. But this basically makes an image of a LIVE OS, Which is incredible. Restores the entire system in like 7 minutes.

You actually do a clean install every 6 months?? Thats crazy...I do it like....never!!! Thats the last option......thats is if the OS goes corrupt, and the Windows XP installer wont repair it, the Command mode restoration wont restore it, the upgrade wont help and all my .gho files deny to restore my OS, Highly impossible. Its only then that I'll do a clean install......thats a nightmare.

Yea, crazy indeed. Only do that as a last option.

Are u sure u dont have the IBM Deathstar harddrive? I heard its not that reliable as the others. Or you can try to clone the HD on a same size HD as yours and see if it works or not

i seriously do this monthly. windows is such a piece of shit programming. i have it on my laptop so i have to image it monthly to keep it fresh because windows just decides to eat itself the longer its alive. excluding viruses and spy where which i don't get anyway. but it still sucks.

want to solve your problems? buy a mac.
want to really solve your problems and be real secure? run linux. i switched to linux 2 years ago for my desktop and i'd never even consider going back. so much lighter, so much more control and so much faster. go download ubuntu it will probably be best for you http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.04/

i've been running a gentoo file server thats my desktop with 2 monitors thats going to be upgraded to an AMD64 system soon =) i'd like to get a dual core cpu but its way too much money right now

Every month? Just as bad

Posted by limin_li on Jul-25-2005 05:44:

hey guys, thanks for all your help.

The problem is kind of hard to explain. However, I already have a solution. My friend and I installed Magic Partition on this harddrive, and we installed win xp and the lagging and crashing problem is gone. So what is going to happen is that, well since I already have a 120gigs hd on the way, I am going to install win xp on that hd. So my dad and I will not fight over the formatting hd and starting from scratch all over again. My friend told me that, use Norton Ghost when I have everything is set. This way if I fucked up, I can just go back to that image file and start over again.

it helps that my thinkpad literatly has an image button on it =)

resolution to PC problems = Apple?
Apple uses intel chips FYI. But they do have the logic - let's build a fast booting OS and give up stability so incase the OS crashes, we can reboot real quickly. Sorry I just find that funny for some reason

Linux - ok lets see how many people are actually able to run litestep on their winbox before asking them to shell out a linux box. Let alone windowsblinds or script any other "shell" gui. not many here comfortable doing so. As for the stability of linux or *nix even, i think as a core OS its efficient, but its not something "user friendly". meaning to market linux like windows will take a whole generation switch. It's like moving from a pc to a mac. Not many people are comfortable doing so.

Summit_A
Studio Monitors - Look into KRK Rokit Series, that's what I'm looking to buy. You'll be spending about $3-400 but you'll get a nice defined sound.

MIS refers to Management in Information Systems (i'm going for an MBA in marketing to achieve a Director of Sales Operations and Information Systems title). Essentially I develop/implement/test and validate all computerized systems and workflow. The MBA will allow me to highlight efficiency according to a metric which will ultimately be an accomplishment. It's like applying six sigma of business to time reduction in production and sales operation environments. It uses BI (business intelligence) with hands on technical skills. I do anything from Oracle 11i/9i/10g Discoverer Programming to freehand coding HTML to scripting appletalk SCP/ TCP IP protocols for file retrievals. I even work with XML and RSS for data feeds to online vendors like Amazon, B&N, Google. I work for a fortune 500 publishing company (mcgraw-hill companies). I straddle the Business Unit and Sales Division. So I'm close to the revenue line, but no responsible for generating revenue. Responsible for predicting market trends based on buying patterns and point of sale data. shit now that i think about it, i handle about 180million in business, 100million in forecasted business, and the whole divisions orderfulfillment process.

Anyways, back on topic - computers in general are great since a machine can do all the calculations and automated processes for you. Imagine being able to control your crib from your cell phone? You call your house, enter a few numbers, get home with the AC on and a cool apartment. TV/DV-R set to record the pay-per-view tyson fight that your illegal cable box is letting you get. Setup downloads to occur during the late mornings when there is least traffic and more bandwidth for you to move files. It's a great technology and soon will replace alot of human intervention at a more precise and efficient work flow.

I'm sure Lim has resolved the issue by now. Summit - get rid of that a-ware box man and build your own. how much did you pay for that if you don't mind me asking?

dude that things more of a heat plate then a laptop. i don't think it will actually last you that long unless alienware did a really nice job with the airflow design. they usually do with their desktops but its a laptop so i dunno.
