Re: Your MOM uses Ableton!

Chad (mmmmmmmMindShifter!) and I are posting a joint-review of this mix, Clov. We listened to the whole thing together and this is what we came up with.

- Good track selection. Youve got some great tracks in here.

- Something is off with the first mix. Key or something, I dont know. It just sounded off.

- Dont f-ck around with tracks when theyre at their peak (that was mostly Chads comment because he likes the Max G track the way it is ).

- Mix between Max G and Pole Folder is really abrupt, but we came up with excuses as to why that would be, so we cut you some slack.

- Pole Folder is hott. (My comment.)

- Pole Folder/Coburn mix levels are off but other than that I thought it was a good mix.

- Chad loves Britney. No no no. Chad loves this track. (I still think that Chad just loves Britney. ) But we arent digging the tran. into this track. I think its because I went from wanting to put my head on my desk to wanting to get up and dance in less than one minute. Chads spoiled because hes heard way better mixes into it. Take from that what you will, because I dont think we have anything solid to say about it.

- Chad doesnt like the mix out of Britney (although he says he can see the logic in combining the two) and we had a little argument about minor things and I might have blocked him on AIM at one point but I think everything is ok now. (At first I thought it was funky and then I was like, no this is clashing and now I just dont know what to think.)

- Holy shit Unit 4 -> Infusion! You get the award for fastest transition EVER. You got some 'splaining to do.

Reading back over this we sound really critical but we generally liked it we promise!

yep tis true, we went over it whilst drinking (or was that just me?)

basically what ang put down is what we discussed at the time, and yes there were several, "back up to this point (insert rando time) and listen, do you hear (insert rando comment)" etc.

while i love the closer by itself, i just dont think it jives w/ the whole mix.

and btw if this is too harsh, i apologize, but you wanted feedback, i've known other peeps that have asked for feedback and then freaked when i said things, as jason can attest, i have a very critical ear.

however in the end, i say keep going, get a mixer it will help out a lot, and in the end (did i just say that twice ) play what you think sounds the best, coz in the end (fuck gotta stop syain that) thats all that matters

lookin forward to the next mix

*edit* and its true i dl'd the mix only for does she know yet. that track is fuckin stellar, can anywone say sander fokused set 2k4? christ, what i wouldnt give to hear that song live on a huge system off my fuckin tits*

Nice feedback Ang...Chad can go fuck himself tho.

j/k

Yeah...I know alot of the levels are off...since I dont have a mixer and EQing with teh mouse sucks lol

From Unit 4 -> Infusion...I just like dropping Infusion in like that...I think thats the best way to mix into it.

Other than that...fair points...thanks! Glad you guys liked it.

Yes, Ableton is fairly straight forward to learn. There are loads of tutorials out there on the web, including at the Ableton site.

A lot of DJs use Macs because they are more user friendly, but the main reason is that two popular sequencing programs (Logic and Digital Performer) are now only made for Mac, therefore a lot of people are making the switch. Digital Performer has been Mac only, but Logic switched from PC/Mac to just Mac a couple of years ago, and is now a part of Apple, which means that alot more people are going to go Mac in the future imo.

You can buy it directly from the Ableton website. Students might be able to get it for the education price, which would presumably be a lot cheaper than the $499 regular price.

I think the BIGGEST reason for them using a mac, is simply because no matter what, a Mac is just more stable than a Windows based laptop. If you're playing a live gig you just cannot afford to have Live or the system crash. I've heard Sasha say that even if Live locks up while he's playing, he can open another instance of live and mix in a new track and then force shutdown the locked up one.

Just last night I was working on a mix and Live locked up and crashed on my PC
