dude. all depends on the style of the music.
i know some guitarists that don't shread at all, but their technique is still flawless. they can pick up any guitar and make it sound like a million bucks. i'd like to see malnsteen pick up a squier and lay down a bitchin heavy rock riff.
nuh huh, not gunna happen.
there is a lot more to geing an awesome guitarist than being able to play a bajillion notes a second in the key of blah.
in my opinion, and mind you, i own and operate a recording studio for a living, malmsteen is only where he is cuz he can shred like a cheese grater. i know more guitarists than i can count that could kick his ass in terms of rock-solid technique and what they can actually do with a guitar.
how can you miss Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson ???

Satriani is the godfather. Steve Vai was one of his first students, aswell as Kirk Hammett. I love (alot of) his music and think he is one of the most creative guitarists, and Steve Vai is probably up there in the top 5 technical guitarists, I don't think either of them are the best (although Vai is way up there imo).
Malmsteen is a one trick pony. He can play incredibly fast I'll give him that, but his style becomes tedious and uninteresting the more you listen.
John Petrucci is one of my personal favourites (Rock Discipline DVD pwnz). One of my personal favourites has to be Alexi Laiho from Bodom. Just because of the fucking riffs he churns out. Incredible.
My top three:
1. Jason Becker (omg!)
2. Alexi Laiho
3. John Petrucci

I've had this track for ages, but never really listened to it...definatly one of the more experimental songs he's done, sounds almost goa'ish at the beginning.

slash is pretty awesome. and there is, of course, jimi hendrix. Can't get much better!
I have to disagree with Yngwie. He was technically awesome, now, it's all pretty much the same.
Joe Satriani, even though he's my fav guitarrist, I wouldn't vote for him either.
Petrucci is incredible, but no.
My vote goes to Steve Vai, imo he has done way more for the development of guitar playing than anyone else. I think he's the Hendrix of the 'New Age' if you want to call him that.
I wouldn't say there is one guitarrist that is THE best, since not every guitarrist plays the same style. I bet Yngwie wouldn't be able to play classical guitar, same with Vai, Satch...or Paco de Lucia Rock, etc.
Classic Rock: Hendrix (even though I don't like him)
Rock: Steve Vai
Flamenco: Paco de Lucia
Classical: Narciso Yepes
Jazz: no idea
It seems like the same predictable names are coming up alot (Vai, Satch etc), but I think there are so many incredible guitarists that most people have never heard of.
Jason Becker and Marty Friedman who former the band Cacophony were both incredible as a due and single. The harmonies were amazing, but just the way they complimented eachother was incredible.
Try and get hold of a song by 'Richie Kotzen' called 'A lighter shade of plaid'. He's definatly mastered his own style. At the beginning he does a great effect with the volume while playing a clean riff, it sounds so sweet.
Other people I respect as guitarists (other than the usual) are Steve Morse, Eric Moore, Paul Gilbert and Alexi Laiho. Ok, they aren't the most technical guitarists that ever lived, I will agree with the Vai suggestions for that.

I really like Daron Malakian from System of a Down. This guy could really play.
Tom Morello - ratm, audioslave
Handsdown the most amazing guitarist ive ever heard. He can pull sound out of that thing like no one else.
