Yeah well most don't. Basically most of what R&B and Hip Hop producers do is sit around all day looking through old Luther Vandross, Prince, Marving Gaye, Kool & The Gang records, or even foreign movie soundtracks, to find a kickass sample to put over a standard breakbeat. I think it was in the movie scratch or a similar movie(like jay-z's documentary which i've seen some of) where a guy said "It might take days or weeks to find a sample, but when you find the right one for a track it makes everything worthwile." or something. I was like man, good for you, I could do your job if I had 20,000 70's records and a lot of time too. Or maybe it's different with "underground" hiphop, is that what you're trying to say?

Allot of producers are like that; they find records, sample them and make a track. But some are genuinely talented musicians like the UNKLE boys and DJ Shadow and alike.

oh my - the ignorance in this thread is almost unreal.

I'm surprised you're surprised that Missy Elliot produced this. Shes one of the few hip hop artists thats actually talented, especially when it comes to the studio.

Missy's entire album "The Cookbook" which features this song is pretty good. It's not your typical commercial rap/hip-hop sound. Timbaland and The Neptunes produced a few of the tracks, and I consider them to be some of the best producers.

do you guys know of any "hiphop" except what MTV feeds you with? saying that timbaland and the neptunes are the best producers is like saying the best trance producers are tiesto, armin and pvd.
you people need to check out the real hiphop.

Scumfrog's remix is nice.

ummm misinformed much? it's a sample, i.e. the entire basis of the beats behind the hip hop genre. -> hip hop didn just appear, it got created, by takin from elsewhere.

whoa... generalise much? thats like sayin all trance producers do is take one standard intro-build up-beat-build up-outro formula and apply to all tracks..

ok so you want some 'different' hip hop? producers/artists of high recommendation = prince paul, dan the automator, deltron, de la soul, atmosphere, mos'def, handsome boy modelling school. go grab a album, and listen from start to finsh, then come tell me all hip hop follows the same "rip off a 70's sample" formula.

Does anyone else think this is a good song? I think it's remarkably well produced, and I was shocked to learn that Missy Eliot herself was behind it. The bass is pitch perfect, some of the vocal effects are interesting and the overall effect of the song is top-notch. The lyrics may be wanting a bit, but for the atmosphere it's suited for, theyre perfect. I really appreciate her studio abilities after hearing this song.
wow...never ever mention missy elliots name in here again ever!!!!

I'm not talking about where hip hop came from, i'm talking about Missy Elliott - Losing Control. You know, it's a song that samples nearly the entirety of a track made in 1983, but which people like you think Missy Elliott is a genius for "producing" in 2005. [austin powers]I mean seriously people[/austin powers], I wasn't talking about ripping off the breakbeats from Clear, even though the drum programming wasn't even changed for Losing Control. Losing Control didn't just appear, it got created by taking from another track made 22 years ago, and that's the entire point. Do you understand yet? I don't think I can explain it any better than this.

1. YOU misinformed much?
2. That is what all trance producers do.

I didn't say all hip hop, I said most hip hop. Nearly all or probably all radio mtv popular hip hop. And that's the majority of it.
