chelsea and liverpool are in the same group because uefa didnt have contingencies to allow the holders to be let back into the cl if they were outside their nations uefa coefficients. because they had to qualify through the preliminary rounds, it was very possible they would have been drawn with arsenal or chelsea. wouldve been completely different if liverpool finished 4th

it's not hard to believe in conspiracies when it concerns England or English teams in European competitions.

in the draw of the CL teams of the same country can't be drawn into the same group. But this is a special case: because Liverpool, as holder of the CL, isn't considered a representative of England they can be drawn into a group with an other English team.

Because Chelsea was the only English team that wasn't in the first coefficient pot, they were the only english team that could end up with liverpool.
