-- Why are Asians doing so well?

We all know when someone calls someone an Asian they mean the eastern portions of the continent. Just like if someone says "that American" we can all agree that they are refering to a United States citizen. While it might be wrong, it's just the way it is.

Several reasons:

1. China as an example had a massive bureaucracy very early, with official positions in the government (the main and respectable path to fine living) being through the official examinations of the Chinese Classical texts. This encouraged literacy, and study, which was instituitonalized as a primary virtue in e.g., Confucianism, the state philosophy for 2000+ years.

2. China is still very poor. Study, due to practical reasons, is considered a luxury. Therefore everyone's goal is to study very hard with the time they do have, because those that do well are permitted to attend high schools and universities, and those that don't go to work in the textile factory. In short, studying hard leads to a better life for one's entire family in contemporary China (as in ancient China; moreover it is not unusual for three generations to live together as a family unit): you either make it and get a higher education, which leads to your entry to the middle class, or you fail and live in poverty for the rest of your life. The motivation to study hard and do hard work is therefore very powerful.

And there is no East Asian society that was not heavily influenced by China.

Awesome and informative!

I'm already aware of that. The reason why I asked was because many Indians and Pakistanis are also doing very well. Asia's a big place; Chinese, Japanese and Koreans aren't the only Asians.

And as Q5echo mentioned, good work ethic (I prefer to call it hard work) is one reason, but an equally important reason IMO is parenting (obviously in combination with work ethic). Asian parents are far more assertive in disciplining their kids too than most other cultures I've come across/am familiar with. Many eastern cultures (pretty much all of Asia, i.e. everything east of Europe) is like that. But "Asians" parents seem to be more assertive.

I definently agree about parenting. Groups that tend to do the worst in the U.S. tend to be ones that have broken families.

this is going to sound really bad and kind of arrogant since i m Asian.

Students in Asian Countries (the developed ones) do better than all the other countries on tests in math/science reasoning etc..

but really its becasue most Asian parents pressure their kids.

here's a book that might help

Contrary to what the public may believe, Asian students are no more intellectually gifted than non-Asian students. The reason that Asian students outperform their peers in the classroom has nothing to do with how they are born and everything to do with how they are raised.

honestly, I don't think I want to raise my kid (if ever) the way my mom raised me even though I think I turned out ok.

Jeesh... I am refering to Asian-Americans, and more specifically how they have proven (yes as in statistically) to be a successful minority in the U.S. economically.

I believe with African American... a lot of them are in a system of Poverty in the United States. Once your in the projects and in the welfare system... it's almost impossible to get out of it with the current system of economics we have in the United States.

With Asians... I believe a lot of them were immigrants or refugees. Immigrants need money to get out of Asia.. thus when they come, they have some type of money already. And refugess for example, from Vietnam were probably given more help and assistance then most of the low income in the United States, which are mostly African Americans.

I'm sure there's many other factors.. but I think those are the main ones.

I also contribute to stability of the family unit. While divorce affects all walks of life, black populations are hit harder.

Walter E. Williams (Prof of Economics) on black minorities

Here is a picture of him as well:

He says the lack of a familiy unit and the rise of illegitmacy affects blacks today. Asians, Hispanics and whites tend to have a stronger family life.
