The cover is Alex Grey's, so I'm not ruling it out, but the tracklist reeks of phoniness [why I didn't include it]. Personally, I just doubt they'd mess around with it this close to when it's supposed to be out, but you never know.

"Vicarious" in four days. CLICK ME *drools*

Posted by The_One on Apr-15-2006 03:57:

Well its official the single "Vicarious" leaked on the internet today. I've already heard it about 20 times and Ive got to say that it is fkn amazing, so intense, so visceral. Maynard's vocals sound like they are coming from somehwere desperate like he has something to get off his chest.

The entire band took it up to the next level, which is no surprise. Adam and Justin are experimenting with some new things and Danny's drumming is unrelenting. I cant wait till the entire album comes out May 2nd

Posted by shaw on Apr-15-2006 22:42:

I've gotta disagree. The Patient + Schism = Vicarious. Lyrics = SOAD. I'm not saying I dislike it at all, but I definitely wouldn't say they took anything to another level (the switched-up time signatures are nothing new, Danny's been using double bass since Aenima, and the production isn't anything groundbreaking...etc.). I truly hope the rest of the lyrics don't follow in the leaving-nothing-for-the-imagination style this one's taken on. As for the vocals, I'm not so sure I like it. I'll have to decide once I hear the rest of it.

Posted by The_One on Apr-16-2006 03:07:

I agree that Vicarious does have some Schism influence in it along witha bit of Meshuggah as well. All I know is that I liked it and can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

For the most part the people who have not liked it have been the ones with really really high expectations and when the single came out and didnt meet those expectations, they were immediately dissapointed.

I believe that the lyrics will be more direct this time. Maynard said it himself in an interview the whole global consciousness thing didnt work so now he is experimenting with more personal things. Things that are more close to home. According to Adam in his GW interview: "the attitude on the last record was very "healing" very "think for yourself" the attitude on this record is more about putting people in their place." So they are pissed again.

I wouldn't say I dislike it. To be honest, it's pretty much exactly what I was expecting. Nevertheless, I still think Lateralus is the greatest album ever made by anyone, so I'd have to say I fall into the group that loves 'Reflection,' rather than in the one of people who don't (I can't think of any other track they've made that has such a clear-cut difference of opinion between the two general camps of TOOL fans), so that "healing" approach is the one that got me hooked, and I hope they don't completely abandon it in favor of, in the words of a good friend of mine upon first hearing it, "A Perfect TOOL," though that's where it sounds like they're heading...and yeah, there is a significant amount of Meshuggah rip-off there.

Meshuggah rules though

I got to agree with you Lateralus is the best TOOL album ever period. I know that you didnt dislike Vicarious I read that in your other post. I was merely talking about the majority of other people who didnt like it.

TOOL always tend to lose and gain fans with every release. I remember when Lateralus came out and some said TOOL went "soft" and a lot of people dont like the political undertones in Vicarious which is funny cause to me TOOL has always been somewhat political. I for one Im glad that they are trying to deliver a message about our society and our current times. Anyway for all we know this could all be a lalalalalalie the track might not even be on the album. At this point I just want the album to be released so that all the speculation can end once and for all.

YAAARRRRRGGGGGHHH I am going to buy the 2 copies of the album when it comes out. Today I went out for a very long drive to nowhere and just popped in the album for a full in-depth listen from start to finish. I will try and post a full review sometime this week.

Listening now...so far...Meshuggah h4x like whoa.

Okay so there has been a lot of talk about a decoy record that was specifically made to throw off bootleggers. The proof many are using for this is something mentioned in the September 2005 Newsletter:

I'm not going to reveal my source, Mister Patience, but do you want to know the kind of things that have been going on while this record was being recorded? Okay, first there was the decoy record just to confound all those would-be bootleggers out there. This took, oh, about a year, just because the band members wanted it to sound pretty close to the real thing (so as to be believable), along with equally believable art design.

Which begs the question: Is the album that leaked the real album or not? The mystery continues....

TOOL sounds like the biggest wankfest since prince and the revolution.

Who seriously would spend a year making an album that wasnt getting released, no record company is going to let an artist do that kind of shit.

2 possibilities:
1) It's a load of shite and that really is the album (quite possible)
2) TOOL and their label really are that dumb (equally as possible)

Ive never heard TOOL and tbh have not even heard OF them, im just knocking em coz they have a crap name and joel likes em. But seriously sif a record label would let enuf tracks to make an album go nywhere without making some money from it.

Disregarding FKHD's statement^^^ Here is my review:

Vicarious: Read my other post about it. The most easily accessible track on the album. Classic.

Jambi: One of my favorite tracks on the album. In my opinion its the obvious choice for a second single. Adam's talkbox solo is fkn awesome.

Wings for Marie (Part 1): The intro to TOOL's lastest EPIC. As a whole the song is a masterpiece and a lovely tribute to Maynard's mother. It is what "Stairway to Heaven" was to Led Zeppelin. Builds into part two very well sets a somber mood to the entire song that builds and builds into a monster.

10,000 Days (Wings Part 2): What can I say about this beautiful piece of music. This is the part that always moves me. The lyrics are absolutely beautiful and very moving. I wonder if Maynard will be able to get through this song live. I get goosebumps when listening to it. The mood changes to one of hope, admiration, salvation. If this were a perfect world this would be the next single (both parts as whole of course).

The Pot - I love this song. Both musically (especially the bass) and lyrically. It seems to bash on those who are high on power, rabid fans, or close-minded people who dont acknowledge other perspectives.

EDIT: After a deeper listen I dont think this track is about rabid fans. I actually think its a subtle stab @ "Dubya" or other elected officials and includes several Katrina references. Its quickly becoming my favorite TOOL "insult track" along with Hooker with a Penis.

Lipan Conjuring - A genuine Lipan Apache chant that they use to call up spirits. Interesting to say the least.

Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman) - A 3 min long segue (one of their best in my opinion). Its very errie very haunting. A conversation takes place with what seems to be a nurse, a patient, and a doctor. At the end that docter says "tell me everything" and bam Rosetta Stoned....

Rosetta Stoned - Possibly the weirdest track on the album. Its reminds me of "third eye" in theme. The music is intense and some of the vocals are delivered in a completely new way that was surprising.

Intension - Let me just say that this is my least favorite song on the album. SO with that said I'll just say that is is very minimal and very relaxing. I do love the tabla on this track.

Right in two - The best song on the second half of the album. In my opinion creative in the viewpoint that it is told. I love Maynard's vocals on this one. Musically it starts off kind of soft then proggresively builds into a fkn beast.

Viginti Tres - Its an album closer.

Overall I loved the album. Im glad that it wasnt Lateralus II. If it turns out to be a decoy album then so be it. All I know is that it is a must have album to add to any TOOL fans collection. I think Kabir put it best "It may not be exactly what you are expecting, but it is exactly what you are waiting for."

holy [expletives].

Wow. Maybe I'm being a sucker for a gimmick, but I love the packaging/art.

As one of my friends commented, "Damn, and this comes with a free CD, too, right?"

Favorite = the 2nd one with the black background & body in a spiral, but the one of "Bardo Being" works the best, IMO (=the gold & purple Alex Grey one toward the end, with the 3-4 faces).

Posted by regulate on May-03-2006 23:22:

so was the leaked album the same as the retail one?

Posted by shaw on May-04-2006 03:00:
