if there's no celebration, maybe 514 prod can die off and leave the field to others who can produce better events.

such a typical comment.
Personally, I prefer seeing headliners at Aria, so I hope to actually see some different names pass through these days.. let alone techno (and no disrespect to Preach, but seeing as the former resident could very well be the only techno booking for the next while- kinda lame - so we'll see)

and the irony of the quoted statement, is I remember like it was yesterday when Aria had their own tactics for securing bookings back when they competed head to head with Sona in 2001.
This may be a 'one-off' of sort for Circus.. but if they ever decided to put the $ into the game and compete for bookings it'd be an interesting scenario. I wish they'd either do that finally or shut down.

Posted by antz66 on Sep-15-2005 23:23:

if circus starts booking international djs then bye bye to aria cuz the plce is so popular already basically relying solely on montreal talent plus the odd international booking

I wont be missing much

Ever hear of SHARING?

Aria can't steal alll the big names cmon! U telling me we aren't gonna have any big name DJs at our big parties anymore cuz Aria's decided to keep them all for themselves? I love Aria, but nothing beats a raaaaaaave.

Posted by magikb on Sep-15-2005 23:45:

One of my best NYE parties just happend to be at Aria in 2003.. I may be back again this year!!

Posted by Biggy on Sep-15-2005 23:46:

ok, enough arguments from me in here.
Aria will not close and Circus can book whatever they want, this is not our problem.

What is happening now and this is a fact (not speculation):

Roni Size
Timo Maas
Infected Mushroom
Seb Fontaine
Ferry Corsten
James Holden
Carl Cox
Lee Burrige
Preach
DJ Dan / Bad Boy Bill
Christopher Lawrence
Dieselboy
Deep Dish - featuring Sharam
Danny Howells

If I count Danny Howells/John Digweed and Markus Schulz, it's a total of 17 dj's for only 4 months.
Add the bookings at Dagobert and Guvernment on top of that. Do you seriously think a other club can offer so much bookings than us in Montreal?

This subject is over for me, if you want to continue debating about this stuff, it's up to you.

Kate, if you only like techno, you should move because techno is almost dead in Montreal (sad but true). You can bring the biggest artists and there is not much people coming. Go to Europe because it's the only place where they play this sound. For sure Aria will book 5-6 techno artists a year but not more than that.
There is Carl Cox, Richie, Sven, Liebing, Glaude and Mauro that are worth it (business wise, with other dj's you loose money). I know, this is sad but I will not pay from my pocket 2-3-4000$usd a week to be able to please 100 techno lovers. I used to try and try to promote techno in Montreal but people don't want it.

biggy: You're a smart man and i dont think circus has anything on you

But you have to admit if they get tiesto you guys have absolutely NO Chance for that night. You can not deny how big this man is, even if you got armin. Why bother going head to head?

You're night will be busy. But tiesto will be sold out.

I mean for god sake at BEB there must have been 8000 people alone packed in his side when he came on.

The only two guys u can counter with would be van dyk or oakenfold dont u think?

Posted by Biggy on Sep-16-2005 00:09:

As for Tisto, I had some deception with the attendance lately in Montreal. In December, we lost a shit load of money with him. Tickets were not selling fast and that much. There was only 2200 people for him wich is a disaster considering our expenses for this party. Bal en Blanc, it's a different story and the trance room is always more packed than the house room. Bal en Blanc was really big last year not only because of the bookings but because Montreal was on a big hype with raves because the last parties were really good (Cream and Celebration). We were involved (Aia/Guvernment) and we did some amazing bookings (and crazy promotions with our clubs and teams) and these partie were full of people again (because during 2002-2003 these parties sucked). Just Aria can sell about 1500-2000 tickets with the promoters, something 514 can't do.

We tried to do these parties but we don't believe in it. We lost a shit load of money because of our partners errors (like booking hip-hop at Swirl/514 idea). There is just 2 parties that are interesting in Montreal and it's Bal en Blanc and Black & Blue.
Venues are too expensive and when 514 wil understand that, they will stop trying to do these money holes parties. Actually 514 will try to find a partnet because you need money to do this and you need bookings wich they can't afford or book themself. I heard a rumour of Godskitchen, but this company is not in his town and they can't do shit. They tried to organize parties in TO but it didn't last even 2 months.

Posted by Biggy on Sep-16-2005 00:12:

I find it funny to need people from UK to organize parties in our own town. Go fuckin away! We can do this ourself!

Posted by antz66 on Sep-16-2005 00:17:

biggy cant Aria just take over 514 completely and then u call all the shots for the parties?

we have good parties here yes... but we can't even begin to compare parties here to parties in the UK or Europe... there just isn't any comparison at all.. 2 totally different atmospheres for sure and it is hard to recreate that here...let alone be allowed to.(outdoor festivals included in this)

as for Tiesto.. You would know the cost that goes into having him at such clubs.. and if you aren't making any money off having him there they why bother.. I don't blame you one bit... and Aria still has amazing bookings.. Montreal just has more of a range of what people like to listen to which makes it harder to keep everyone happy.. here in Toronto everyone is all about Trance for the most part anyhow.. with some of us who enjoy house, progressive or techno so because it is all trance here.. Tiesto sells out no problem.. completely different scenes from even Mtl to TO..

That is just the way these things go.. and I guarantee if it is PVD playing at Aria while Tiesto is at Circus.. more people will be at PVD just cuz he hasn't been in this area in a while now where as Tiesto is here every 6 months for sure!

Posted by Biggy on Sep-16-2005 00:28:

Maybe one day it will happen. For now 514 still owns the trademarks and they manage their parties like they want. The thing is when you don't have a club to book dj's, it's really difficult or almost impossible to get the big dj's. 514 use to own Sona but now they manage Circus wich is not booking anything.

And BTW, like I said, Tisto is playing a other club because a guy from Toronto wich is really close to Tisto is doing the party for Tisto at Circus. Same thing happened in TO with Tisto also.
Tisto and the guy keep a major part of the tickets sells.
I will never accept that a guy from Toronto come to rule my club in Montreal and keep all the money of the ticket sells.

Posted by antz66 on Sep-16-2005 00:31:

oh i see i thought they went bankrupt after they closed sona version 2 and swirl 2004 got canceled then i remember someone saying Aria took them over and just kept the name 514 and shit i didnt know they manage circus

Posted by Biggy on Sep-16-2005 00:31:

Oh yeah, Toronto is a completely different story.

For a show with Tisto or PVD they can have 4000-5000 people.

Here it's about 2000.

Posted by Biggy on Sep-16-2005 00:33:

Anyway, this topic is about NYE at Aria.

Can we comeback on the subjet please.

Thank you

P.S. anyway, you know everything now!

Posted by antz66 on Sep-16-2005 00:37:

alrite alrite will get back to nye but thanks for the info anyways that was some good shit

Posted by Marcus007 on Sep-16-2005 01:11:

Thanks for taking the time to explain all this to us JF. We appreciate your patience.

Just keep up the bookings, man.

edit: By the way, armin at aria vs. tiesto at circus would be a very close call. I'd even go as far as to say that they'd be neck at neck. I know a BUNCH of people (granted not 1800 :P) who'd take armin over tiesto ANY DAY.

Posted by Hman on Sep-16-2005 02:21:

deepdish and danny howells

Posted by ohyeah again on Sep-16-2005 13:48:

At Swirl, I think the crowd LOVED Chris Liebing. Most DJ's that play in Montreal all say that the ppl here like really hard, underground music. We need MAURO, thats all i ask for!

Posted by ohyeah again on Sep-16-2005 15:49:

I think if we can bring any techno dj in a 3ham club, thats can help, cuz a lots of people don't want to go anymore in parties or afterhours, because of pills,so they replace it by alcool. Like Carl cox or any djs who go to 1234 or space, its a good thing. With a lot of advertising(radio, newspapers, forum) it can be better. I tell you, there's a lot of people love listening techno music every day,but don't want to go into a after or party, when everybody are stone.
