The cdj1000 is awful for scratching? Tell that to guys like Eddie Halliwell and James Zabiela. And how on Earth would you know how well this new Denon is going to be...its not out yet. This same buzz was going around when the Technics cd deck got released and now dj shops are begging people to take them off their hands because no one wants them. The Pioneer will be industry standard for a long time for a reason.

Firstly I agree CDs should be treated differently, they serve a different purpose and there are certain problems with vinyl which the whole CD thing is supposed to overcome but if you keep trying to make them more and more like vinyl you'll end up losing the whole point in using CDs in the first place!

I'm not sure if it's perfect... there are still a couple of very useful features it could have before I'll be TOTALLY happy to ditch vinyl. For a start, I don't think moving up to 0.01% accuracy on up to 10% pitch range is an unfair thing to ask for (as much as anything else it's a psychological thing - I'd want absolutely any movement I make to the slider to make a difference).

Secondly, they've tried quite hard to make it possible to see what happens in the track, where the changes are etc with the wave display but you can't see things like a bassline coming in (as in a properly mastered track there isn't any overall change in volume) which I'd find very useful (and I can do with vinyl! although I've just said you shouldn't try and copy it... but I think it's acceptable to try and encorporate useful features ) so if they can come up with a way of showing that kind of thing I'd be sold

On the scratching front, as good as it is, scratching on a CDJ still sounds quite 'digital' to me... there's always a very small amount of digital distortion and it just doesn't quite sound right - I don't know if it's a sample rate thing or just the lack of natural analogue warmth you get with a record. Feel-wise, I agree you don't really need to make it feel exactly the same as vinyl cos it's not vinyl! But you will find, however strange it feels, if you make the same movements as you would with vinyl on a CDJ1000 it actually makes the same changes to the sound (or very very close to it).

that is definately an issue and guys from denon are concerned are looking to fix that with a firmware upgrade but they recommend to wait a few seconds for it to load into buffer when backcueing

Does this player display a wave table?

Does this player have alpha track like the other Denon premium CD player?

Does it have portable memory cards that store all my CD info/hot cues for gigging?

I tried a 3500 briefly last week while buying my new pioneer cdj1000mkIIs... i thought it looked a lot better in person than in pictures... platter seemed very responsive and the pitch fader is a lot stiffer/tighter than the one on the mkII.. i regret not trying the effects or playing an mp3 cd but overall i thought it was a sweet cd player, especially for the price.. i was only disappointed by the play and cue buttons, which i felt were very stiff when compared to the buttons on my old dual decks, dn-d9000...

no.

no.

no, but "Up to 5,000 points can be saved to internal memory and shared with other Denon players."
whatever that means.

I'm thinking of getting one of these.
I've looked at the cdj 800, 1000 and even the cmx3000. If this player is as good as it looks on paper then it's a pretty easy decision.
But is it durable?
I've never used any denon equipment before, and ive had some bad experience buying cheap electronics that boasts a vast array of features. All the goodies on this player arent worth spit if it wont play cds after 6 months.

Also, IMO, when buying dj gear getting as many features as possible is always important ( after durability of course ). Just mixing songs can get boring, and a good cd player allows a great deal of creativity.
Even if you're not going to be scratching in the near future, the opportunity to do so is nice to have. You're skill and creativity should be the bottleneck, not the equipment.

Yeah, it's very durable. I played with one a bit, and it felt more solid than the CDJ's. Denon is also the industry standard for dual-decks. They make solid gear...
