great replies guys, thanks
Pete Rock/C.L. Smooth
Count Bass D
KMD
Ultramagnetic MC's
Digable Planets
Redman (his early 90's, pre-Christina Aguilera days)
Just a few that hadn't been mentioned.
Oh, and De La Soul! I know someone already mentioned them, but if you've never heard their music, you've been missing out. One of the best hip-hop groups of all time and my personal favorite.
I honestly think that most hip hop these days is quite piss poor.
Tru hip hop would be most stuff that came out in the early to mid nineties.
Most of artist s that represent the true hip hop sound are:
Dilated Peoples
Gangstarr
Imortal Technique
Last Emperor
Aesop Rock
Cunninglinguists
Jeru
KRS One
A Tribe Called Quest
Madlib
Rakim
Nas (most of his early shit)
and most of the early Wu Tang solo albums from artists such as:
Inpsectah Deck
RZA
Ghostface
Killah Priest
GZA
Raekwon
If I ruled the world I'll free all my niggaz! yey!
good to see fellow hiphop heads on the forums, and from what i see the guys that know about hiphop really do know about hiphop which is great!
lately i've been listening to a lot of mos def and gang starr as well as some of nas's old unreleased stuff
i should mention big l is one of my favourite artists (he was part of DITC) and also biggie. even though he was a bit on the commercial side, you just can't go past the dope 90's style beats he rapped over and his voice and wordplay just work so well.
some of shadow's stuff is ace and madvillian...
tho my latest fave song is jay-z's track.....I got 99.....and the BITCH AIN'T ONE!
What exactly constitutes "true" hip hop?
I don't know if Saul Williams is hip hop or rap, but I'm really lovin' this stuff right now. For those who aren't familiar, listen to the tune "Grippo."
I haven't really ventured forth past NWA, Tribe or KRS... maybe it's time to do so?
I think Q-Tip deserves a worthy mention as well.
oh and can't forget Arrested Developments "Mr. Wendel!!!"

Which De La Soul album would be best to start with? Go from oldest to most recent?

and i remmember in one the documentaries about De La Soul and Jedi Mind Tricks they all talked about skateboarding even though it's usually attributed to punk rock.
Yet the fact remains that musically, Skateboarding culture is primarily dominated by white rockers and Hip-Hop culture is primarily dominated by black rappers. The few exceptions to this rule you may find wouldn't prove your point.

3 feet high and rising is an excellent album though if you want something more up to date definatly check out AOI: bionix.
one hip-hop group that i haven't seen mentioned yet are the roots, who i think are excellent though large commercial success eluded them.
brand nubian
gangstarr
Mos Def
Talieb Kwalei
eric b & rakim
mobb deep
peanut butter wolf
planet asia
J5
masta ace
black moon
the roots
atmosphere
wu-tang
bush babies
killa priest
del la sol
blackalisious
and there is so much more... damn the 90's kicked ass... if music still sounded like 90's hip hop i probably wouldnt be listening to trance.. all the new so called hip hop is a disgrace and pathetic.
To me , Kanye West sounds really inspirational . His songs from Late Registration album are good . "Addiction " sounds really good . As much as I dont like rap , Kanye is a great artist . Could someone recommend me similiar artists?
