all these subgenres just plain confuse me. sometimes I have a hard enough time deciding whether something is house or trance, let alone sub-categorizing the shit out of it.

Tracks these days are way too hard to categorize. So many songs just use elements from multiple genres.

I give up, it's all just EDM to me

It's really confusing if you start to pigeonhole everything. I try to think of 'genres' as adjectives describing how the track sounds and feels. All trance is trance but there's the uplifting kind, the dark kind, the 'psy' kind, and techno is just a flavor.

I just don't even bother mentioning genres unless it's someone who doesn't know anything about the music. When I mention any type of genre on here half the time I get elitest remarks about how it's the furthest thing from genre X and it starts a flame war.

cheers for the samples preach mix of papel rocks! was sure i put it in my list but evidently not. i like the sound of most of the others.. infact all barring the 2nd one; will have to look into them (what's the full name of the last clip?)

i know you expressed distaste for fred baker but can't help feeling his new tune 'the jungle' (with greg nash) has a similar feel to some of those... driving, hypnotic & atmospheric. sample. i'm not normally a fan of his material but still... i can't quite see how the samples you posted should be called techtrance & that shouldn't... though feel free to set me right

the last clip is Ivan - Red Star (Pads mix)
regarding what is techtrance and not I would say that the definiton which Ian mentioned earlier is the standing one for me. Techtrance is techno with a touch of trance. Rather than trance with a touch of techno.

What's the use of putting those songs into subgenres if you hate using them anyway?

Posted by stefanoc on Oct-07-2005 09:46:

i dont hate using these songs though lol.

i just hate subcategories cz they get complicated.

i just like to know, so i can tell the difference when im talkin to others and can understand the difference when others are talkin to me about it.

thanx.

Giving something a 10 second chance sure as hell is.

Anyone who doesn't suck would be well-advised to seek out Midi Miliz - Cyclic Structures... a brilliant piece of EDM!

I like one style of tech trance but the other stuff does my head in.

Driving trance with loads of techy sounds to it is absolutely class. Sander Van Doorn is the man for this.

However that stuff that builds into a mark normal style breakdown with loads of stabby synths and those annoying stoppy starty snares is unbelievably shit.

well, there is different kinds of techno too.
many Marcel Woods tunes is more on the techno than trance side...
Like;
Marcel Woods - Time's Running Out (Original Mix)
Marcel Woods - Drama
Marcel Woods - Static State (Original mix)
