AHH yeah...
I am not going to give you a strict list but I will sugest some stuff to consider.

DECKS:
Technics sl 1210 mk2

This is probably what you will see when you walk into a nightclub.
Its great, it lasts forever and it has a good resale value.
I would sugest you familiarise yourself with the industry standard.
All the top jocks that still spin records are still demanding this to spin.

Its been out there 20 years.
The models above it (md3 mk3 mk4 mk5) are basicly the same deck with the same exact
feel but they removed the click from the zero mark so it doesn't dip when you hit zero
and they did some minor tonearm modifications ( so in other words less skipping )

You can get a pair of 1200/1210 mk5 at 1200's.com( the official internet dealer) for 880.00
I sold mine for a ton, and now I am using my brothers mk2 till I move to NY.
If you google you can find them as low as 830.00 but I would rather buy them
from the official technics dealer to make sure Iam not getting bstock product.

The m5g

Boy this one looks good! You will have your friends come over and be like
''Holy shit!! this is a cool deck''
It has cool ''sexy blue leds'' and a ''much nicer black finish''.
However I wouldn't buy this one for the reason that it has a digital copmuterized pitch.

This could be good because it is a lot more stable as it has minimal pitch variation.
In other words your records will turn around in a constant rate.
On the down side however you get less accuracy due to pitch quantization.
YOU can see at the technics webie that the pitch is infact digital.

Lets say the difference between two songs isnt 1,40 or 1,45 its 1,4632....
It depends on how perfect you want your mixing to be...
Analog pitch equals infinite setings...
There is very little pitch variation on a perfectly calibrated mk2 or mk3 anyway..
..Its up to you.


Decks will set you back 800-900$ (dont buy used you wont save that much)

Mixer

Get allen & heath.

Get the xone 62


It sounds fantastic.I sold my djm600 to buy one. It sounds 10 times better then that pioneer. I can actually turn my fuckin speakers up and I wont get any nasty distortion.
Spec wise it is in the same league as the xone 92 but there are features from the 92 that I miss. For example there is no scratch curve (in other words you cant scratch with the mixer) I got a mint 6 month old unit for 700$ on ebay and I will probably be keeping it for
a couple of years.
New its going to set you back 900 $.

If you are going to be using ableton live or stuff like that you will need the 92 which will
cost 1450. If you want knobs instead of faders you will have to pay even more.

Another exelent quality mixer is the rotary rane.
I personaly prefer faders vs knobs but try it, lots of people swear by it
I am not sure about the price on this one but I can imagine its around the 1000 mark.



Next you need to deside how are you going to play digital music.
The web is full of amazing music.Some legal some illegal.
Its just out there for you to explore.

Get the rane serato live. 499 $
It's a litte devise that acts as an interface between your computer and your analog turntables alowing you to play digital files on your decks.
Imagine having an endless supply of of vinyl to spin till your hands get tired.
The beatmatching proccess is exacly the same as it would be on vinyl
You mix it up manually and you finetune your mix by riding the pitch aka manually pitch bending.

I own stanton final scratch2 and I love it because it works with tractor dj studio you can loop the music you get hotcues and effects and my favorite feature is that you can mark the structure of your tracks using little flags (cue points).
However I must warn you that ther are copatibility issues that you sould be aware of.
People you own powerbooks that have 1.25 gigs of ram complain about the freezes and the fuck ups in the middle of their set.

If you have less than 2 gigs of ram expect the same.
It is extremely hungry memory wise due to its firewire protocol.
My dad gave me his computer, when he got a new one, and that computer
had 3 gigs of ram. I havent had any problem with the thing ,but again, my computer has 3 gigs of ram.

Final scratch 2 goes down to 1,3 thousants of a second latency.
Rane goes down to 7 thousants of a second latency.
Both are pretty low. Unless you have a extremely fast computer definately go fot the rane serato.

Anybody who owns timecode systems swear by them.
Endless playlists of dozens of thousants of tracks to spin sunrise to sunset.
You are doing it for the fun of it aren't you?
You will get good fast!!
Any vinyl dj is limited to his record collection.Bedroom djs who dont make any money have a poor record collection.They end up playing the same shit over and over again because they cant afford new music.
Thanks to timecode systems time is your only limitation.

Mp3 are dirt cheap and that is if you are paying for them.
Djs do hardcore filesharing btw which I think is wrong but thats another issue .

On the down side

mp3s dont sound as good as cds.

But you dont have to use them. By purchasing a 300 gig harddrive you can store
aproximatelly 4000 songs as wave files
Songs you will be purchasing for 1.50 on beatport or promo stuff you will be digitizing off vinyl.
4000 tracks are enough music for a gig dont you think?

With everbody using cds you might find places that have turntables that arent functioning properly.

Well... rare one, vinyl is not gone yet.

It doesnt have a keylock.

Actually it does but its shite and people dont use it.
At least I dont.

Pioneer cdj 1000 mk2 pair 1.900$

Industry standard. Every desent club in the world has them. You wont need a laptop
to play music. You will just burn cds.
However the beatmaching process is a whole different thing.
True you cue it like a record but you match the beats using a jog like you would on classic cdjs.
They fixed the resolution to a desent 0,02 (still turntables have better resolution).
One thing you might like using cds is the finetunning process.
By turning the jog back and forth you get it right and by continuing to turn the jog back and forth you keep the mix tight.
You dont get a mix in terms of where you just set the pitch at one point and then worry about the faders to make things happen.
But hey thats not nesesarelly a bad thing.
I saw Steve Lawler, who is a perfectionist dj, and he was pitchbending the whole time.
Even during the mix.
The result was sooo fuckin seamless.
The keylock is pretty good too if you compare it to that final scratch 2 has.
I own one and I would like a second one
but right now I am just using final scratch2 because I cant really afford a second one and I am used to playing vinyl.
I suggest you learn to play records to.
Its a lot of fun.
And you can always add cdj's to you set up afterwards.

CDJ 200

You should seriously consider the cdj 200 because its REALLY good.
I have seen them as low as 318$ each.
You loose the fun backcueing feature but you can achive a good professional sounding mix becuse it has a 0,02 pitch resolution like the cdj 1000mk2.
In terms of value and performance this is the best at that price range.
Very high resale value.
Did I mention it supports mp3
Get a timecode system though If you cant afford the cdj 1000mk2. Its more fun.

Headphones : the Pioneer sound good and bassy but dont get them cause they break .
The sony 7056 are ggod headphones, with clear imaging, but for djing I would suggest something basier.
Get the seinheiser hd 25 pro.

I am just using a basic alesis cheapy nearfield system but you dont have to
you have 2700 for A HOT SOUNDSYSTEM.
Your music will sound only as good as the system amplifing it
A 2700$ studio monitor system will sound amazing and will be ideal.



GET THIS : 2 genelec 8030a 1050-1250 $
with the 7050B subwoofer 800-950 $
Very three dimentional.
I f you think you can afford higher end models like the 8040 a get them instead.
Everything else will seam like an imitation of the real thing.
You can latter use any of these for production.

True you can use cheapy monitors and buy cdjs but I wouldnt personally skimp on the sounsystem if I were you. Sound is very important.

I hope my information helps buddy . Do some reserch and ask for better prices.

Of course you can have a personal preference for Technics, but specwise these completely blow the techs away. I have a set of these of my own (SYNQ), I love them.

They are manufactured by a couple of brands, like Reloop, Citronic, Synq, American Audio, BST, Akiyama etc. They all have different names for the same table.

Here's a picture of the SYNQ version of the table, called the XTRM-1.



I don't know if these tables are sold outside of Europe yet though. But when they do, I'm sure technics can pack its bags

And Trogdor, there are 2 options:
1. You haven't tried one of these tables yet, so you can't say anything about them.
2. You have tried them but like to play it safe and keep with the Technics.

I have the synqs too! They've said that they were better than the technics and they're much cheaper too!
I can't compare them with technics cause I've only spinned on technics one time and it was when I've never touched a TT before so I couldn't do shit
But the synqs kick ass!

And good head phones I have got Technics RPDJ1200's
For the mixer though I would have to recommend the Urei 1620le
Do not dismiss this mixer, it is probably the best sound mixer on sale in the world right know. If you have to have fancy features get a Pioneer EFX1000 and a Dope Real or Duo Isolator for EQ.
This will give you the best sound for your money.
For the monitors get some good active studio monitors, you'll have to go and listen to some, but try to get some that you can match a sub woofer with. If you have any money left contact Deconomix who can build you a unit to put all the equipment in.
I have a Urei and trust me I will never go back to mixing with linear sliders or crossfaders again. The control you have over the mix with the rotaries is unsurpassed.

synq is stanton and some other company...just different names in different countries?

The synq's are basically the old stanton 150's (I think, or the new ones)

maybe im just old or something but if i got a 10 grand payout id either a) put the lot in a high interest ISA account b) invest it all in oil shares.
