Well, Seven Ways was not very innovative/unique. Sure, it might be good, but just goodness doesn't put albums in the "masterpiece" category.

And didn't Orbital just improve their style from the Green Album a bit for that one?

Innovative? Maybe not. Unique? Possibly. The fact that is about 80 minutes of perfectly executed trance which explores structures, themes and ideas and has something for everyone qualifies it for me.

Er... they took the production up a notch, totally revamped the structures and musical ideas and expanded what was a fledgling idea on Green into a full musical journey. So technically yes. Certainly it still sounds unique and innovative though, and you can't argue with the quality.

Green was basically a very nascent British take on techno, with rave style breakbeats. Most of the track structures, the elements used and the ideas were borrowed from elsewhere, and simply brought together in a new light. Brown broke away from established trends. It was still techno, and it still had a very British rave sound to it, but it didn't play out how you'd expect it to at all.

I bought the Green album a while back for 99 cents but it was so paltry that it was hardly even worth that.

I paid a fiver for it. The last three tracks - Chime Live, Midnight Live and Belfast are ace, but the meat of the album is really unremarkable.

Delusions of Grandeur

not an album per se, but it's by the Hardkiss brothers.

+1, even if it was mixed with his feet.

Prodigy - The Fat of The Land is awesome too.

BT - Escm
Rob D - Furious angels
DM - Violator

Time will tell if Playing The Angel is a masterpiece. Im liking it more than Violator at the moment but im not sure if it'll stand the test of time as well

I dont bother with albums, but my votes go:

Hybrid - Finished Symphony
Orbital - Halcyon and on and on

Posted by RebeL9 on Oct-24-2005 22:34:

L.S.G. - Rendezvous In Outer Space
BT - ESCM
Man With No Name - Moment of Truth <- this is pure trance glory form start to end.

Oh boy, i was ready to start a similar thread myself. Ok there you go...
A few masterpieces!....(Synth albums in general and not just EDM)
Brian Eno- Another Green World (ok tis is spacey prog-rock but its sooo good)
Neu!-"2" and "3" ( Did you know these guys? They were playing 70s "kraut rock"- a minimalistic trippy german kind of thing...they invented punk, ambient, EDM and industrial you know...)
Can- "Tago Mago" and "Future Days" (spacey kraut rockers! Both albums masterpieces)
Kraftwerk- "Autobahn" (krautrocker's/proto-electronic wizards'skraftwerk's classic)and "trans-europe express"
Tangerine Dream- Rubycon
Steve Roach- "Structures from Silence" (This is simply roach's masterpiece...nothing else!)
The Cure- Disintegration (Happy i see it mentioned. One of the best synth-pop/new-wave/dark-wave whatever albums ever!)
Clan of Xymox- Medusa (These guys are hardly known but this album is the BEST 80s synth-pop album leaving the new-orders, soft-cells and OMDs way behind!)
Depeche Mode- Violator (But not the Depeche Modes!)
OMD- Architecture and Morality (OK,ok this album by OMD is a masterpiece in my opinion!)
Yello- One Second ("Stella" was good but this is the master-piece in my opinion. Is there anything stranger than the 80s synth-pop act yello?)
The Chameleons U.K- Strange Times (sorry this is not EDM or electronic its pure 80s new wave but with looottss of synth-lines.Damn't it, every single tune in this one has a better melody than every trance track ever written!)
Orbital- In Sides (Orbital's BEST album.end.)
Underworld- Second Toughest in the Infants.(IDM/progressive classic)
Leftfield- Leftism (another IDM/progressive classic..!)
Autechre- Incanabula (first and classic)
Boards of Canada-Music Has The Right to The Children (anyone heard anything about the NEW ALBUM?!?!?!?!!)
Aphex Twin- Selected Ambient Works (2nd is good but the 1st is in my heart)
Moby- "ambient" (well, "18" and "hotel" are good but this old album by moby is...astonishing!)
Global Communications- 76.14 (ambient mind-trip!)
Bola- Bola
Vangelis- Opera Sauvage (melodies that brings tears to your eyes!)
Vangelis- Blade Runner OST (most "Atmospheric and deep" album ever written)
Vangelis- Direct ( "Elsewhere" gives me goosebumbs every single time i hear it!)
Jean Michael Jarre- Equinoxe (spacey, strabge and beautifull)
Slowdive - "Souvlaki Space Station" ( This is called "shoegazer", its reverbed rock music-spacey walls of sound and ethereal vocals. Well, it is very atmospheric not EDM and...a masterpiece!)
Ulrich Schnauss- A Strangely Isolated Place (this is like slowdive made purely by synths. Well slowdive were better but nevertheless this is verry beautifull as well.
M83- Before The Dawn Heals Us (BEST ALBUM EVER IMO!!!)
Sigur Ros- Takk ( well, this is not EDM, not rock, not ambient...its sigur ros, its strange, it has a guy playing electric guitar with a bow..evokes cold soundscapes, nostalgia, hidden feelings..canno't be explained...!).
And for trance's sake...
LSG- the best of LSG (i would say the best of progressive/trance in general!)
Mirco De Govia- "Chronoscale" (well, this is a bit childish and quite fast sometimes but is has damn good melodies... i'm not sure if this is a masterpiece but because there are not many trance albums out there, this actually gains the first price!)

If you like that, check out Moby's side project, Voodoo Child. The album is called The End of Everything.

Way out West's eponymously titled debut certainly comes close.
