Wow... I had an amazing time last night! I was one of the first ones in thanks to standing in line since about 10:30 (argh ) so I was just chilling upstairs waiting for the place to get a bit more crowded. I don't know who the 1st DJ on the balcony was, but he was playing some housey tunes that I was diggin.

Then Lavelle comes on... I dunno I couldn't really get into his set too much. He played a few songs I really like (I seem to remember Holden's remix of Safari being one of them) but that shit with cutting out the sound for a few seconds at a time really killed the flow for me. The first few times he did it, I thought he blew a circuit breaker or something... I was like

After what felt like an ETERNITY Holden comes on and immediately assualts the club with dark, pounding basslines and guttural beats, and didn't let up the whole night. No breaks, no resting, just BOOM the entire time. Incredible. I was groovin'... just couldn't stop! I've definitely added him onto my list of favorite DJs. Damnit... I can't wait to see him again!

I didn't even bother with the AHP... I left after Holden's set. All night of Solarstone the previous evening plus 4 hrs of beach football the same day kinda killed me. But somehow when the music came on it was like all that went away. Amazing.

Great to see all the TAs out there too!

I spundae'd the whole night and we left around 3:30, hit up the del taco and crashed at my friends place.

You guys missed a CLASSIC awesome hard-trance\house set by Swedish Egil. Man, I remember listening to him in 1997. The CDJ's broke in the backroom so he was mixing on the decks all night. He played alot of old trance tunes that I really enjoyed.

glad I stuck around spundae cause i'm broke.

That was Justin & John Do!! I *heart* those dudes!!

I loved it when Justin played Robophobia. I haven't heard that song at a club since JZ played it @ MNS!!

Posted by HotDogWater on Oct-24-2005 02:47:

oh yeah, let me mention.... Safari, on Avalon sound = un-fucking-real!

Posted by Arfboy on Oct-24-2005 03:28:

Last night was insane. Now I know why you guys hyped up Holden so much in the previous weeks. He lived up to all of it and then some. I'm a believer now.

Matt Darey played a good finishing set. Lots of hard beats to follow Holden.

Last meal 31.5 hours ago + 8 hours of dancing = instant weight loss.

It was good seeing everyone last night!

Omg Holden rocked the place. I have never seen a dj work so hard, he was constantly doing something. His set was just incredible. Too bad he didnt get on til almost 230. I didnt get to the club til around 12 cause of my stoner friends were too blazed to drive so I had to sober up a little bit to drive and then I went the wrong way on the freeway so it took like an hour to get there. Anyways, I got in at around 1230 and I heard the first guy playing Robophobia and I was like hell yea. I tried to find some of you guys but I never could. Maybe next time.

Like everyone said, Lavelle was fucked up and he trainwrecked alot. While he was playing though, I went up to the balcony to find my friends and they were standing right across from Holden!!! I was like holy fuck thats him! I didnt have a camera on me but I did shake his hand and asked him what time he was to go on. Hes a pretty cool dude, just a scrawny, geeky kinda guy lol. I cant wait to see him again with just him as the headliner. I need like a 6 hour set from him. That would blow my mind

if im not mistaken, the moby track 2nd to last song in Lavelle's set was another vocal track layered over Moby - God Moving Over the Face of the Water, i remember the violins n pianos from that song quite well since I love the track ever since I watched the movie Heat w/ Pacino n De Niro, btw in the movie they have an even better version of the song then Moby originally composed, in my opinion. But yea, I dont agree w/ lotta ppl here in that Lavelle was pure ballsack sweat, like others said, sure he trainwrecked every now n then, but the tracks were slammin. Kinda funny when he turned the volume down during Killers' track expectin ppl to be singin lyrics and everyone was dead silent haha. The man got paid, had fun, and we paid him so more power to him.

all i have to say is that i saw tejpatel. this makes it twice in 2 months.

had a little sleep and wanted to say a few more things, agreed about the 2 guys that warmed the crowd up before levelle went on, very nice track selection, got everyone right in the mood and put smiles on people's faces since most everyone in the club was pissed about how long we had to stand in the rain before they let us in but within minutes of getting in that was long forgotten. a large group of ta's were in the middle center and dancing right when levelle and holden were doing the change over and i realized i didn't see tigo or clovis and i had to find them to experience this magic with them since they are one of the reasons i even knew about holden, so i make my way around the right side and down front where surprisingly there was ample room minus the washing machines going full force, insane. and of course there are tigo and clovis and the 3 of us are front and center and for the next 2 hours we went down an amazing journey with stunned looks on our faces at the insane talent that this mere boy has!!! thank you guys for rockin out with me up front. also thank you carrie for being an awsome partner in crime, man what a night! and to bob for hosting and eric and mike as well as bob for spinning, without you near and so my request never got fullfilled but alas thank you to phillipe, bob and eric for iding that second sun song the spell and burning it for me so i can repeatedly enjoy it!

as for trance that several people on this thread can't stand, i still love it, it's definitely different and there are 2 very different vibes that go along with it but man it still touches my soul on so many levels. i got to thinking, i got to enjoy a superb night of lots of different types of music for the low, low cost of $15, how unbelievably lucky are we here in southern california that we have the opportunities that we do, i saw 6 djs with varing styles that many different people could connect to, got to meet holden and matt darey, i am lucky to know mike lord who spun at spundae and then got to finish out my experience dancing to 3 gentlemen who love the music so much that they continued to spin for the after after hour power into sunday afternoon, i for one feel very lucky and honored to know so many of you TA's and to get to be exposed to so many different djs styles! Prog and house is right there with my love of trance and holden fucking solidified the insanity that was last night for me!

Ditto.

'm a lot more into weird sound effects, deep/guttural lows, and ethereal highs.

Trance isn't really my bag of tea anymore. I'm a lot more into weird sound effects, deep/guttural lows, and ethereal highs.

and you as well, you are very chill and no worries about our conversations last night, everyone was a bit faded! glad we could experience the master that is holden!

Posted by bas on Oct-24-2005 06:20:

yeah so...i was really bored last night. kinda checked out early. holden started out strong, but as soon as he hit "come to me" i was done. lots of ass kicking bass, and lots of sick tunes, but i don't know...overall a boring night.

ESPECIALLY with Lavelle's drunk ass fucking up all the time, that was the most annoying shit. one trainwreck is bad enough...but he had what? 4, 5? maybe more. whatever...i liked that 2nd track into holden's set....that had me dancing the most.

Posted by Jeffree on Oct-24-2005 06:31:

Well you guys pretty much covered it, so I'll just say it was excellent meeting those of you I hadn't before, and excellent to see ya'll that I have! And those of you that I never actually "met" but saw, I'm sure we'll meet again!
What a great night!

Posted by buchnaner on Oct-24-2005 06:40:

fuck, looks like i missed a sick night, but i expected as much from holden. i just can't get myself to get over to the club after working at a restaurant all night ...

for those familiar w/ balance 005, did he play any of the first 5 tracks from cd1?

heheh Hey Clovis.......everyone is slowly seeing the light!! LOL ahhh man what a fucking night! it was good seeing everyone out that night...always makes the clubbing more enjoyable! Got in and Justin and John were throwing down some nice house ch00ns! wehnt out for a few smokes and Levelle got on! went to check him out...and right when i get inside i hear on of my Fav tracks Soulwax - E talking.....and incase anyone wants to know its the (Soulwax Nite version) rmx...anyway....then suddenly i hear the worst trainwreck EVER! Jesus i agree he played some Doooope tunes....but honestly he IS the worst DJ i have ever seen live! i swear i thought maybe he had been mixing for a month with the performance i was seeing! anyway then went out for a smoke....then i dont remember who but came out and said "duuude holden is coming on" boom ran right in and found everyone on the dance floor! this was the first time at Avalon that i didnt go upstairs...not even once! annnnd when holden came on....i didnt leave the room once.....so i didnt miss a fuckin SECOND of holden! and wooooow out of the 4 times i have seen him already.....that was the best set i had heard! not only have i seen his name getting more familiar each time he's in LA....but like someone said...sometimes he wasnt the best mixer...but shit he as a DJ is becoming AMAZING! after he finished his set...it was time for me to finally have a well desirved cig! ahhhhhh was chatting with a few TA's then Holden comes thru the smokin patio and all of us started yelling HOLDEEEEN!! haha mofo was wasted too but he still spun a siiick set...unlike **caugh** Lavelle **caugh** anyway....looks like a great night was had by all....and im glad everyone is starting to like this kind of music. anyway...should get back to work now!! Bye everyone

We got to Avalon around 9:50pm and there was only a few people there, we found out quickly by talking to the bouncer that there was a concert going on inside and that they will only begin to let people in after 11pm, damm! plus it started to rain.
Around 10:45pm people started to line up in, a bunch of people started to cut the line getting people piss off, the tension was building after 1 hour waiting in the rain we got inside.
Justin & John Do were spinning they did a really good job I thought starting really slow and building up their set for the headlines.
Then James Lavelle was on the deck, man he was such a disappointment. I agree with the other review he had a good track selection but he could not make his set gel together and I did not know he was drunk I guess it explain everything.
When Holden got on the desk the crowd went crazy, his style is not my cup of tea (constant baseline make it very boring to me) but I can see why people like him because his mixing was flawless.
As far as Afterhour Power, I have know clue how Darey was cause I end up spending the whole afterhour in the upstairs room.

Ps: the lighting was better then at Ferry's

Nice pics!

I forgot to post about Justin and John Do. I didn't really get a chance to hear their whole set, but I really dug what I heard. I think i was told those are the guys that normally play on the upstairs back patio?
I remember the last few times i've been to Avalon I've dug the upstairs back patio more than the actual main room. During Sasha's last time at Avalon I had much more fun up there than on the main dance floor.

Are these the same guys? Also do they have a website or at least a Myspace?
