-- [Politics] Has John Howard done a good job?
Pages (8): « 1 [2] 3 4 5 6 7 8 »
i was just asking for some evidence pertaining to these reforms and you have provided them, so thank you. i wasnt leaning one way or the other, i just wanted some facts, instead of those government advertisements..
and as far as the legalisation things goes, the currently legal substances cause much greater harm, which is a great omen for the argument of switching.
^^ im not saying that IR doesnt need reforming, but this tips the balance so far in favour of business i think its disgusting. as jono4l said, its moving us down the US route where we\'ll be increasing the numbers of working poor. the US hasnt had a minimum wage increase since 1997. im not totally sure, but those under AWAs arent going to get the benefits of minimum wage increase (this is an assumption, i dont know for sure, wheres renegade?). so how does a person on a \"bargained\" award keep up with things like inflation etc?
as far as im concerned the main issue of drug reform is what does criminalisation achieve? it makes drugs more expensive, benefitting those that are flouting the law to begin with, and pushes crime rates higher.
i am highly suspect of the argument that decriminalising narcotics would lead to a higher rate of use. it would be negligable at best imo. i dont see massive problems in the ACT where pot has been decriminalised. but even if it did increase their use, i still argue that many of the negative impacts associated with drug use is closely tied in with their illegal status.

| Originally posted by tathi here is an interesting article on prescription drugs. Read whats in red, eg: \"Street drugs kill only 10% as many people every year, as legal, prescription drugs (6-times more than those Americans killed in the Vietnam War).\" |
not at all; i was just pointing out that there are legalised drugs that are far more dangerous that some street drugs

| what i would guarantee however was if you moved the responsibility of prescription medication from pharmaceutical companies and legislative bodies to backyard cook-houses that those stats would be far far worse. |
lets not forget how well treated the aboringinal people are...
live like kings they do.

^^ only because i know more in that area, why don't you fill us in on whats happening in public health Narcism

If only Labor could come with a leader with some spine, they would already be in government by now. Unfortunately, there really doesn't seem to be a strong alternative to Howard at the moment, and voters are inclined to support a leader that they know and trust (i have no idea why anyone would trust him
)
Lets be honest though, a large proportion of Australian voters are not well versed on different policies, and are strongly influenced by government rhetoric and the media. If little Johnny tells them that the economy is great shape and they will be better off under a Liberal government, a large proportion of people will snap that up and vote accordingly because they only seem to vote with their back pocket in mind. However, as many people have already said, at what cost?. Fundamental rights and privilidges that previous generations fought so hard to obtain are being stripped away from us.

The Good
I think a lot on here don't have a mortgage nor worry about rising interest rates. When/If you do, you will agree that you see this all on a very different level.
When you have to always consider that rates are always on the rise, with inflation creeping slowly (hence the rising interest rate) and out of control petrol prices with no sign of slowing or any relief (which clearly there can be) it's difficult to find one nice thing to say about our so called "democratic" John Howard government.
the negatives of his leadership ability far outway the positives. Effective leadership usually tries to balance the tide. He has not done that whatsoever focusing too heavily on the economy and missing out on other important matters such as workplace, health, education, family etc.
good and well to be a debt free nation but what has that ever done for you personally?
Nothing....just as I thought.
My belief is simple....he's a wanker. and so is his right hand man...that little cunning prick. We're doomed if he were to ever take over the top job. Australia will be run like a Telstra.
Peace out!
ok where would u like me to start on the health system
* spending on health care will continue growing rapidly because an ageing population
* shortages in various/majority of medical specialties
* health system is so increasingly reliant on overseas-trained doctors that they now account for a quarter of all our medical practitioners.
* Hospital waiting lists are up to 6 years for elective surgery
* Bed shortages
* Not to mention emergency room exceeding waiting times to be seen by a doctor.
* limited resources
* Hospitals in victoria go on bypass every few weeks, meaning ambulances are turned away from emergency rooms.
* figures reveal that there were 3000 HEWS instances in the last financial year, which were not officially reported. This is almost three times greater than the 1073 occasions of reported ambulance bypass in that same period.
quoted from here
* Lack of nursing home beds, which means elderly people are clogging up the system being in hospital for long periods of time.
* killed bulk billing
* The prime objective is about saving money, ive often seen serious cutting corners.
