Not quite. As you're probably aware, enzymes (and indeed many proteins) are constructed out of separate domains, which have different purposes (act as different active sites, form different structures, etc.).

Most organisms have more than one type of both RNA and DNA polymerase, each of which may have different active sites. Some of these contain exonucleases, which exist in both 3'->5' and 5'->3' variants. 3'->5' exonucleases are responsible for proofreading, and are more commonly found in DNA polymerases.

This may not be essential material for your class, but I've often found that attempting to learn things in greater depth makes the basic material stick much better. In any case, hope I've helped.

just had my bio exam
and now im starting to forget stuff, so..from memory

transcription and dna replication both happen in the nucleus
transcription uses only one dna strand (sense strand)
dna replication uses both as a template.

in transcription, the dna isnt altered, but a new RNA strand is synthesized (RNA, so theres no thymine) (enzyme: rna polymerase)

in replication, the original dna molecule splits (hydrogen bonds are broken), and each strand is used as a template to synthesise the new strand (with the help of..dna polymerase) and in each of the two new dna double helixes, one of the strands is from the original.

to answer the question about helicase...



















....i cant remember what they do :P
did this stuff earlier in the year and the biology course is over so pssh

Well, if you dont know what the helicase does, than maybe you should read the part about unwinding the double helix in the picture of my genetics text book that I posted.

this makes sense.. otherwise we would be all getting genetic disorders at a much higher rate.. i forgot about proof reading

ill have to learn more on that.. if you have any more information plz post
