| Originally posted by Ryan0751 Think you can mix great? Then try mixing old-school: 1. Mix only using vinyl 2. On your mixer, mix ONLY with the channel faders. No crossfader or EQ's AT ALL. 3. For cueing, cue using the one ear on/one ear off method. Do NOT cue more than one channel at a time EVER in the headphones, and do not use split-cue. 4. Try switching cue ears. I've been trying to do this to get my beatmaching even tighter without "checking" my mixes by cueing in the master. This is what it's like to spin on a Bozak or Rane MP-2016 (not the A model, and without the EQ expansion). It's, umm, interesting. And humbling |
thats exactly how i mix
Damn that's how I mix anyway except I do use the EQs to clean it up a little bit, but to me the EQs are really just an extension of the upfaders.

if this is old school? what is new school mixing?
It's all about the beatmatching using the beat from the tip of the needle... No headphones... You got the the mains playing out... match the faint bass beat from the tip of the needle with whats playin out...

just an idea, i read on the djmag website about Superchumbo when he turned up to play a gig and only 1 TT was workin, so he had to play all his set usin 1 TT and a sampler (soundbite i think).
could be a good future challenge for anyone way a sampler, to see if you could play a set usin only 1 TT , a mixer & a sampler?

a recent gig i had, i was using serato, but since i wasn't the one to set it up, something fucked up and only one TT was working. luckily, in serato u can switch the inputs and play off one TT, but it made for quite a nerve-wracking experience....especially with people looking on and wondering how the hell i was mixing with only one turntable.
moral: do a sound check before u start.

Only just seen this thread...
When I were a lad... bla bla bla.
Actually when I first started out in the mid 80's there werent that many mixers that had Cross faders or EQ's for that matter. My first mixer had two phono upfaders, one aux and a Mic and the cueing was master or specific channel. One of my decks didn't have a pitch control either.
Cheers
