The sad thing is - due to the rampant obsession so many white chicks have for 'thugs', this may become the best selling vibrator of all time.

So John, since we seem to share the same attitude about gaming nowadays (graphics first, gameplay second...as seen with the lackluster Xbox 360) I have to ask you this: what are your thoughts on the Nintendo Revolution, which de-emphasizes graphics?

Nintendo is Nintendo ... I stopped playing it after N64. It's a great system b/c they cater to kids. If you don't have a foundation, the future won't like bright ... this applies to everything. If Nintendo stopped and packed up, once we retire from video games ... there won't be a next generation of gamers to replce us.

I stopped playing video games after the PS2 came out ... barely anything intrests me anymore. But, I heard RE 4 is fucking good. I might give it a try.

Im curious to see how the new nintendo does.... i mean after gamecube flopped i was sure that they were out of the console race and were going to stick with handhelds and video games... which would have been cool... zelda on xbox would be great... but the new ways of interacting with the one-hand controller... and the usage of revamped light-gun technology... the new nintendo console could be a lot of fun....

and i was glad to see that nintendo is being realistic about its product... where microsoft and sony are sitting and saying that this console is going to run at infinity mega-megahertz and able to do x amount of computations a second... nintendo is waiting saying that we're not going to be basing our numbers on peak performance... they're saying outright they have an inferior product by the numbers... if thats the case there has to be something to this system that makes it a viable business endeavour... or its just wishful thinking...

I'll be completely honest with you: when playing Resident Evil 4, I felt like a kid again

I rarely play games nowadays...but RE4 really blew me away. Give it a shot sometime. You won't regret it.

How did the Gamecube flop?

And one-hand controller doesn't use light-gun technology. It's all Gyroscope/motion sensoring.

lol

Couple decides to go shop for a vibrator at the local sex shop.
Boyfriend: "See anything you like?"
Girlfriend: "Ooooh! Ooooh! I want the G-Unit one!!"
Boyfriend (sweating and tugging on collar): "Uh.. heh.. um ok"
Girlfriend: "Yay!"
Girlfriend: "But they said we are going to need at least a cube truck to get it home"

That is was Valve was going for.

Otherwise it was a simple FPS. They really wanted to be able to market the game engine, as the new gen, and I believe it is. Usually in games, you can only interact with objects that he developers have actually thought about. Here you can pick up, and use ANYTHING! Very cool.

Gravity Gun + Saw Blade = FUN!

The physics engine in Half-Life 2 is based on the Havoc engine, which Valve didn't develop. Valve was responsible for incorporating it, and premiering the engine with Source, which HL2 is based on. The Source engine though, is an innovation in the sense that it's able to take full advantage of 3 different generations of video cards, and utilize each of their features.

Gameplay-wise, Half-Life 2 didn't innovate in any sort of way, not like Half-Life 1 did...with ingenious pacing, atmosphere, and very clean, smooth gameplay (eg. platform jumping, etc).

There are some games out there left that take you to the next level ... such as Metal Gear - 1,2,3, Castlevania, Final Fanstay, GT, Resident Evil, Megaman and especial the new ver. of Contra.

First problem that ruined the video game industry was high powered consoles, too much nice graphics and lack of gameplay. Now, moronic unskillful games like GTA and etc ... they would must like keep making selling these type of games, due to this new generation of gamers.

I second that! Essentially, this almost perfectly sums up the way I've felt about video games since about the 2nd or 3rd year after the original PlayStation came out. I pointed out to a lot of people, "This is more like watching a movie than playing a game". It's no fun. Sure there were a couple of good games, but back during the NES and Super NES days, there were TONS of good games, all so unbelievably f-in' entertaining that I'd still play them after finishing them 40 times.

There used to be a concept called "replay value" - i.e. how tempted would you be to play it again after you've already gotten to the end - and most new games not only have no replay value, they have no gameplay value at all! I think I've turned my PS2 on maybe a grand total of 20 times... what a waste of money.

The new generation of gamers are the same people who cream themselves over the next useless iPod accessory - as long as it looks cool, it's money well-spent.

FUN AS HELL!

Although I hav enot play this new game, I will stand up for ultra violent games.

How many times have you heard about some kid doing something in real life that they did in a game.....this happens way to often....although I enjoy games like GTA and there are times that all I want to do is get as many weapons as possible and see how long I can survive before the cops get me.....I think the real problem is parents allowing their kids to play these games.....these games should be sold to people under 18....heck even 21.....and parents should be educated on what game they are buying before they go ahead and buy it for their kid.

Posted by cyper on Dec-03-2005 02:21:

When a kid grabs his dads shotgun then goes onto a busy street and fires off a few rounds at cars all because he did the same thing when playing GTA (or any other videogame).

Im not sure if videogames are entirely to blame. I think it comes down to the responsibility of the parents/guardians to watch over their childern & teach them whats right & wrong. Kids should be taught that what they watch on tv or play in a videogame is just fantasy and should never be attempted in real life.

The parents just dont want to blame themselves for their parenting failure.
But I do agree with the idea that "M rated" games should only be sold to those 18+(or was it 19?). Just like R rated movies.

End.

That's why I've mainly stuck with Nintendo. They get labelled as a company for kids, but there's actually a lot of very entertaining games on their systems. Sorta like Disney and Pixar make movies for everybody, the same is with Nintendo. Look at Metroid Prime (which is one of the best games ever created, imo), or Eternal Darkness. These types of games are NOT for kids, but are still extremely good and entertaining.

The Playstation has had it's share of good games too though; don't get me wrong. But Sony's philosophy has been, and will be, "quantity over quality". For every Metal Gear Solid 3 or ICO, there's 20 "me-too" games.

And now you have Microsoft, who really are catering to the MTV generation. People who think video gaming started just recently, and it's the "cool" thing to do. I've yet to see one game that breaks new ground on the Xbox (and no, "dual-wielding" in Halo 2 doesn't break new ground. It's just a cool feature that's been in numerous other FPS games).

The reason why I'm looking forward to Nintendo's "Revolution" is because they're truly taking gaming to the next level. Finally some life in this stale industry. Just thinking about playing games that I'd never touch normally intrigues me, because of this new controller.

The XBox, both old and new, feature a parental locking system so that their child cannot play an M-Rated game on their console. The new Nintendo console will feature that as well.

How many parents do you think know about this?

I'm not sure who came first but the level of open ended play IMO is better in Elder Scrolls3: Morrowind. Also gets better with the 2 add ons.

Smart move, I'd probably have gotten a lot more value out of a GC than the PS2. I think I'll pass on the Xbox 360 - I don't need yet another Windows box in my house that crashes all the time.

There is one game I have been playing since I was 12 years old.

Civilization I-- and I have played every version ever since.
Civilization II
Civilization II:Gold
Civilization : Call to Power
Civilization III

and finally Civilization IV has been just recently released. Pure strategy, its still one of those games that one has to actually think.

18+ is waaay too much for M rated games. I agree little kids shouldn't be playing GTA, but by the time I got to high school I think I figured out real life != video game.

Posted by DJ_Elyot on Dec-03-2005 05:45:

This is why I only bought the Gamecube. It's got the most interesting games, and sadly, a ton of them get overlooked because they're so innovative that few people want to try them. Stuff like Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Eternal Darkness (AMAZING GAME! A TRUE GEM! THEY ACTUALLY PATENTED THE SANITY METER), RE4, etc. F-Zero GX is my favourite racing game of all time too... it doesn't try to be real at all, and that's what makes it good. Prince of Persia did some very innovative things for platform adventures (namely the ability to reverse time) and there are tons and tons of other really innovative titles that don't get the credit they deserve. Stuff like Pikmin, Viewtiful Joe, even DK Jungle Beat (which is NOT DONKEY KONGA!! Donkey Konga is DDR with Bongo Drums... DK Jungle Beat is an action/sidescroller platform game that uses bongos instead of a controller, which is a lot of fun.) Another very very excellent game that got totally overlooked is Beyond Good and Evil. I played through about 2/3 of that game when I borrowed it from my brother's girlfriend... I was really sad when my brother broke up with her and he had to give it back .

I'm so glad I went Gamecube. I eventually bought a PS2 once they got cheaper, mainly because I wanted to buy a DVD player anyway, and other than that, the only game I really play on it is DDR (yea, so what, I play DDR...) But yea... gamecube was the way to go.

I have got a few friends who are addicted to Civ 4, but I'm not so much into those type of games... maybe I'll have some time this winter to try it. I really want to try the Shadow of a Colossus game though... it looks very different. I read a good review about the King Kong game as well (finally, a movie game that was done very very well) but apparently it can be finished in about 10-12 hours, so I might just rent it and blow through it in a weekend.

And GTA is fun for an afternoon, but really not that interesting of a game to me. It has so little focus... so much to do but not much motivation to do it. Not the kinda game I'm that interested in. Maybe if the AI was really realistic and there were a few more layers.

Anybody have some good suggestions on games to blow my christmas money on? I've got Prince of Persia 3 on that list for sure...

^When I have the moola, going to get my branches on Raw vs Smackdown 2 and SSX 4. Too bad SSX went from house to rock soundtrack, which IMO was a key point to the series.

Civilization > all other games. (Avoid activision junk though)

Mario Party and Super Smash Bros = best party game ever. Esp. 99 lives Smash Bros.

Ezekiel brought up many good points in his post, but I think the real emphasis here is that we're all old enough to know the difference between right and wrong. But many kids don't, and this is the targeted demographic.

It's really sad that 50 cent takes pride in promoting himself as a thug. Yes, it's all PR but it's kind of difficult for teenagers of really impoverished ghettos to process reality and fiction. In fact, I come from an middle to upper class anglophone suburb in montreal where so much violence has grown, possibly out of boredom. I pretty much come from the breakfast club days of petty bullying. When my younger sister of five years went to school she would recount stories of people being stabbed in the courtyard! stabbed! because someone gave them a dirty look, or something petty.

I also am familiar with these areas in the US. Some high schools don't even have heating or functional classrooms, let alone afford current curriculum.

I think it would be great if these rappers could at least attempt at not promoting rape, assault, murder, and "oh it's so cool that my claim to fame relies on the fact that I was a crack dealer, so you become a crack dealer and you'll make it too!"

sorry, I'm a a little sensitive about this subject.

Unfortunately prohibitive age laws don't work. Kids will still play these games and watch these awful movies and live vicariously through 50 cent and DMX...

The real question is....are some of these M rated games under rated. Have a rating system similar to movies. Games like GTA and 50 cents game should probably have a higher rating then M. I would suggest a system such as:

F - family...safe for all ages
T - Teen - 14 + (games with unrealistic violence)
M - Mature - 16 + (games with violence, language)
A - Adult - 18+ (games with realistic violence, nudity, sexual themes)

Best Console = N64
Best Games = Mario Golf - Mario Tennis - Mario Kart 64 - Mario Party 1/2/3

NO VIOLENCE - TONS OF FUN!!

Agreed, although I think the parents here need to take responsibility as well because they're the ones who are supposed to be enforcing those ratings. Don't get me wrong, 50 cent is a slimebucket and I agree with John that this is a new low for the industry - but most teens, especially the ones who are most likely to be affected by this schlock, can't even afford video games. I came from a middle-class family and had to save up every penny I had for 6 weeks to buy a video game, and that was when games cost $30.

All the parents really have to is say "sorry, you aren't playing that". Let the kids call child welfare. I'm sure they'll be really sympathetic over the fact that their parents took away their fiddy cent video game.
