I love Christmas music WOOT!

- I play it at home (piano) during my holidays and we sing-a-long or listen with the 2 dogs, 3 cats, 3 birds making their own sounds sometimes - haha Goodtimes!

one of my favourites would be.....

The Coventry Carol

The music of "The Coventry Carol" dates from the 16th century possibly even the 15th Century making it one of the oldest extant ones in the English language. It was taken from a pageant put on by shear-men and tailors of Coventry, England, on the steps of the: citys cathedral between 1534 and 1584; this in turn was based on a much older morality play that tradesmen mounted for the entertainment of their monarchs and town officials. The songs minor tune and gently lulling words were sung by the women of Bethlehem shortly before King Herods men came to slaughter their infant songs in an attempt to kill the newborn "King of the Jews." In many churches, those children who were killed by Herod are commemorated on December 28, the feast day of the Holy Innocents.

Coventry Carol
(melody in A minor)

1. Lullay, lulla, Thou little tiny Child,
By, by, lully, lullay.
Lullay, lulla, Thou little tiny Child.
By, by, lully, lullay.

2. O sisters, too, how may we do,
For to preserve this day;
This poor Youngling for whom we sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

3. Herod the King, in his raging,
Charged he hath this day;
His men of might, in his own sight,
All children young, to slay.

4. Then woe is me, poor Child, for Thee,
And ever mourn and say;
For Thy parting, nor say nor sing,
By, by, lully, lullay.

Wohl mir, dass ich Jesum habe!

Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Cantata 147) - J.S. Bach 1716
(melody in C major)

Jesu, joy of man's desiring,
Holy wisdom, love most bright;
Drawn by Thee, our souls aspiring,
Soar to uncreated light.
Word of God, our flesh that fashioned,
With the fire of life impassioned,
Striving still to truth unknown,
Soaring, dying round Thy throne.

my grandfather taught me this one - a very intense memory for me

written in 9/8 time (mostly triplets) quite difficult to play when I was 7 years old.

We sat there for 2 hours until I got it right - thank god for my ear!

I feel for you Drew, I really do

Oh the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we've no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signs of Pauseping,
And I've bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally kiss goodnight,
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight,
All the way home I'll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we're still good-bying,
But as long as you love me so,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Baby it's cold outside

I really can't stay - Baby it's cold outside
I've got to go away - Baby it's cold outside
This evening has been - Been hoping that you'd drop in
So very nice - I'll hold your hands, they're just like ice
My mother will start to worry - Beautiful, what's your hurry
My father will be pacing the floor - Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I'd better scurry - Beautiful, please don't hurry
well Maybe just a half a drink more - Put some music on while I pour

The neighbors might think - Baby, it's bad out there
Say, what's in this drink - No cabs to be had out there
I wish I knew how - Your eyes are like starlight now
To break this spell - I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell
I ought to say no, no, no, sir - Mind if I move a little closer
At least I'm gonna say that I tried - What's the sense in hurting my pride
I really can't stay - Baby don't hold out
Ahh, but it's cold outside

C'mon baby

I simply must go - Baby, it's cold outside
The answer is no - Ooh baby, it's cold outside
This welcome has been - I'm lucky that you dropped in
So nice and warm -- Look out the window at that storm
My sister will be suspicious - Man, your lips look so delicious
My brother will be there at the door - Waves upon a tropical shore
My maiden aunt's mind is vicious - Gosh your lips look delicious
Well maybe just a half a drink more - Never such a blizzard before

I've got to go home - Oh, baby, you'll freeze out there
Say, lend me your comb - It's up to your knees out there
You've really been grand - Your eyes are like starlight now
But don't you see - How can you do this thing to me
There's bound to be talk tomorrow - Making my life long sorrow
At least there will be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died
I really can't stay - Get over that old out
Ahh, but it's cold outside

Baby it's cold outside

Brr its cold.
It's cold out there
Cant you stay awhile longer baby
Well..I really shouldn't...alright

Make it worth your while baby
Ahh, do that again.

Walking 'Round in Women's Underwear
sung to the tune "Walkin' in the Winter Wonderland"

Lacy things, the wife is missing
Didn't ask for her permission
I'm wearing her clothes, her silk pantyhose
Walking 'round in women's underwear

In the stores, there's a teddy,
With little straps, like spaghetti
It hold me so tight,
Like handcuffs at night,
Walking 'round in women's underwear

In the office, there's a guy named Melvin
He pretends that I am Murphy Brown,
He'll say are you ready, we'll say -Whoa, man!
At least until the wife is out of town.

Later on, if you wanna
We can dress, like Madonna
Put on some eyeshade, and join the parade,
Walkin 'round in women's underwear

Lacy things, missing
Didn't ask permission
I'm wearing her clothes, silk pantyhose
I'm walking around in women's underwear

christmas isnt the same with out it

Pogues - Fairytale of New York
Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas
...

both great tracks.

wow, the Pogues were f'd up. memories of drunken SNL appearances...the lead singer's complete incoherence made Bob Dylan sound eloquent in comparison, lol.

Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" is probably my favourite "traditional" Christmas song.

anything by the classic, smooth singers...Tony Bennett also comes to mind.

Cerys from Catatonia has a very, very unique voice.

A few other versions worth noting:

Dean Martin - Baby, It's Cold Outside

Ray Charles - Baby, It`s Cold Outside (w/ Betty Carter)

Silent Night is one of the most beautiful songs for Xmas. I also like George Michael's "Last Christmas". There's this really vulgar one that is so dirty yet when I hear the song I can't help but laugh. Here are the words: http://www.whatfreaks.com/misc/0.shtml

Dancing Dude

You know Dasher and Dancer
And Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)
Had a very shiny nose
(like a light bulb)
And if you ever saw it
(saw it)
You would even say it glows
(like a flash light)
All of the other reindeer
(reindeer)
Used to laugh and call him names
(like Pinochio)
They never let poor Rudolph
(Rudolph)
Play in any reindeer games
(like Monopoly)

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
(Ho Ho Ho)
Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?
Then all the reindeer loved him
(loved him)
And they shouted out with glee
(yippee)
"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)
You'll go down in history!
(like Columbus)
