As a classical musician, this was actually quite dissapointing. The worst thing about it was the arrangements and the orchestration. They are not well thought out at all. The added second melody voices really take away from what the original tracks are all about: simple, minimal but effectively uplifting music. The orchestra performance sounds rather uninspired, some whole sections came in late and even tuning was subpar. It's a German orchestra for God's sake! I know that this wasn't the Berlin Philharmonic, but I expected much higher quality anyway....

The orchestra version for Tenshi is much, much better, and I didn't really like that one much either.

Back to this concert, I didn't understand why they never used timpani and other percussion instruments to simulate the very basic beat pattern and give the compositions the energetic drive that they need so much to be successful.

Not to mention the singing, damn. That woman was singing in a soulful style over NBY! That is the exact opposite style of singing that the original voice intends to convey.

Oh well, I know from personal experience that this type of crossover is not easy to do. The reason why Tisto didn't do this for TiC 1 as planned was that it was turning out as crap...it is THAT hard. Hopefully if PvD plans to do this in the future he'll get a better composer and orchestra for the arrangements.

what i'm curious about is if pvd DID compose the arrangements himself...he is classically trained tho if i remember correctly.

Posted by dj jasonF on Dec-08-2005 13:04:

^^^ i think he did... you can tell from the poor quality.

and maybe pvd wanted the vocals this way? i mean wouldnt he tell them to stfu and sing how he wants?

but i agree, i hope he will do it again, with better composition. most of these original tracks have nothing but 1-2 main melodies and maybe vocals.. it is really hard to make an orchesta version of them.

abx next time maybe.

Posted by kernkraft on Dec-08-2005 14:42:

they say in the interviews that the live gig in front of that audience was actually the third time at all pvd and that orchestra played together (incl. rehearsal!)... they say too that they are planning to do more concerts like this and are willing to get constantly better

in my opinion, the first three tracks are not sounding very good, but after that, it is much better. yeah, the vocalists are different, but i liked it.

Whoever did the arrangements didn't do them well enough. It doesn't matter if he's classically trained or not, the ability to do orchestration and arrangements is a specialized skill that must be developed with a lot of work and practice. I have a hunch that PvD did this with someone else that notated the music, and that other person doesn't really understand trance. I would've kept the harmonic progressions in their original, simple level. All these semi-improv second voices are not really working, they're just changing the intent and vibe of the compositions.

Recomendaciones? No estoy para el festival Casals by the way jaja.

I may do a edit and cut out all the jibber jabber and host on my website

Posted by BeatifulEmotion on Dec-09-2005 16:25:

for me this concert was an great idea
i really like the arrangements in For An Angel and Crush
on Nothing But You that girl singing sadly kills the original vocals
the other parts are quite good but not excellent

Chequea tus PMs.

they should have cut the synth's out, shortened the program and put more time into re-arranging the songs for an orchestra more
but it's a great idea
PVD ftw

It wasn't really good. Some very good tunes and arrangements, also some very interesting moments in between but overall it sounded quite "flat", monotonous, and uninspired to me.

But this may change in the future if both partners work at it...

Posted by Abhay on Dec-12-2005 05:44:

I thought it was good at the start,

but i think later on, it just sounded like the music didn't blend. Like it was just noise...

ALso, i think by speeding up the orchestra, by about 2-3BPM (maybe more), it would've matched up a lot better. maybe it just felt like i the orchestra "skipped" a bit... heh... i dunno where i'm going with this .

Could someone who speaks German, please translate the comments...

thanks.
