How am I advocating for that? I'm not suggesting that he be thrown in jail, or even be kicked out of the party. Just that he gracefully step aside until the investigation is finished, so there doesn't appear to be any conflict of interest.

This happens all the time in private enterprise, especially in the U.S. If a company ends up under investigation by the SEC, then typically the CEO steps aside and the board of directors finds an acting CEO to take his place. If the investigation doesn't turn up anything, the CEO goes back to work. There's really nothing special about it.

The only difference between this happening in private enterprise and in the MoF is that the MoF is a public trust and affects all Canadians, thus it is even more important for them to be taking the initiative so as not to undermine that trust.

if they found cause to investigate, it means something is up? That's ridiculous!

We're talking about the OSC and the RCMP here. Their investigation doesn't mean that Goodale is guilty, but as I said earlier, there is already conclusive proof that someone was engaged in insider trading and it's just a matter of who. That is the only time the OSC starts an investigation - when it's clear that illegal activity has taken place and they want to find out who is responsible.

It could be a *major* scandal in the Liberal party that results in a Conservative win...but it could be mere mudslinging.

Mudslinging? This story has been picked up by CTV! And (I think) it was even picked up by the CBC. It's been all over the print news. The Conservatives have hardly said a word about it - they don't need to, it speaks for itself!

It *is* a major scandal in the Liberal party and believe it or not, recent polls have shown them almost tied with the Conservatives. Whether or not Goodale is responsible, once again, remains to be determined - but someone either in the MoF or above the MoF (such as Martin) IS at fault.

Like I said...conduct a full investigation. It is so unproductive to discuss right now, from our standpoint.

It is not unproductive when there's an election coming up in just over 3 weeks. What if they don't have answers by then?

You see, it doesn't even matter which individuals are responsible here. This behaviour is nothing more than a symptom of the culture of entitlement that is the LPC. As a party, they see tax dollars and other public funds as nothing more than a tool for them to advance their aims and remain in power. This attitude trickles right from the top (Mike Klander, and many would say Paul Martin) down to the lowest bureaucrats and ad-men (David Smith, Scott Reid and John Duffy).

Even the media here is gradually thinning out on support for the Liberal party now - the first time I've seen that happen in 12 years.

Ralph should show that he is taking responsibility by finding out if it actually happened (and if so who did it, how to prevent it in the future).

Editorial: Why didn't Goodale call for probe?

Let's see now. The RCMP is investigating allegations of possible Liberal wrongdoing in the income trust affair. But Prime Minister Paul Martin and Finance Minister Ralph Goodale assure us the Liberals did nothing wrong.

Hmmm. So why aren't we ready to take their word for it? Oh, yeah ... AdScam.

This time, the Mounties are probing the possibility of insider training -- whether anyone in government leaked information enabling some investors to reap big financial gains. The concern is that trading in income trusts and some dividend-paying stocks suddenly shot up on Nov. 23, just hours before Goodale announced he would not be taxing trusts -- good news for these investors.

Goodale has refused opposition demands that he resign while the RCMP investigates, noting the Mounties have said they have no evidence of wrongdoing by him or anyone in his department. Martin is backing Goodale.

Given the absence of any specific allegation against him, we wouldn't expect Goodale to resign. But since he prides himself on his integrity, why didn't he call in the RCMP?

Why did he leave it to NDP finance critic Judy Wasylycia-Leis to make the request that prompted this probe? Goodale said at the time he'd co-operate with any probe by the authorities. But surely, he should have asked for it himself.

There are other concerns here aside from possible criminal activity. Were the Liberals, in their rush to get out this "good news" announcement -- one of many they were making just before their government fell -- just grossly incompetent?

Did they let slip to some investors that Goodale was about to say something big? Even if they didn't specifically say what it was, were those individuals able to figure out that it had to be good news, since the Liberals would not want to upset income trust investors, many of whom are seniors, just before an election? Or was this simply a case, as some market watchers insist, of smart investors figuring out on their own what Goodale was going to do based on media speculation?

Whatever happened, assurances from Martin and Goodale aren't enough. Not after AdScam.

The real solution, as Conservative Leader Stephen Harper has noted, is to vote Goodale, Martin and all the Grits out of office
