Belinda will obviously be re-elected with much bigger majority since the lst time. The Conservative party don't care what happens in Aurora-Newmarket. If they did, they would have had a better candidate to go up against Belinda.

right and the liberals care....

all they care about is power.

and i think lois is the better candidate. The fact that shes not a career politician makes me want to vote for her even more.

I get it... anyone but Belinda.

bahaha...he's my friend's uncle...he's got quite the mouth (and middle finger) on him, doesn't he? lol :P

Harper had the gall to predict a *majority* win shortly before the last election and ended up losing...I'd be quite wary of making *any* predictions this time around too, either for the CPC or the Liberals.

it's wide open.

Here's hoping for a Liberal minority that forces then to work more closely with the NDP. I will be nauseous if Harper is elected PM...

I can guarantee that he's lost a lot of military votes because of his mouth. He's turned quite a few away who really wanted to vote Conservative.

^^^ good!

I hope they vote Liberal or NDP now.

uh huh... and the ever so politically expierenced belinda is going to do what exactly for our area?

I dont think voting for the party is worthless at all, federal mps dont do shit for their riding, so i dont really see a point in voting for them based on that, voting for the party will affect you on everthing, health, tax, education etc etc. By voting for the candadate and not the party "cause they all suck", you're risking having the candadate do nothing for you, while their party's policies will directly affect you and the rest of the country. If you want something done in your area, go talk to the town council. I wont vote for belinda because shes a liberal and i dont like their platform at all, regardless of her own political agenda and backstabbing that shes done... that must be what u mean by "for the people" right? I think belinda has a serious chance of losing.

School doesn't define how smart you are for the job, its 1 piece of the puzzle...lol belindas educated but shes still a bafoon when it comes to policits, its hilarious listening to her talk.

if harper wins, say goodbye to public health care, gay rights, say hello to military spending and missile defence.. kiss the environment good-bye since he's anti-kyoto.. WELCOME TO AMERICA.

my prediction: Nothing Changes.

anyone else notice, that liberals are the only ones not running Attack ADs.. all i ever see is PC commercials attacking the liberals.. That will burn them in the end.. cause honetly i'm quite sick of seeing that crap, and i'm quite sure thousands of other people are as well..

and no matter what government takes office, there will be a scandal of some sort, there always is. Absolute powers corrupts absolutely. Either way Canada is fux0red.

wow was this ever an uneducated post....public heath care isn't going anywhere.... harper is going to hold an open vote on gay marriage which is what martin should have done in the first place, but he wanted to be known as the PM who legalized it so he forced everyone in his party to vote the same. Our military needs a BIG time upgrade, under any leader, this is a general consensus and pretty obvious considering we can't even transport 1/2 our troops anywhere, we need help from the us... and anti kyoto doesn't mean anti environment, do you actually know what haper's plans are for the environment?

Liberals not running attack ads, thats all they did last election, and of course its being done this election lol, thats their style, portray harper as evil and with a "hidden agenda." Its going to burn the LIBERALS in the end because harper is sticking to his campaign plan and its working, they've taken the lead in the polls now... i suggest u pay a little more attention to whats going on before spewing your anti conservatism bs.

Posted by MarkT on Jan-09-2006 22:12:

I didn't want to say it, because people will call me a fear monger...but I honestly believe that the CPC will exhibit a more "radical" Christian consevative image and approach if they are elected...although the consequences of such would be tempered by a minority victory as opposed to a majority win.

go ahead, call me a fear monger

I don't have much of a problem with the CPC fiscal policy...I just don't think we've seen the true colours of their social policies yet...and I strongly dislike what I've seen from Harper in terms of personality and leadership ability. That's enough for me to stick with the corrupt Liberals or switch to the NDP instead of voting CPC.

Posted by Platipus on Jan-09-2006 22:37:

lol

^Just what the heck is "radical" Christian consevative image anyways?

Yet another one of those terms that doesn't have a specific meaning that some people like to use as fear mongering.

Posted by Abercrombie on Jan-09-2006 23:04:

Some believe radical Christianity is the only thing that can save us from radical Islam. Discuss.

/can of worms is now open

Posted by Matt on Jan-09-2006 23:43:

The CPC had a similar mid-campaign boost in polls last election.

It's unfortunate that things have worked out this way... now NDP support will dwindle and the Liberals will get a boost.

However, a the CPC has been leading polls for a few days, and NDP support has been rising as well...

We'll see. I think a lot will be depend on the debates.

LOL

...is that so?

People like you amuse me. Everyone says the same thing..."oh, if we vote conservative, then we'll lose our healthcare...and gays won't be able to marry!!"

...because those are the 2 most important things in our perfect little Canadian society: "free" healthcare and gay marriage! It's what represents Canada! If we vote in those evil conservatives, then we'll throw everything that makes us "Canadian" away and turn into a war-thriving nation like the evil evil Americans!

Posted by dartrance on Jan-09-2006 23:51:

haha

Public health care is in the fucking toilets right now

Wait times are getting longer and longer. What happened to all those promises that things will be taken care of?

ABSOLUTEL SHIT. Things have got worse.

like I said, call me a fear monger, it's ok. It's far easier than convincing me that their is no 'religious Right' flavour to the CPC/Alliance

Abercrombie...interesting

Some might argue that the U.S. military is a suitable saviour, LOL.

The most likely outcome I'm seeing is a CPC minority government, which means that the NDP will hold the balance of power.

I'm sure some of you are asking - what could the Conservatives and the NDP ever possibly work together on? Well, here are a few things:

- They hate the Liberals and have banded together in the past to beat the Liberals
- Electoral & parliamentary reform
- Oversight of appointments (esp. judicial appointments)
- Military spending and reform
- The auto industry (which Harper's budget will greatly benefit, if he can make Layton understand)
- Health care reform (not privatization)

Jack Layton is an intelligent person, albeit a little soft and misguided on certain issues. I think he is capable of rationally evaluating proposals from the CPC and making compromises between his ideal vision of Canada and the reality of what Canada needs right now. I think Harper and Layton both realize that their only chance of political survival is to win and work together.

In addition, it looks like the CPC and the Bloc would be happy to work together on the fiscal imbalance.

What else does a CPC minority, as opposed to a majority government mean?
a) Public health care isn't going anywhere.
b) Gay marriages is very, very unlikely to go anywhere (for those who still care).
c) The separatists will not have their way (it would be political suicide for the CPC).

Personally I'd love to see a majority CPC government, I'm just pointing out the reasons why a minority government could still be good for Canada.

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Jan-10-2006 02:57:

a second minority government is dangerous though.....Canada needs to have a leader and in no way does a minority government show leadership.

I agree it will most likely be a CPC minority government....and that is the best thing that can happen for the liberal party....it will force them to get rid of the old and bring in some new leadership.

I want harper to give me a reason to vote for him.....but I don't feel he is a leader....Layton is a smart man but I feel he will play on whatever side of the fence benefits him. Duceppe may win the Official Opposition....and that would probably benefit the CPC more then the Liberals.

Chretien was a devout catholic. So why didnt anyone attack his "Christianity" and use scare tactics like "hidden agenda"?

Yeah thats what i thought.

Posted by MarkT on Jan-10-2006 09:19:

Chretien was pro-abortion and criticized by the Chruch for his liberal social views, was he not?

http://www.wcr.ab.ca/news/2003/0609...ien060903.shtml (catholic site that came up in google, btw.)

"I am a Catholic and for abortion..."

that would indicate that his religion did not interfere with his go governing of the country, given the Catholic Chruch's rather clear position on abortion. Whether Chretien even truly felt that way is irrelevant...that he publicly voiced a separation between religion and policy was the right thing to do.

http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/07/31/vatican030731

On the Vatican's call to oppose gay marriage legislation:

quote:

Chrtien and Liberal MP Paul Martin, who is considered the front-runner to succeed him, are both Catholics but have indicated they won't heed the Vatican's call. A spokesperson says the prime minister respects the church's opinion, but he believes in separation of church and state.

Speaking in Toronto Wednesday, Martin said he must take a wider perspective as a legislator.

Why can't Harper tell us *his* view on abortion? Why did he, prior to the previous election, have to answer for his health critic's call for 3rd party counselling for women seeking abortion?

Why has Harper publicly promised in the House of Commons that he will put gay marriage to a free vote and that he will personally vote to return to a traditional definition of marriage?

yeah that's what I thought.

Posted by Jayx1 on Jan-10-2006 15:38:

Harper has said that he has specific views on such matters but would let parliament decide their fate. Even though he is prime minister he is but one vote in the house of commons. Since he plans on holding free votes (something the liberals rarely do), the outcome of such votes will be essentially what the people want. And apparently most people want same sex marriage etc which is why even if it were to come to a vote in the house, i doubt it would be struck down. The conservatives realize that to do so would be political suicide.

I respect a man who even in the face of strong public opposition, manages to maintain what he believes in (even if i dont agree with some of them) despite the polls. That he doesnt flip flop in the wind like most politicians would shows a lot of integrity.

Martin held the gay-marriage vote just to garner the gay vote anyway, not because he actually cared about homosexual's rights. The fact that anyone believes otherwise is laughable, oh, and he originally was against the idea was he not? Until public surveys showed that most people would support the idea... what a man of integrity *rolls eyes*. Typical flip-flopping liberals, they'll SAY anything to get elected, then sit on their asses doing nothing until there's an emergency (like trying to turn a minority gov. into a majority). It's struck me as odd that the only time we've seen policies with NOTICEABLE results, they've come from Conservatives (most recently, free-trade, and Mike Harris's 'common sense' revolution). Liberals sure SAY they do a lot, but I NEVER see the RESULTS (excepting the ridiculous Charter, which is another subject entirely, you can't legislate morality, and the right to live free of discrimination is an impossible right to uphold, because it requires that people stop discriminating against eachother, which is based on their morals, which, as I've said, can not be legislated). At least when the Conservatives say they'll do something, we can be confident that it will be done!

In any case, the gay marriage debate should be held to a referendum, a bunch of politicians making a decision like that just doesn't sit right with me, too many ulterior motives to consider with each MPs vote.
