Why Intel? AMD's offerings seem to outperform all the equivalent Intel stuff in nearly everything, and for a bit less money with absolutely no loss in quality or reliability.

Posted by d!abolic on Jan-11-2006 08:57:

Because i saved $700 by taking Dell's deal as opposed to buinding the exact same system (but with XP 3200) myself.

Posted by VERTiG0 on Jan-11-2006 08:58:

Mother of god you actually ordered a Dell computer??!

I'm so, so sorry.

I've been an AMD whore for years...my last 4 systems have been AMD chip based.

I haven't kept up on the tech though...any words on their laptop chips? I'm thinking laptop instead of new desktop, for a couple of reasons...I know Acer is putting AMD chips in their notebooks, but are any others?

Asus K8V SE Deluxe mobo
some old case I had
1GB Samsung PC3200 DDR RAM
120GB Seagate SATA-150 harddrive
some old Pioneer slot-loading DVD drive I had (moved CD burner to other comp, cause iPods don't need CDs).

Wow... I also bought mine back in September 2004... almost this EXACT same system (except with a Radeon 9800). But mine cost me around $600 thanks to a SWEET Future Shop promo with AMD!

God bless my gf's staff discounts

GeForce 6800GS
1GB 400MHz PC3200
160GB Maxtor ATA133
Lite-ON DVD+RW

Everything, including tax, is around $1200 after tax. The monitor is gonna end up costing around that much as well.

Aside from looks, the Silverstone Case would be kinda limiting. What's the cost on the 6800GS? If you were building it with the intent to play games, seems kinda a shame not to do the SLI thing. Just my 2 cents. Although I guess it doesn't really matter since he bought the Dell.

One thing that does piss me of about LCD monitors is the apparent lack of options for high end, high resolution monitors. I did find a 9 megapixel 30 inch LCD, don't even ask the price. Aside from that there's a few out there that will do 2560x1536 or something like that but the price is pretty astronomical. Still haven't gotten rid of my 19" CRTS which I do the whole dual monitor setup with and get an overall 3200x1200 resolution with for what cost me then about 700 bucks. It really irks me that laptops that measure 15" and 17" can have highly dense pixel counts, but no one is offering that for the people that prefer to run at higher resolutions on a desktop model. Ah, enough venting...

Interesting...

Posted by DigitalMP on Jan-12-2006 18:42:

HP merged with Compaq. I'll never buy another HP.

Posted by Swamper on Jan-12-2006 18:56:

HPs are the worst desktops EVER.

Even Tandys were better, lol.

Posted by Abercrombie on Jan-12-2006 20:13:

Hmm... good question...

HP and Dell have both been nearly equally on top for years.

Dell is on top for commercial PCs, but HP is on top in consumer PCs.

The BBB is a consumer protection organization. So this involves primarily consumer product.

Posted by MarkT on Jan-12-2006 20:28:

exactly...# of units sold is a big factor.

To WHOM they sell is also a big factor...you've got to look at target markets, type of client, etc. e.g. if HP targets IT pros and Dell targets total n00bs, you're going to have a very different client (and complaint) profile.

Dell is marketed at n00bs too...so they could potentially have more unreasonable complaints becuase they don't have a clue.

But sure, for all I know Dell's service could suck ass...that graph doesn't prove it though. It's a good example of poor statistical analysis by giving #s without any qualification whatsoever.

Posted by Abercrombie on Jan-12-2006 20:35:

True. BBB can't give stats for anything else but their own.

Each company, HP and Dell, have divisions that cover the different IT markets. They both have consumer divisions and BBB is for consumers, so it makes sense this is for consumer product, no commercial product.

Hey man... I can hook you up on some deals for servers.. I werk for Dell

Speaking of which.. Dell just aquired alienware which my best guess is to enter the AMD market so it may not be too far before you see some Dell's with amd processors

Posted by Durafei on Apr-06-2006 05:09:

Just a few weeks ago bought a Dell system with a 20" monitor. Happy so far. My only disappointment so far was that they preinstalled a bunch of useless software that I spent about an hour uninstalling.

BTW: At work I have HP desktop and two 24" Dell monitors Pretty sweet setup !

Posted by Euphorica on Apr-06-2006 06:47:

my family has bought dell systems for like 6 years now. Nothing but good to us so far.

HP on the other hand...BIGGEST PILES OF HEAVY CRAP!
