It's largely about just being a regular (once every two weeks minimum) and then taking the time to you know, find a way to talk to the staff, resident DJs, etc there...and a bit of luck. It can easily start off by going up to a resident who seems to be heavily associated with the place and showing your appreciation for his set. Come regularly, thank the person regularly, work in a few more words (ie. music discussion). Make it so he recognizes you instead of you recognizing him. Then just keep building the relationship. Don't expect it to happen quickly. It does take time. And when you do get any type of access, don't always expect to have it as you won't always get it (just depends on the night, atmopshere, mood, etc). Then if you are somehow able to make your way into the booth, be sure to meet the other people in there. Find a way to mingle. Lots of times, they are regulars, old school die hards in the places and if they are just up there hanging out on other nights just going up and being accepted by them lessens your chance of just being kicked out by other staff.
In the end, it's just learning to know the right people. With Ten15, it largely started for me because of their old message board. I posted on it, there was a board party upstairs which was full of old school diehard Ten15 peeps (many of which still go there) where I got to meet more people. Since I regularly went to Ten15 (at one time, AT LEAST six times a month. Just about every Friday and Saturday when Spundae & Release ruled the weekends) and so did they, got to know them better...then from time to time, they'd introduce me to someone more involved with the party. The promoter peeps, the DJs, whoever. Then I just made sure to work on that relationship. I didn't build the relationships just so I could get access (honestly, I never knew it would lead to that), but because I honestly appreciated what the club staff, DJs, promoters, etc were doing for the scene. Hell, I wish I had the finances, the connections, etc to throw parties like they do -- although if I did have the money right now, the timing wouldn't be right considering the state the scene is currently in. You meet the right people (ie. I luckily met the founder of Spundae at Anu, while checking out Josh Gabriel, through a friend who I met at Ten15 -- just luck). Show that apprecation, show the excitement you have for the scene, etc and you never know where it will lead you.
Again, it's largely about patience. It was a couple years of clubbing regularly before even meeting the right people. Then after meeting those people, it still took a couple more years to even get regular access. Then it just slowly expands from there.
Right now I don't go out nearly as much as I used to. Living with the girlfriend, my finances have to be kept way much more in check and I just can't spend money because I have it...hell, I was spending money back in the day when I didn't have (thank you credit cards...and forcing me to have to file bankrupctcy). Anyhow, because I don't go out nearly as much anymore I don't get nearly the access I used to. Sure at Spundae events, I do...because I help Spundae out. But at places at Ten15, for the past several times I've been there, it's largely been about who has been spinning or who else is in the booth. This past Saturday, just made sure to go up and say high to a couple peeps who work there and then got into a bunch of conversations throughout the night between peeps and SvD himself. Then there's the fact that I'm completely out of shape right now (working on that, though, have lost over 10lb in the last two weeks!) and I sweat like crazy (more than the average person) even with the slightest hint of warmth, so I'm just too lazy to go back down when I can enjoy the music from up there, lol.
I feel very privileged to get any access I get and see it simply as a privilege. Never have I thought that I deserve to get any access...and never will. Not a good idea to get stuck up like that.

yep, pretty much the same story for me. although i started going out to the clubs on my own cause none of my friends were into trance or even familiar with concept of touring djs and the edm world. it got old really fast asking them to come along every weekend and having them look at me funny. so after missing blank & jones one weekend, then marco v the next--just cause they wanted to go to the same bar/lounge/hip-hop club as last weekend, i just started going out on my own and meeting new people there. i spent a lot of time in smoke areas talking to random people from all over the world. didn't ever see the same face twice but i heard about some interesting stuff so i kept doing it. my 4th or 5th venture out i bumped into some ten15 folks at paradise lounge, actually they approached me which was cool of them cause i didn't know anyone in the place. they are the hardcore crew, i remember the first couple of times i ran into them were on sunday parties! then a few weeks later i bump into dave at the mezzanine, recognized him from his avatar as the source of all my party info
, we meet for the first time, and some mutual friends, the ten15 crew are also there introducing me to everyone else at the party. all of a sudden i knew a bunch of people that end up at the same clubs i always go to every weekend. some it took more introductions than others to remember, but with enough frequency, everyone's friends. and that's all it was really about, getting to know the regulars and having a cool group of people to party with. you make connections fast in this scene if you put yourself out there... i've been luuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucky, let me tell you!

Ive been going actively since 1999. But it wasnt till 2001 that i started getting involved with events and playing 1015 for 2 years with cyberjoe. 1015 is like my weekend home where i can go out and feel assured someone i know is there to chat with. Like Dave said, it takes time to get access sometimes there but never take advantage of it. Show respect, smile, meet as many people as you can and dont get caught doing something thats going to ban you from the club. I've seen it happen many times.

SvD seriously is the shit. He's one of my major influences when it comes to DJ'ing, and without a doubt he has inspired me to start producing music with a much more techy sound to it.

Yes, the one I have of Sam Sharp. The other SvDs sets I have are:
GDJB guestmix 1-03-2005
ILTA #40 guestmix 3-21-2005
and I think I have one one or two more sets from him but have to wait till Thursday to get my external hard drive back from my friend.

1015 is really the only main club that I go to in San Francisco, mainly because the DJs I like spin there. I've been to Ruby Skye twice and MEzzanine twice. I might be at 1015 3 or 4 times in January and Feburary. If I live a little closer to the bay area, I probably be out clubbing every weekend.
