everyone wants peace. you won't have peace at the price of killing of others. palestinians can get peace by wiping Israel off the face of he planet (along with the rest of arab cronies). US can get peace when Iraqi oil is flowing in its gas tanks.

we all want something besides peace. truth of the matter - you can't have it. you won't have it. war against Iran will not only involve Iran. China is the biggest consumer of Iranian oil, gas, and other energy resources. China won't let anyone fu(k with it's economy or energy supplies. Even if not at the forefront, you can count on China being impartial. Russia has not only energy but also weapons interests in Iran. Guess what kind of weapons will be used for that war? Keep in mind that Iran did not have any sanctions against it, unlike Iraq. Their weaponry is up to par with Russia's latest weaponry. North Korea has been itching to get even with evil Uncle Sam for ages and probably has few nukes at the ready. Turkey is still pissed off about not being allowed to take over the northern Iraq and has a big axe to grind about not being in EU yet. So, things can turn ugly very quickly. You got major superpowers like Russia and China teaming up against US.

South America stands to benefit greatly from any middle eastern crisis as the supplier of oil to the rest of the world. Considering Venezuela and Chile are close buddies and Chile is not really happy about US's policies and expressions of certain evangelical big mouth, you can count on these oil lifelines to be biased not in the favor of US.

African muslims won't stand around waiting for another set of crussades, so you can expect plenty of heat to come out of this little continent. Indonesians and other asian islamists close to Australia won't miss an opportunity to get even with western satan - so count on Australia being pulled into the conflict. EU - well, we all know EU is plain f*cked - for number of reasons.

Yeah, WW3 looks to be only stone throw away and it won't be pretty.

I suggest investing into Canadian real estate now - that will probably be the only part of continent left unravaged. You know Mexico will be ready to pounce the moment US border patrol has to control the seabord and not the paralels that separate US and Mexico.

Hm, it seems a lot of the people here both on the left and the right are really missing the points. Ok, let's summarize the whole situation point by point...

1) War in Iraq

While it is true that Saddam was certainly not the sort of a person you'd want to run a country that controls vast amounts of resources that are vital to your economy, the war on Iraq can generally be considered a mistake because it

• eased the pressure on Al Quaeda in Afghanistan
  
• caused great damage to US diplomatic agenda
  
• resulted in a new islamic regime
  
• caused oil prices to go way up
  
• alienated the arab world from the west
  
• resulted in higher tension and an influx of terrorists
  

• freed a country ruled and terrorized by lunatics
  
• greatly reduced the ability of Al Quaeda to commit more acts of terror
  
• stabilized the region
  

• A nation who threatens to use nuclear weapons and to destroy other nations should not be allowed to posses them
  
• Iran is the largest sponsor of terrorism in the world
  
• It is systematically polarizing the muslim world to fuel hatred against the west.
  
• With Iraq gone, the balance of power in the region has been lost and if left alone Iraq will eventually become Iran's puppet state.
  

After all this talk about war in the Middle East, does anyone get my point that it might be good to keep high school kids out of the military? Less troops = less possibility of war. If the draft comes, buy yourself a few fur jackets, a backpack and learn how to hunt. It's going to be a very loooong 5-8 years in Canada.

*wonders if that that's why Bush is so hot on buidling an electrified fence across both borders (to keep draft dodgers from escaping North/South

*also wonders if that fence will be manned with gunners like the East Germans did

Do your nation a favor, keep naive high schoolers away from the military. Last thing we need is another 2,000+ dead. Except for the sadistic crowd of course. They'll be glued to the TV counting the body bags

I hate to generalize but you strike me on the same level as islamic radicals, rabbid nazzi followers, christian fundamentalists, red-hot communists, and other nutcases.

Having a smaller army will not result in less wars - it will result in weaker defense system. YOU ARE A BRAINWASHED IDIOT. I'm just as pissed off by lies and war in the Middle East but I am a realist as well. I don't buy your retarded reasoning that convincing youth not to join the army will strenghthen the cause. Many countries have mandatory military service. If people stop volunteering for army - you will have mandatory drafts. US will not stop being a military superpower just because bunch of patchouli-smelling hippies decide that "give peace a chance" is the new national credo. Countries like Russia, Israel, Ukraine, China, and majority of other countries are clear example of what happens when people don't want to voluntarily join the army.

If there's a draft, I do hope you're one of the first enlisted and sent to Marines boot camp. Let's see how long you'll last with your mentality. You'll probably hang your peacenick ass on your boot laces in CO's latrine - as a final protest.

Your point is valid for an ideal fantasy world. In reality, countries need armies to protect themselves and their interests. As for the organization of the army system in US, I think it's a really good one. It is not mandatory, but it offers poor kids a chance to go to college and gives immigrants the right for citizenship. It's pretty much as good as it can get.

I guess I'm lucky I wouldn't be eligible for a draft, as I'm legally blind (completely blind out of my right eye, 6/15 vision in my left eye). Plus, don't you have to pass Basic Training and other stuff in order for them to admit you? Thirdly, as it's illegal (in the US) to be homosexual (isn't it?) in the military, what if you happen to be?

I thought it really isn't as easy as you think it is to get in to military. I have three friends who wanted to join the US Navy & Army in 2002--2004 and none of them made it in. I thought they'd be fine candidates. They were in far better shape than I. At least they had nearly perfect vision and actually worked out routinely in their life (unlike me, who's in front of the PC for 14 hours/day and walks/jogs through parts of my city 8--10 hours a week, but in only one day out of the week). They still didn't pass Basic Training.

I would like to see this or a near-future administration try to garner support for a national draft. There was a rumor flying around last election that if the Bush administration got re-elected, they would implement a draft, no conscious objectors, and people went ape-shit. But I think if they can not implement a draft then it would deter the administration from expanding this "war on terrorism" especially if they are wanting to spread it to Iran while still stationing an adequate amount of troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. This is of course assuming there isn't a sharp spike in military signups.

Anyways if a draft does happen then either A) I will discover my true homosexual tendencies or B) I'm going to go smoke pot in Canada. Hurray

Nope. When (not if) the draft comes, I will be far away from here. I'll be hoping that those smart enough to remember to read Objector's website will also get a clue. And head to greener (or maybe whiter) pastures.

why can't america or the canadians do R&D on Biogas that so that we dont have to depend on the middle east for oil.

I hear alot of Americans complaining about the war being for oil, but you vote with your dollar, and if you keep consuming oil at the same or greater rate, I think you sacrifice any right to complain.

Last i checked the American military was 100% voluntary.

And what kids are being sent? Last i checked a kid reaches adulthood at the age of 18...surprisingly the minimum age to enroll in the armed forces.

So no kida re being sent anywhere...adults are enrolling voluntarily.

It's a simple concept...if you do not want to be a soldier and risk dieing for WHATEVER cause your commander in chief says, well than do not enroll.
