this city is going down the shitter

gun crime, transit, pollution, congestion....

i no longer want to live in toronto.

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-09-2006 17:55:

that next generation subway car is a joke.

A wheelchair spot?

PUHLEEEZE!

Talk about a waste of space. First off, most subway stations dont even have elevators. Second, why do the disabled need to take the subway when wheel trans picks them up and drops them off DOOR TO DOOR anywhere in the city for the same price as a cash fare?

Political correctness needs to wake up to common sense.

And in case anyone tries to bash me about being insensitive. I had a brother who was in a wheelchair most of his life. I know what its like to face real barriers for the disabled in this world. I also know that he was a very reasonable person when it came to the realities of what he cant do.

Councillor Jane Pitfield, who has announced she is running for mayor, argued against the increases.

We have to stand up for the riders, she said. This is taking the easy way out, she continued, adding that money to cover the shortfall could have been found by making cutbacks in selected areas.

PITFIELD FOR MAYOR!

Why cant the crackpot limo lefties in council stop spending tens of thousands of our dollars to give crack pipes to the homeless and start funding our transit instead?

Posted by MarkT on Feb-09-2006 18:19:

this is bigger than Toronto...the TTC needs some serious funding...who cares about little drug centre incentives.

it's time for ALL THREE levels of gov't to recognize that Toronto needs a better transit system NOW.

the feds and the province need to provide the cash...or they need to look to the private sector.

$2.75 for a one-way fare that doesn't even allow for a brief stopover is outrageous, IMHO.

Posted by Jayx1 on Feb-09-2006 18:41:

lets do what most progressive cities have done and let the private sector handle most of it (under strict governmental supervision of course)

most of the greatest transit systems of the world are private or private/public funded.

Posted by thesauce23 on Feb-09-2006 18:42:

Honestly I'm having a hard time figuring otu why theTTC is not being funded. Its not like the Guvernment doesn't have enough money. I mean we pay sooooooooooooooooooo much tax, like everything is taxed 15% unlike the states where they are only between 6%-9% based on the each state's rate. I hear so much about scandals and crap going on with the MP's and how much those guys make. Fuck, honestly, so much of our money goes to BS like that instead of public transportation which is so necessary in Canada because car insurance is so high that half ur damn pay goes towards insurance. UGH!!!! sorry tahst my rambling for the day. I'm sick of getting 30% cut off my paycheck and hearing "TTC does not get enough funding".. where is my gotdamn money going?!?!?!?!

amen to that...regulate the shit out of it and sell long-term leases for cars/stations/route names/etc. to the highest bidder...withthe TTC and gov't retaining overall control.

Posted by Time2Burn on Feb-09-2006 18:55:

I support fare hikes ONLY if it directly means INCREASED service and expansions. I do not support fare hikes if it means they have to pay for an already very well paid workstaff who tends to go on strike to increase wages every 4 years.

Having worked at the TTC for 4 years I've known there to be serious redundancy and inefficiency within the working environment. I feel that if the TTC were in serious danger they would begin to clean house internally - despite the obvious objection from the Amalgamated Transit Union (very strong).

I also see a constant game played when it comes to funding. Although all levels of goverment need to make mass transit a priority I also realize that the TTC must operate at a loss in order to ensure a constant cash flow.

PS: screw all bus drivers who ignore schedules and have a lack of appreciation for the people who pay their wages.

the money is being wasted on scadals, left wing feel good projects and socialism such as expensive inefficient health care service.

We need to reform everything in canadian government in order to be on a competing level with the rest of the world.

I don't know how you guys(canadian public) let this shit slide.. I'm not too keen on Canadian politics/law, but can't you guys do something about it, like remove politicians from office, or anything?

but we keep voting for the same shit (at least in toronto anyways)

Torontonians LIKE wasting money because it makes them feel like they are doing something for the cause when they arent doing jack squat

no not at all. I'm 23, and have rode the bus only 3 times in my life and the train twice... but for so many people, public transportation is so essential to their life. it especially sucks for those who make like under $10 an hour and have to literally work an hour to pay for their ride to and from work everyday. thats retarded. how are people supposed to get wealthy here?

Posted by dEsidEL on Feb-10-2006 04:17:

quote:

"The TTC has argued in the past that with riders covering more than 80 per cent of the cost of operating the TTC, it is by far the least-funded mass transit system in North America and one of the least-funded in the world."

quote:

But the fare hike means TTC users will be paying about 70 per cent of the cost of running the system, once touted as the best in North America. The average across Canada is 62 per cent while for the biggest system in the U.S. NYC Transit it's 61 per cent. Moscoe urged the province to return to the days before 1995 when Queen's Park paid half of the TTC's operating subsidy and three-quarters of the capital costs for things like buying replacement buses.

gawd.. i feel like Shadowolf now ..

i dont think that theyll have a spot just for the wheelchair. itll probably be a fold up seat, like they have now

Posted by mute79 on Feb-10-2006 12:45:

jayx1, whats wrong with a wheelchair spot??

Posted by E*Master on Feb-10-2006 13:50:

The more and more I see TTC prices going up and knowing that the ex-hippie behind the glass makes more money than I ever will just by being a chashier seriously makes me want to get a car more and more....

lol, they told you only half the picture. The $500 would be paid by ALL students at a given institution. You can then pick up a metropass if you want it. However, if you don't want it you will still have to pay the $500. In this manner, the TTC will be making much more money than previously as many of the paid for metropasses will go unclaimed and the $500 --> profit. Thus the TTC would be using students and educational fees to subsidize itself. Does anyone else see a problem with this?

On a side note, Jayx1 is probably correct in saying that the TTC needs a public/private partnership to reinvigorate the transportation system.

Posted by MarkT on Feb-10-2006 19:00:

I'm guessing that the TTC doesn't care about students as much as they care about attracting new riders.

Most students do not have the option to NOT take the TTC...so the rationale becomes 'why discount a customer that you've already secured'?

so true...

unions have way to much power.

i was visiting a friend who lives on bloor and yonge, a brand new apartment building (on park road), i went up the elevator with a middle aged guy in a ttc uniform who had a rolex submariner watch, and went to the same floor as I, and opened up an apartment and went in (im assuming its his, as he opened it with keys). wtf? at the most this guy can drive a bus, and he can affor all this? its retarded.
