NO!!! It's same idea, only 20,000 times better! I made the switch. I put my Final Scratch away and switched to Serato. It's so freakin stable. Final Scratch wasnt. The sound quality is amazing too. It sounds just like real vinyl. You can't do that with Final Scratch.

That's what we're trying to figure out.

It looks like there is nothing on the turntables for him to actually touch.

That would be bad ass to have all track on one lap top, plug it into the mixer and thas it.

I just asked someone and they told me YUP, the new version comes with time encoded CD's.

thanks Kristina!

This looks like the set up, and plug them i just the CDJ's

See.. Serato (the one on the left) works like this. You put all your music on the laptop, hook up the laptop to a special Serato Sound Card that gets hooked up to your mixer. You control the music using special CDs or Vinyls (CD's in my case), but mix it using a mixer. It does not beatmatch for you. It just replaces your CD & Vinal collection.

With Ableton the other hand, you can mix without any hardware, but it's not very convenient. That's why DJs get a sound card and Midi Controller to mix with Ableton Live. The audio gets fed off to from the laptop into the Sound Card and finally into the mixer. The midi controller hooks up directly to the laptop or soundcard and controls Ableton.

Now, what PVD is doing is what we're trying to figure out. Somehow, he hooks both programs together. Normally that can't be done, but somehow we're slowly figuring it out. Think of it like this, One Laptop speaks Chinese, the other Spanish. Completely different languages. You need a translator to understand both languages, right? That translator is what we're trying to find.

You should've been to my last Spundae gig. I was giving free lessons on using Serato. Just ask Robert.

Posted by DjWoody on Feb-11-2006 02:11:

This is how you hook up Serato.

Woody thanks so I take it you can replace the tunrtables with CDJ's or have turntables and the record players correct?

Posted by DjWoody on Feb-11-2006 02:16:

This is my set up at home. The top set up is my Serato Setup. My bottom set up is my Ableton Live Setup.

Yes you can. You can actually use a conbination of both, or even better... Serato lets you use only 1 CD Player or TURNTABLE. You don't even need both anymore.

Posted by Shafer8 on Feb-11-2006 02:18:

So i have a Sony Vio that could work just as well as a Mac correct and fuck do I want that set up you just showed me.

It is probabbly about $2000 for 2 CDJ's and the Serato correct?>

What this i dont get, you mean to tell me you can have a lap top, Serato Scratch Live and one CDJ and make it all happen?

Posted by DjWoody on Feb-11-2006 02:22:

Yes, your Sony Vio should work as long a it's a P3 500Mhz or higher.

That setup... Let me just tell you that I worked my ass off for it. My CDJs are the CDJ800's which are cheaper ($489 each), and work just as well. Serato is $539.

Yes!

Here's a few combinations that work...

Serato + 2 CDJs

Serato + 2 Turntables

Serato + 1 CDJ & 1 Turntable

Serato + 1 CDJ

Serato + 1 Turntable

Here is the thing. Serato lets you access your digital music files (mp3,wav, etc.) So you have all of your collection in your laptop, ready to cue up at any time. Serato then lets you control the playback of the file/track using an external controller i.e. a Turntable or CDJ type unit. You can get time coded CD's or Vinyl that Serato reads and manipulates the playback based on the information it is receiving from the time code. So, you now have complete and total control over your digital music library using the same hardware that DJ's already know how to use.

That's basically Serato..

Ableton is a whole different animal. Ableton is a powerful music production software. It gives you the ability to create an entire song, you can record any instrument or vocal (given you have the proper hardware) and/or use the Operator software instrument package (this is an optional package) to create amazing sounds. So, not only can you do all that, Live will also let you take any song and with some work on our part beatmatch songs and make a complete mix right from Live. This is what Armin does for ASOT broadcasts. It proabbly does a lot more that I don't know about yet too.

The big question here is what is PVD doing with both.

We have some info, but I need to know more.

Posted by liquiddawn on Feb-11-2006 18:43:

um I thin kI have the question that no one seems to be asking yet

WHY DID PVD STOP USING FINAL SCRATCH and why is he now using SERATO instead???
I'm really curious why he made the switch
anywaone know??

Posted by Shafer8 on Feb-11-2006 18:44:

Please tell me as i am looking to buy the best thing out there. So far i am going for Serato and 2 CDJ's with the 2 turntables I already have.

Posted by Shafer8 on Feb-11-2006 19:04:

Please do, what is the differnce between Ableton and Serato and what makes one better than the next.

Thanks as I am on the way to put an add in the paper to sell my bike to get one or the other and so far I think i am sold on Serato.
