btw, the link lights mean you're getting juice from the router or modem (in this case the router), so that's good. however, we know it works on occasion.

i think it's software on your computer that's killing your connection. answer my previous post and we'll figure it out.

DHCP clearly isn't doing its job properly if she has an IP but not a default gateway. and i'm assuming shes getting a proper IP and not a 169.254 address.

go to start - settings - control panel - administrative tools - event viewer

under system look for any warnings for "Tcpip" (under source column). double click the message and paste what it says

she already said she's getting an auto-config ip...read the thread buddy.


meat, the router recognizes you from past sessions. your problem is that you can't stay connected and it drop, for whatever reason.

i'll ask again - which your firewall/security software are you running?

if your computer is set for APIPA, then it will automatically search for an IP address in the 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254 255.255.0.0 range, to bypass dhcp. this resets ur ip when dhcp is not available. you can tell if APIPA is configured if when you type ipconfig, you get AUTOCONFIGURATION IP ADDRESS = ENABLED

if you can't communicate with the router, dhcp server isn't reachable, and APIPA is automatically enabled. disabling that is done by troubleshooting the connectivity, and i think she has 3rd party security software that's knocking her connection out.

no...understand that the problem is not with the router, because the computer you're on is obviously working ok, so the problem is solely with your computer.

additionally, it's not a setting in your computer, becuas eit works sometimes. there is something interfering and knocking your connection off.

it's either a cable, some software on your computer, or a bad port on that router.

1. on the physical router, is there an empty port numbered 1-4? if so, unplug yours, and plug it into there.

2. on your computer, do you have norton? zone alarm? mcafee? mouseover the icons near the clock - one of those should be your security software suite.

go into registry and hardcode the dhcp range. eg... STOP at 192.168.1.200


then set katie's ip to a static 192.168.1.210

would this work?

i remember reading about this.. would have to dig up my notes on where to go in regedit

ps. iunno if this matters, but the computer was put together by me and my friend (mostly my friend) and we built it using old parts and such. and i used to have problems with the connection before at my old place, and i think my network card is always lose...but the fact that its lighting up kinda states that its working and is in the slot

i've been troubleshooting with her and

1. on computer working
ping to router/dg 192.168.0.1 works fine


2. on computer not working
cannot even ping to router 192.168.0.1
-- tried netstat.. no ip activity at all
i'm thinking maybe replacing the nic out?

if she told me she was having previous problems before she moved, and then told me the loopback ping was successful, i would have called that right off the bat.

the nic can be tested in another pc as well, but it's the likely culprit here.

im pleased to say that i will be getting a new card soon. thanks everyone for your help!!! *muah!*
