If Italy (aka Americans who have any Italian roots ) can beat Australia with the mercy rule, I wonder how long the Aussies will last against DR and Venezuela.

A day after almost losing to South Africa, Canada stuns USA, 8-6
They did all this without Eric Gagne or Rich Harden
They also didn't use any of the major league pitchers against USA, as they were all used in the first game.

USA fans will have to pull for Canada beating Mexico, as that along with a US win over South Africa would avoid a 3-way tie to decide who advances.
A loss to SA would truly be shocking - against Canada, 2 of the South African pitchers each threw 3 wild pitches.
If USA wins, they could still be eliminated if Mexico wins by a score of either 1-0, 2-0, or 2-1.
With a US win, Canada would be eliminated if they lose and score fewer than 6 runs and give up more than 3 runs to Mexico. It would be unfortunate if they don't advance after beating USA.

It would be interesting if both USA and Mexico lose, as there would be a 3-way tie for 2nd place, along with South Africa. In that case, USA would advance unless South Africa scores more than 6 runs against them

why am I not surprised USA lost a game in the group stage...

losing to South Africa would be the icing on the cake...

I concur. I have pride for my country but I'll just lump it in with the U.S. basketball team getting smoked too.

As baseball fans, you know that it's "hotness" that counts, not who has the better team. If USA played Canada 162 times, I'm willing to bet USA would come out on top 90% of the time.

Posted by InterMilan31 on Mar-09-2006 20:23:

too bad WBC isnt TA that way the US wouldve had that been washed out

Posted by King Ecnal on Mar-10-2006 00:56:

All I know is... Canada better beat Mexico tonite!

all this tie scenario crap is too much... Canada better woop Mexico and USA is going to bury South Africa tomorrow... at least that's what I'm hoping for...lol...

Mexico scores 4 runs in the 1st inning against Canada, and keeps USA alive
Now USA just has to beat South Africa to advance
South Africa's top 2 pitchers are decent, so I'll be hoping they don't pitch the game of their lives.
I hope Canada can come back to win this, so that they advance.

Mexico 9 - 1 Canada.

Too bad the Netherlands lost two straight.

I'm the biggest loser on TA right now

but they beat Panama with the mercy rule, 10-0!
their 18-year-old starter threw a complete game no-hitter!
He's in the SF Giants organization

The 2nd pool in the next round... with Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic is going to have some great games...

And I hope the USA's only problem is holding Ichiro to going 4-4 or something, and the USA strolling to a 3-0 record in the next round...

PR beats Cuba by mercy rule, 12-2 in 7 innings!

Cuba's winning streak in international play is snapped with their worst loss ever.

In case no one noticed, there was a man at the Cuba/Netherlands match behind home plate holding a sign that said: "Down with Castro". Of course the game was broadcast in Cuba, a place where criticizing the dictator is not wise. Here is an interesting story about the event and Cuban officials attempt to stop him...while in Puerto Rico

Article here

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-11-2006 04:30:

yeah, because of that, signs were no longer allowed

well, Fidel must be fuming from this loss
I'm sure they'll be hungry for revenge in Round 2

Posted by King Ecnal on Mar-11-2006 06:20:

lol... wow.... Cuba lost to PR... that's impressive for boath Pudge and PR....

good show

i was just ready to mention that

Oh well... thanks anyway

Yeah Netherlands

I was at the soldout Cuba-Puerto Rico game and it was an amazing experience.

But Cuba right now is playing some great baseball...beating Venezuela 7-0 in the 7th inning...

Can't wait for tonight's game: PR vs. DR. That will be a great matchup between undefeated teams.

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-12-2006 21:15:

Cuba beats Venezuela, 7-2
That will seriously hurt Venezuela's chances of advancing

USA vs Japan starts with a leadoff homer by Ichiro

can't wait for the Cuba-DR game...

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-12-2006 23:43:

More umpiring controversey
In USA vs. Japan game, Japan had a sac fly run taken away, which would've given Japan the lead.
A-Rod hit in the winning run.

Posted by King Ecnal on Mar-13-2006 03:20:

I knew that was coming.... hard to believe such a PROLIFIC manager such as Buck Martinez got that call.... I'm kidding, I can't stand Buck... I don't like his skills... but I loved the call... because it was wrong of the head chief to do that...lol...

Venezuela and perhaps Dominican going to lose.... couple of surprises to me anyway....

Posted by MeLLyMeL on Mar-13-2006 03:25:

Dancing Dude

FUK YEAH

Go Puerto Ricooooooooooooooo

\o/

Posted by Shamez214 on Mar-13-2006 04:11:

Japan should make it anyway. I really hope that shitty call doesn't keep them from moving on.

Posted by partyhopper on Mar-13-2006 07:27:

Korea beats Mexico, 2-1
Another strong start by Jae Seo, giving him the win
Chan Ho Park with his 3rd save in Korea's 4 games
S.Y. Lee provides the offense yet again.
